The present research is focused on the numerical crack coalescence analysis of the micro-cracks and cracks produced during the cutting action of TBM disc cutters. The linear elastic fracture mechanics(LEFM) concepts and the maximum tangential stress criterion are used to investigate the micro crack propagation and its direction underneath the excavating discs. A higher order displacement discontinuity method with quadratic displacement discontinuity elements is used to estimate the stress intensity factors near the crack tips. Rock cutting mechanisms under single and double type discs are simulated by the proposed numerical method. The main purposes of the present modeling are to simulate the chip formation process of indented rocks by single and double discs. The effects of specific disc parameters(except speed) on the thrust force Ft, the rolling force Fr, and the specific energy ES are investigated. It has been shown that the specific energy(energy required to cut through a unit volume of rock) of the double disc is less than that of the single disc. Crack propagation in rocks under disc cutters is numerically modeled and the optimum ratio of disc spacing S to penetration depth Pd(i.e. S/Pd ratio) of about 10 is obtained, which is in good agreement with the theoretical and experimental results cited in the literature. 展开更多

Voids, which have not been liquidated and associated with shallow mining excavations, pose a serious threat of potential formation of sinkholes. This threat is connected with the loss of stability of voids that had been formed as a result of mining operations in the deeper strata. Taking into account the impact of lower coal seams mining on shallow excavations and based on the example of a region that had been intensely exploited, this paper proposes a methodology for analysing the stability of shallow mine voids in the rock mass. Deformations in the excavation region were calculated by using FLAC2D computer pro- gram and assigning the Coulomb-Mohr model to the rock mass. Based on the numerical analysis, this paper evaluated the stability of the void in the event of a roof support fall. The results indicate the like- lihood of void formation. Based on the Budryk-Knotbe theory, the deformations of rock mass and sand- stone strata in the roof of the void, which had been caused by mining exploitation in consecutive years, were calculated. The results of numerical calculations and analyses were compared with the limit defor- mations values of sandstone in tension. It is concluded that the exploitations cause the void to break down. The proposed method can forecast the discontinuous deformations threats in the areas that have undergone shallow undermining exploitation and the areas of underground urban. 展开更多

Various numerical methods are available to model, simulate, analyse and interpret the results;however a major task is to select a reliable and intended tool to perform a realistic assessment of any problem. For a model to be a representative of the realistic mining scenario,a verified tool must be chosen to perform an assessment of mine roof support requirement and address the geotechnical risks associated with longwall mining. The dependable tools provide a safe working environment, increased production, efficient management of resources and reduce environmental impacts of mining.Although various methods, for example, analytical, experimental and empirical are being adopted in mining,in recent days numerical tools are becoming popular due to the advancement in computer hardware and numerical methods.Empirical rules based on past experiences do provide a general guide, however due to the heterogeneous nature of mine geology(i.e.,none of the mine sites are identical),numerical simulations of mine site specific conditions would lend better insights into some underlying issues. The paper highlights the use of a continuum mechanics based tool in coal mining with a mine scale model. The continuum modelling can provide close to accurate stress fields and deformation. The paper describes the use of existing mine data to calibrate and validate the model parameters, which then are used to assess geotechnical issues related with installing a new high capacity longwall mine at the mine site.A variety of parameters, for example, chock convergences, caveability of overlying sandstones, abutment and vertical stresses have been estimated. 展开更多

Contact detection between interacting blocks is of great importance to discontinuity-based numerical methods, such as DDA, DEM, and NMM. A rigorous contact theory is a prerequisite to describing the interactions of multiple blocks. Currently, the penalty method, in which mathematical springs with high stiffness values are employed, is always used to calculate the contact forces. High stiffness values may cause numerical oscillations and limit the time step. Furthermore, their values are difficult to identify. The intention of this study is to present a two-scale contact model for the calculation of forces between colliding blocks. In this new model, a calculation step taken from the moment of contact will be divided into two time stages: the free motion time stage and the contact time stage. Actually, these two time stages correspond to two real physical processes. Based on this, we present a new numerical model that is intended to be more precise and useful in calculating the contact forces without mathematical springs. The propagation of the elastic wave during collision is of a characteristic length, which determines the volume of material involved in the contact force calculation. In conventional contact models, this range is always regarded as the length of one element, which may lead to an inaccurate calculation of contact forces. In fact, the real scale of this range is smaller than the length of a single element, and subdivided elements, which are refined according to the characteristic length and are presented in the new contact model. 展开更多

In this paper,an approach of square coordinate transformation is proposed to approximate the spectral abscissa for continuous-time switched linear systems.By applying elementary transformations iteratively,a series of minimums of least μ1 matrix set measures are obtained, which are utilized to approximate the spectral abscissa of the switched system. The approach is developed into tractable numerical algorithms that provide upper bound estimates of the spectral abscissa.Numerical simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed method. 展开更多
