However, there is much uncertainty in the assimilation process, which affects the assimilation results. This research developed a one-dimensional soil moisture assimilation scheme based on the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) and Genetic Algorithm (GA). A two-dimensional hydrologic model-Distributed Hydrology-Soil-Vegetation Model (DHSVM) was coupled with a semi-empirical backscattering model (Oh). The Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) data were assimilated with this coupled model and the field observation data were used to validate this scheme in the soil moisture assimilation experiment. In order to improve the assimilation results, a cost function was set up based on the distance between the simulated backscattering coefficient from the coupled model and the observed backscattering coefficient from ASAR. The EnKF and GA were used to re-initialize and re-parameterize the simulation process, respectively. The assimilation results were compared with the free-run simulations from hydrologic model and the field observation data. The results obtained indicate that this assimilation scheme is practical and it can improve the accuracy of soil moisture estimation significantly.展开更多

Meteorological data are one of the most important inputs into any air dispersion model. As a part of atmospheric dispersion modeling studies and developing a methodology to forecast the site-specific dispersion characteristics, the real time monitoring of meteorological parameters assumes significance. This is achieved by erecting met towers instrumented at multilevel and single level at different locations with sensors for measuring various meteorological parameters. Real-world data logging applications involve not only just acquiring and recording signals, but also combination of offline analysis, display, report generation and data sharing. This paper covers development of low cost compact MMDAS (modular meteorological data acquisition system), its performance evaluation, field deployment test and data comparison analysis with fast response and high accuracy internationally acclaimed sonic anemometer. The system is based on embedded modules from Advantech and is designed to acquire analogue and digital signals from a multilevel instrumented met tower. The collected data are transferred from remote base station to central server for storage and further processing using wireless interface. MMDAS has many advantages like cost effectiveness, less complex signal conditioning electronics and easy maintenance. This system has good application during radiation emergency as well as site specific meteorological data collection and model validation studies.展开更多

In this paper, firstly major experimental methods, which are employed to provide various diffusivity data, are briefly described. Secondly, the fun-damentals of various computational methods, including first-principles method, embedded atomic method/molecular dynamic simulation, semi-empirical approaches, and phenomenological DICTRA technique, are demonstrated. Diffusion models re- cently developed for order/disorder transitions and stoichiometric compounds are also briefly depicted. Thirdly, a newly estab- lished diffusivity database for liquid, fcc_A1, Lie, bcc_A2, bcc_B2, and interrnetallic phases in the multicomponent A1 alloys is presented via a few case studies in binary, ternary and quaternary systems. And the integration of various computational techniques and experimental methods is highlighted. The reliability of this diffusivity database is validated by comparing the calculated and measured concentration profiles, diffusion paths, and Kirkendall shifts in various binary, ternary and quaternary diffusion couples. Next, the established diffusivity databases along with thermodynamic and other thermo-physical properties are utilized to simulate the microstructural evolution for Al alloys during solidification, interdiffusion and precipitation. A spe- cial discussion is presented on the phase-field simulation of interdiffusion microstructures in a series of Ni-Al diffusion couples composed of γ, γ', and β phases under the effects of both coherent strain and external compressive force. Future orientations in the establishment of next generation of diffusivity database are finally addressed.展开更多

The ability to obtain a continuous time series of highly precise ET values is necessary for improving our knowledge of fundamental hydrological processes and for addressing various problems regarding the use of water. This objective can be achieved by means of ET data assimilation based on hydrological modeling. In this paper,a comprehensive review of ET data assimilation based on hydrological modeling is provided. The difficulties and bottlenecks of using ET,being a non-state variable,to construct data assimilation relationships are elaborated upon, with a discussion and analysis of the feasibility of assimilating ET into various hydrological models. Based on this,a new easy-to-operate ET assimilation scheme that includes a water circulation physical mechanism is proposed. The scheme was developed with an improved data assimilation system that uses a distributed time-variant gain model(DTVGM),and the ET-soil humidity nonlinear time response relationship of this model. Moreover, the ET mechanism in the DTVGM was improved to perfect the ET data assimilation system. The new scheme may provide the best spatial and temporal characteristics for hydrological states, and may be referenced for accurate estimation of regional evapotranspiration.展开更多
