Numerical Simulation on the Interaction of an Internal Solitary Wave with a Step-Type Topography

Based on a nonhydrostatic numerical ocean model developed by one of the authors, the interaction of an intemal solitary wave with a step-type topography was investigated. Over the step topography, the flow pattern could be classified into three categories: 1) the propagation and spatial structure of the internal solitary wave was little influenced by the bottom topography, 2) the internal solitary wave was significantly distorted by the blocking effect of the topography without the occurrence of wave breaking and 3) the internal solitary wave was broken as it encountered and passed over the bottom topography. A detailed description of the processes leading to wave breaking is given in this paper together with energy budget analysis. The results revealed that the maximum of the energy dissipation rate is no more than 40%, which is consistent with available experimental data. 展开更多

To investigate the effects of various erosion control measures on mountain floods, a case study was conducted in Censhui River South Branch Watershed using scenario analysis and soil conservation service (SCS) methods. A distributed hydrological model was developed, and watershed parameters were determined based on satellite imagery, digital terrain models, digital maps and field investigations. Two types of erosion control measures were investigated: the variation of vegetation covers and the change of cultivation techniques. Seven scenarios were considered for the test watershed. The results show: (1) while the de-vegetation results in the increase of peak discharge, the improve of vegetation covers decreases peak discharge at watershed scale; (2) by both improving vegetation cover and enhancing terrace-cultivation technology, the peak discharge is reduced and the peak flow arrival time is delayed; (3) attention should be attached to both early warning system and measures changing the underlying surface and conveyance systems. 展开更多

Numerical computations are performed for the natural convection in circular enclosures with inner polygonal cylinders.The polygon surface and the outer envelope are at constant but different temperatures,A body-fitted coordinate system is used,The coordinate system is generated via simple algebraic equations.The transformed governing equations are discretized on a control volume basis with power-law finite difference scheme.The SIMPLE-like algorithm is used to deal with the linkage between pressure and velocities.The numerical results are compared with the experimental data available in the literature,and the agreement between the numerical and experimental results are very good. 展开更多
