Although the geomorphic properties (e.g., elevation and morphology) of wetlands form the primary criteria of classification, this system also takes hydrological processes into implicit consideration. It represents an improvement over the hydrogeomorphic perspective as the relative importance of the two components (wetness and landform) of wetlands is clearly differentiated. This geomorphic-centered perspective yields insights into the hydrogeomorphic dynamics of plateau wetlands while indicates their vulnerability to change and degradation indirectly. According to this geomorphic-centered perspective, all plateau wetlands fall into one of the seven types of alpine, piedmont, valley, terrace, floodplain, lacustrine, and riverine in three elevational categories of upland, midland, and lowland. Upland (alpine and piedmont) wetlands with the steepest topography are the most sensitive to change whereas midland (floodplain, terrace and valley) wetlands are less vulnerable to degradation owing to a high water reserve except terrace wetlands. They have a dry surface caused by infrequent hydrological replenishment owing to their higher elevation than the channel. Low lying (lacustrine and riverine) wetlands are the most resilient. The geomorphic-centered perspective developed in this paper provides a framework for improving recognition and management of wetlands on the Plateau. Resilient wetlands can be grazed more intensively without the risk of degradation. Fragile and vulnerable wetlands require careful managementto avoid degradation.展开更多

Historical research method was adopted for the study and data were analyzed using primary sources like; oral interviews and archival materials, while publications like; textbooks, articles in journals, file document, speeches and workshop papers were used as secondary sources. The focuses of the paper are to define culture, analyze the relationship between culture and education, examine the primary school curriculum in Nigeria, trace the transmission processes of the Nigerian culture through primary education, consider few challenges of primary education in the promotion of Nigerian culture and offer suggestions to improve the role of primary education in Nigeria in this regards. The findings revealed that, the western education introduced by the British colonial masters, was patterned after European culture for promotion of their educational philosophies and missionary activities. Subjects like: Latin, English language, Religious studies, simple Arithmetic, artisans and others were included in the earlier curriculum for the benefit of the European economic, social, religious and political ambitions. As Nigerians agitated for independence, unity and fi'eedom, the educational policies began to change to meeting the local needs of Nigerians at all levels of education. The Phelps-Stokes Commission report of 1922 exposed the inadequacies of educational curriculum used in the Nigerian schools, as not meeting the needs of the people. The 1969 Curriculum conference however, brought a complete revolution to the primary school education in the areas of relevance. For instance, subject like: Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo which were major Nigerian languages, Civic Education and Fine Arts were introduced into the primary school curriculum so as to create in-depth awareness for cultural transmission. The roles of such educational bodies like: NERDC and CESAC were fully discussed in the paper. Policies like: Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Universal Basic Education (UBE) introduced in 1976 and 2004 respectively, were efforts of the government at transforming primary education through culture. Challenges like: inadequate funding, personnel problem and implementation problem were indentified. It is therefore recommended that adequate funding be allocated and made available as well as employment of sufficient qualified personnel. There should be strong political will to make policies effective and people's interest should be carried along in policies formulations and implementations.展开更多

The Program approached intercultural competency as a culturally aware ability to cope with unfamiliar situations continuously arising in the current ever-changing society, in which learning has become an "endemic condition", and the new media have created symbolic resources for actively expressing and constructing identities as an in-progress and negotiated project. Intercultural competency is therefore rethought from a holistic perspective as a part of an educational mission that particularly values one's communicative and social experiences as a strategic resource for facilitating learning processes and enhancing professional competency. The presented data show sociality as a clustering factor for intercultural learning and displays a factorial structure, from which a model for intercultural education is inferred, in which bridging social capital, media practice and reflective attitude become crucial for gaining and valuing competency in terms of human capital.展开更多

A commonly shared European culture together with its values has emerged as a product of such sociolinguistic dynamics. Following these encounters, whether at word borrowing level or morpho-syntactical level, European languages have had positive and/or negative effects on each other and have evolved ever since in this way as they have permeated themselves into culture. From the point of view on translation's intermediary role in enabling interaction between cultures throughout the history, the aim of the present study is to problematize the answers to the following questions: What are cultural ramifications that stem from linguistic encounter? What are the contributions of translated language to acculturation and enculturation processes? Can the new information through translation produce a culture translation phenomenon? How the hybrid understanding functions? Translation itself is a language encounter that makes impact on targeted languages as well as on its source. In this study, the dynamics that form this encounter space as a meta textual phenomenon has been problematized.展开更多

Though few has seen The Tempest as significant to Paradise Regained (1671), Milton's brief epic extensively shares in this intertextuality Arguing this, the author will focus on how the poem engages with his reformist masque's interrogation of Prospero's cultural authority, especially as an author figure. Where Paradise Regained does not parallel this critique, it extends it. This, the author will conclude, indicates Milton's strong sense that many of his hopes for the function of literature had been realized rather than disrupted during the Restoration. If his poem does not explicitly comment on Restoration politics, it is because Milton's primary political-cultural argument has been achieved. Milton's emphatically contemporary public voice enacts the argument of his poem, advancing God's renovation of the human race, a renovation that predetermines a nation's politics. Instead of suffering from the cultural alienation that is often assigned to the Restoration, Milton, the poet, was more unsettled by the dangers of his art being subverted by those who, as Satan attempts with Jesus' work in the brief epic, participate and even sponsor, its success展开更多

It studies firstly the early translations and romantic lyrics of Pound, trying to demonstrate that part of the influence on his early poetics is from the Western traditional cultural inheritance and that the emphasis on musicality that Pound inherited from traditional forms of poetry turns out to be one of the major principles that Pound advocates in his early poetics; then it comes to the discussion of the new translation concepts and poetics in "The Seafarer" (1911), which is a great work Pound translated based on an Old English poem; next this paper will focus on the influence of Robert Browning's dramatic monologues and Yeats' Symbolism on Pound's transition from subjectivity to objectivity.展开更多

Different combination of physical geographical elements induced the difference of spatio-temporal pattern of land use change. There are four physical geographical regions in Mongolian Autonomou County of Qian Gorlos of Jilin Province. Based on spatial analysis and statistical analysis, we conclude that the primary pattern of land use and the tendency of land use changes are all different in four physical geographical regions. During 1987 – 1996, the dominant land use change processes were from grassland or forest to arableland, from unused land to paddy and grassland to unused land. Though land use change is mainly affected by social and economic condition in short period, the composite characters of physical geographical elements controls land use dynamic process. The relationship between land use dynamic process and the character of physical geographical units differ in different regions. Possible human impacts on land use change are explored with application of buffer areas of series distance along main roads and radius around main settlements. A few models are built to describe the relationship between land use spatial change rates and distance to road and settlements. According to our result, the relationship with the proximity to roads was a negative liner function, with the change rate decreasing rapidly when moving away from roads. Within a distance of less 7.5km from main traffic lines, land use changes occur red more. The bulk of grassland was apt to be opened up for cultivation around the settlements and the transformation from dryland to paddy occurred within the distance of 1km away from settlements.展开更多

For a better understanding of the cause, this study investigates the dynamic changes of Baiyangdian Lake wetland over the last 40 years. It is shown that since the 1980s, Baiyangdian Lake has suffered from an insufficient water input and shrunk considerably. By using SPSS 11.0, this study urines a detailed Analysis on the signifficance of the effects of the possible driving factors for the degradation. It is identified that the North China Plain has been warrnin~ up significantly in recent years, which causes a significant reduction in the precipitation and inflow to the lake. Although human disturbances such as the irrigation and storage of water in reservoirs do not play a decisive role, they accelerate the degradation and their effects should be minimized.展开更多
