Obtaining its dynamic response is a challenging task and usually achieved by numerical methods. The objectives of the study are twofold. Firstly, the discrete singular convolution (DSC) is used for the first time to analyze the impact dynamics. Secondly, the efficiency of various numerical methods for dynamic analysis is explored via an example of a flexible rod hit by a rigid ball. Three numerical methods, including the conventional finite element (FE) method, the DSC algorithm, and the spectral finite element (SFE) method, and one proposed modeling strategy, the improved spectral finite element (ISFE) method, are involved. Numerical results are compared with the known analytical solutions to show their efficiency. It is demonstrated that the proposed ISFE modeling strategy with a proper length of con- ventional FE yields the most accurate contact stress among the four investigated models. It is also found that the DSC algorithm is an alternative method for collision problems.展开更多

A geometric method to locate, measure and fill the gaps precisely is proposed. With the complete contour information, a convolution approach is presented, which utilizes an appropriate linear interpolation to resample the contour to calculate pointwise curvature. This approach distributes discrete points within a convolution window uniformly. It ensures a one-to-one correspondence between every point and its weight, thus the accuracy is guaranteed under this condition. A related parameter selection is also suggested. Experimental results show that the proposed methods are robust and accurate.展开更多

This scheme avoids the problem of choosing the sampling frequency in the spatial domain, or the sampling frequency must be determined when the window data is obtained by means of sampling the Gabor function, the impulse response of the Gabor filter. In this scheme, the discrete Fourier transform of the Gabor function is obtained by discretizing its Fourier transform. The window data can be derived by minimizing the sums of the squares of the complex magnitudes of difference between its discrete Fourier transform and the Gabor function's discrete Fourier transform. Not only the full description of this scheme but also its application to fabric defect detection are given in this paper. Experimental results show that the 1-D convolution windows can be used to significantly reduce computational cost and greatly ensure the quality of the Gabor filters. So this scheme can be used in some real-time processing systems.展开更多

As a result disabled community can make many opportunities to use the ICT and at the same time create a gap, which is commonly referred to as Disability Digital Divide. The purpose of this study was to examine empirically the current status of adoption of ICT and in turn the digital divide resulting from which in the disability community in Sri Lanka and the factors affecting this behavior. A questionnaire and Interviewed based survey (n = 107) was carried out to collect the data from the disabled people who used ICT in the Colombo, Gampaha, and Kaluthara district. An empirical model was developed to show the relationship between the level of adoption of 10 basic, intermediate, and advanced ICT facilities and a number of factors to reflect the WWW, Smart phones, and Computer usage aspects of disabled community. Based on the Innovatiotr---Diffusion Theory, the status of Digital Divide of a disabled community was specified by means of an Index. The results show that this community did not become innovators or early-adopters of ICT by adopting WWW or computer related technologies but was mostly confined to the smart phone related facilities. The results from this study highlight that the income of a disabled person, awareness about the information and technology, interest of new technology usage, social and cultural background of a person, use of English language in day-to-day life give a significant impact on the adoption oflCT by the disabled community.展开更多

Despite the importance of understanding the emotional aspects of occupational commitment, previous research has paid less attention to the role of emotion in occupational commitment. This article attempts to fill this gap by examining the relationship between dispositional trait and occupational commitment. The study examined how two dispositional traits-neuroticism and extroversion-influence occupational commitment through the linking of two discrete emotions including fear and enthusiasm. A survey study with questionnaires was conducted and sample consisted of 144 respondents from the home carers in Taiwan. The predictions were then tested through the SEM approach, with acceptable fit resulted. Results showed that enthusiasm mediated the effect of extroversion on occupational commitment but fear partially mediated the impact of neuroticism on occupational commitment. These findings suggest that workers with distinguish dispositional trait have different occupational commitment, supporting the mediating role of discrete emotion on the relationship between dispositional trait and occupational commitment.展开更多
