On the enlightenment of metaphor to English teaching

In cognitive linguistics, metaphor acts as an important tool in cognition. This paper explores and exposes the value of metaphor in English teaching. Thus, metaphor, as a significant way of thinking, not only provides the new way for English teaching, but also proposes the viewpoint that language teaching is one of the fields for cultivating thinking ability and creativity.

Research on the Ability of Vocabulary Metaphor Cultivation

It is a trend that theories of metaphor are applied in the field of foreign language teactung. It is also necessary for foreign language teaching to enrich itself by adopting of metaphor. Based on metaphors＇ definition and functions, this paper looks into the methods of improving and cultivating on language learners＇ metaphor awareness.

Effectiveness of quality physical education in improving students' manipulative skill competency

Purpose： This study aimed to examine the extent to which the quality physical education teaching （QPET） practices contributed to improving 4th- and 5th-grade students＇ manipulative skill competency. Methods： Participants were 9 elementary physical education （PE） teachers and their 4th- and 5th-grade students （n = 2709 3420）. The students＇ skill competency was assessed with 3 manipulative skills using PE metrics assessment rubrics. The PE teachers＇ levels of QPET were assessed by coding 63 videotaped lessons using the assessing quality teaching rubrics （AQTR）, which consisted of 4 essential dimensions including task design, task presentation, class management, and instructional guidance. Codes were confirmed through inter-rater reliability （82.4%, 84.5%, and 94%）. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, multiple R2 regression models, and independent sample t tests. Results： This study indicated that the 4 essential dimensions of QPET were all significant contributors to students＇ manipulative skill competency. These predictors were significantly higher for boys than for girls in soccer and striking skills, while they were significantly higher for girls than for boys in throwing skill competency. Of the 4 essential dimensions of QPET, task presentation played the most significant role in contributing to all 3 skill competencies for both boys and girls. Further, students who experienced high QPET were significantly more skillfully competent than those students who did not have this experience. Conclusion： It was concluded that the QPET practices played a significantly critical role in contributing to students＇ manipulative skill competency.

The Building of Network Education Platform based on Web 2.0

Comparing with the traditional network education supporting system, this system introduced by the paper adds to many functions based on web 2.0 besides of traditional teaching functions, such as Blog, RSS, etc. These functions accelerate that learner interactive with system. The practice proves that network education supporting system based on web 2.0 can improve learner＇s positivity of active studying and improves the network education＇s quality.

Learners＇ Cognitive Styles and Foreign Language Teaching

Individual learners possess distinctive cognitive styles which have a great effect on foreign language learning. The present paper intends to study the relationship between foreign language learning proficiency and cognitive styles from the perspectives of psychology, psycholinguistics, and second language acquisition. Through the analysis, the author has arrived at a conclusion that learners with different cognitive styles adopt quite different strategies in learning a foreign language. The best-matched methods fitting for different cognitive styles may help learners improve their learning proficiency. Therefore, in order to improve teaching proficiency, foreign language teachers should keep a match between learners＇ cognitive styles and teaching methodologies.

Development of reading and writing abilities by teaching textual patterns

It is increasingly important for students to develop reading and writing abilities. Teachers should focus on the teaching of English textual patterns, which plays an important part in sending writers＇ messages. The patterns used in the text help readers unfold the writer＇s message positively and actively. Students can write texts following textual patterns and using appropriate discourse signaling vocabulary. The importance of teaching the lexical signals and specific vocabulary is emphasized here. And the common core patterns in English texts are also analyzed. Besides, some instructional activities are discussed to develop students＇ reading and writing abilities, including raising awareness of textual patterns, focusing on signaling factors, reformulating and making a frame or a diagram.

The Effect of Background Knowledge on EFL Learners＇ Reading Comprehension

Schema is known to play an important role in reading comprehension. The schema embodying the learners background knowledge of cultural familiar materials facilitates the understanding of the text （Pritchard, 1990）. Also Steffensen, Joag-Dev, and Anderson （1979） and Nelson （1987） proposed that the schemata embodying background knowledge influenced how well the text would be comprehended. However, Hudson （1982） and Carrell （1984） found there was no significant background effect in advanced level learners. From those studies, it seems that background effect is different at different language proficiency levels. Thus, the present study examines the interaction between background knowledge and language proficiency in reading comprehension. The participants were freshmen of National Chiayi University. They were divided into three language proficiency levels based on the General English Proficiency Test. Four reading comprehension tests were constructed to assess their reading comprehension： cultural familiar/unfamiliar text and topic familiar/unfamiliar text. The results of this study showed that participants had better performance on the culture/topic familiar text than the culture/topic unfamiliar text. Thus the findings suggest that the teacher can use teaching activities, such as pre-reading activities or vocabulary teaching to increase the background knowledge when teaching readings to EFL （English as a foreign language） learners

Language Structure and Social Situation： Developing Communicative Strategies for the Nigerian Teacher of English

Defining knowledge and extent of communicative competence in the Nigerian, teacher of English underlies the ability of the teacher to engage adequately in ＂can do＂ statements which describe communicative competence in an ESL （English as a second language） communication situation. Therefore, in the skills of reading, writing, listening, interactive speaking, and in the spoken production of giving a speech or presentation, should fall the teacher＇s （and by extension, his students＇） competencies--linguistic, sociolinguistic, and pragmatic. This paper examines the successful classroom communication of the Nigerian teacher of English which depends on his ability to manipulate the structures of English accurately, as well as to be able to use this knowledge in different social situations especially for the practice of impartation of knowledge. This paper postulates on the teaching of communicative competence, as it brings teachers to terms with the task of preparing students for their new role in the classroom And, the research recommends strategies to enhance the communicative competence of the Nigerian teacher for effective classroom teaching of English beyond the traditional ESL concems.

Experiencing Business English in Community-Based Projects

With more emphasis on the communicative and pragmatic function of Business English learning, the author discusses a case study of a Business English course based on projects conducted by the students in their community This curriculum aims at students experiencing and implementing their knowledge of Business and English in the real business environments, engaging community in the process, and avoiding isolation and separation of business English teaching and learning from communities. The research lays more importance on the students＇ experiencing and participating process by providing them with a series of guidelines as reference and assessment, but meanwhile the students have their freedom of choices and decision-making in many aspects. Integrative skills are practiced including linguistic skills, business-related skills, communicative skills, and technology-related skills. Specifically, the students are required to conduct a mini market research in their community. The topic of the research is negotiated, classified, and grouped in the entire class until each individual student belongs to a group. The project procedure and requirements are given to the students on weekly basis, including field of research, questionnaire, data collection and analysis, report, and the final group presentation. Based on their experience from the research, the students write down their reflections. Based on the observation of the instructor and students＇ feedback, the research found that students＇ expectations and teacher＇s roles varied in a number of aspects. A variety of knowledge and skills have been practiced. Problems have also been found in each step of the project.

Abbe Guinot： Teaching Logic during the 18th Century to Increase Scientific Abilities

In 1778, Abbe Guinot, a priest native of Lorraine and professor in the seminary of Toul, published in Nancy the two volumes of his philosophical lectures, whose subtitle is ＂On Logic.＂ This concerns a general philosophy of knowledge and a critic of philosophical systems. Guinot is interested in science and natural discoveries. He describes the organization of institutional science and appreciates the progress of sciences but he makes a distinction between scientific progress and philosophers＇ sophisms that he criticizes. In order to favor science and avoid philosophical errors, logic is essential in students＇ training. According to Guinot, logic allows us to extend our intellectual abilities, upliR our ideas, help our thought processes, and mature our reflection. However, this logic refers to the great book of nature written in mathematical language. Guinot thinks that scientific experiment is of the highest importance for accuracy of mind. This logic lecture is inspired by Aristotle but above all by Port-Royal Logic. It gives a place to Locke empiricism and it favors development of sciences. Abbe Guinot was a chaplain in the cathedral of Nancy; he emigrated in 1791. He came back in France during the Consulate and he died a few time later.

The Relationship of Learning Strategies and Styles on Language Learning

This study investigates the relationship of learning strategies and styles on language learning and shows how different learning materials according to students＇ adoptions of them. And it especially focuses on analyzing and understanding how M.I. （Multiple Intelligences）, as a strategy, influence on language learning. For research method, this study adopts the observations of the classroom teachings and interviews with the students. As a result, the findings show that first, there are not enough clear explanation on relationship of strategies and styles, but overall, certain factors as verbal-linguistic and interpersonal intelligences help language learners improve their language ability. Second, the use of learning strategies has a positive effect on language learning. Third, the use of learning strategies can be trained and encouraged in language classrooms. Fourth, the appropriate learning materials should be selected according to learners＇ strategies and styles so that learning is more effective and successful. Finally, the implications of these findings are discussed.

The Design of the Online Teaching System based on Multiagent System

By introducing multi-agent technology to the online teaching system and establishing a personalized online teaching system model, the intelligent and personalized problems in the traditional online teaching system are solved; the needs of students for learning are fulfilled; the intelligent and interactive functions of the online teaching system are improved; a new interactive online teaching model is implemented. In this paper, the online system design based on multi-agent system technology is raised, and the modules and functions of the system are defined.

The application of APP （application programs） in college English listening teaching

Chinese college students have some drawbacks in English learning and mastering. Through a dozen years of English learning, some of them have high ability of passing examinations, but the practical application ability is barely satisfactory with relatively poor listening level and oral expression ability.
