An interpretation of alienation theme in J. D. Salinger＇s The catcher in the rye and Nine stories

J. D. Salinger is an alienated writer, who alienates himself from the dominant society. He is unsocial in character and unconventional in behavior. His reclusion can be regarded as the behavioral presentation of his alienation. Salinger also portrays many alienated characters in his The catcher in the rye and Nine stories. These alienated characters include children, adolescents and adults. They alienate themselves from dominant social culture, groups and even themselves. According to the analysis of these alienated protagonists from autobiographical and historical perspectives, the root of their alienation lies in the conflict between their searching for the ideal love and the absence of such love in the dominant society. So comparing with enjoying substantial life, Salinger＇s works can arouse people＇s interest and give more concern to their spiritual life.

Critical strategies for formulating a thesis statement

Good writing is about making good choice of a thesis statement. A thesis statement is not only our source of writing but also our limit and measure. Based on the structure and function of a thesis statement, three critical thesis statement formulating strategies are suggested. The thesis statement formulating strategies are targeted as the critical points in this paper because thesis statement formulating strategies can provide a learner with possibilities of selecting clear and concise thesis statements for writing purposes. These strategies ensure a learner to write effectively in English.

Review and critique of the literature on Business English as a branch of ESP

Over the last few years, Business English has attracted increasing interest and awareness. At present, the mainstream viewpoint is to see the Business English as a kind of ESP and a comprehensive course which absorbs the methodologies of other courses based on the linguistics. However, there are also some critiques. Some people criticize that to see Business English as ESP can not uncover the characteristics of Business English. After reviewing relevant studies and theories, this paper provides some viewpoints on Business English as a branch of ESP and its critiques. On basis of the analysis, some findings will be offered in the conclusion part. Hopefully, it can offer some insights into Business English study in the future.

This paper attempts to survey a minor character--the governess in Rebecca with the psychoanalytical theory, especially emphasizing her abnormal maternity towards Rebecca and trying to dig out its profound causes and its several abnormal characteristics. At last, the following conclusion is drawn： It is just this abnormal maternity that leads to the governess＇ self-destruction.

Grammar Teaching as Product or as Process？

The teaching of grammar has received increasing attention in recent language teaching and learning literature. The major argument lies in teaching grammar as product or as process. Teaching grammar as product focuses on giving learners a clear and explicit framework about the language; while teaching grammar as a process emphasizes the use of language by the learner. This paper gives a brief introduction of teaching grammar as product and as process and points out that language teachers can choose the more appropriate approach of them in the specific context.

Cultural Presence of the Cretan Biodiversity in the Minoan Period and nowadays： A Discovery School Teaching Approach

The educational project prepared for students of High School 15-17 years old with the subject of Biodiversity in Minoan Period and Nowadays. It was an interdisciplinary approach of ecological and cultural views of biodiversity. Special educational material was prepared with photos and texts of archaeological excavations and field sampling which was used in real and virtual environment, in t~ discovery teaching of Natural Sciences and History subjects. Students, in a scientific research project with constructive teachings, followed the procedures by which scientists gather, analyze, synthesize, process and evaluate information of organisms of Crete since 4000 years. Crete is located between the natural limits of three continents, having the unique privilege to host permanently or in migration, distinctive species of these three continents. After having the research questions, teachers collected the educational material, organized the work groups, implemented the didactic intervention in the classroom, had the field sampling of plants, recognized the synchronous local and scientific names of the plants, constructed the botany book, photographed the collected organisms and all the concentrated material was delivered to the team members.

Influence of English as an international language on cultural teaching

The implications brought about by the present international status of English for English language teaching （ELT） are enormous; however, the aim of this paper is to bring to light the shifting notion of target cultures and elaborate on the possible reasons based on the characteristics of English as an international language （EIL） and its use in a global sense for international communication. Suggestions are then provided with regard to the teaching of ＂language-and-culture＂ for Chinese college students from a realistic perspective of current world uses of English.

Cultural awareness in the English language classroom： Curriculum and assessment

More prominence is given to cultural awareness as a general objective in modem language curriculum. But in the implementation of cultural content and assessment within the curriculum raise issues： How the language teachers integrate the cultural awareness into the language classroom or outside class and how it is assessed effectively？ This paper first reviews the content of cultural awareness and assessment approaches at different stages in the curriculum. And then, some teaching cultural skills are mentioned on the base of making some observations on the cultural element of the curriculum. Finally, the author thinks that the assessment approach： cultural portfolios and projects should be advocated to help students in gaining insights into the target culture.

This paper explores how a round character, which is typically created in long novels, exceptionally and well-roundedly produced in Maupassant＇s short story Moonlight, and thereby demonstrates his art of pens and why he was honored ＂master of short story writing＂.

The topic of taking MOOC in learning Intercultural Communication （IC） is an under-researched area, and there has been little empirical research published which focuses on students＇ perceptions. This study explores learner＇s perceptions of taking the MOOC from SISU in learning IC with both a quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis, which focuses on students＇ viewpoints about their MOCC learning experience, development in Intercultural Communication Competence （ICC） and their problems in Learning MOOC.

Review on Chern＇s article Chinese students＇ word-solving strategies in reading in English

In this essay, the author has endeavored to present a detailed review on Chern＇s article Chinese students＇ word-solving strategies in reading in English from the aspects of research methods, findings and arguments. We generally agree on the results she drew, which were as follows： （1） Chinese EFL learners were similar to learners from other L I language backgrounds in strategies use in reading; （2） Both high proficient learners and low proficient learners made more use of sentence-bound strategies and backward cues; （3） The use of forward cues differentiated the good learners from the poor learners; （4） The use of global cues correlated with subjects＇ proficiency level. However, there are some deficiencies as well. Chern over-emphasized the importance of guessing in reading, forbidding the use of dictionary or skipping. Therefore, she could not show the readers a full picture of how Chinese EFL learners discover meanings of unknown words in reading. Thus the author proposes that a further research should be conducted to see if other strategies will be employed in a real-life reading.

Using Mixed Methods to Investigate the Relationship Between Student Motivation and Academic Achievement From Socio-Cultural Perspective

Language learning is a complex process for many reasons. First, it is closely related to linguistics. Second, language is social as it occurs within certain social contexts. And finally, it is individual. Personal characteristics such as experience, gender and age, attitude and aptitude, motivation, beliefs, self-confidence, and anxiety greatly influence language learning. Among these variables, motivation is considered to be one of the most important factors affecting the success of second or foreign language learning. However, the relationship between motivation and educational achievement is not quite clear. In the current literature, motivation is regarded as socially constructed, therefore as dynamic rather than static. Little research has been conducted on the motivation of Vietnamese students studying English as a compulsory curriculum component rather than as a major from a socio-cultural perspective. Understanding the relationship between student motivation and academic achievement as well as the socio-cultural factors that affect students＇ motivation will be an important contribution to motivation theory. Therefore, the situation requires longitudinal and in-depth research into student motivation, the factors affecting it during the learning process, and the relationship between student motivation and academic achievement. A mixed method approach has been chosen to meet the needs of the study. It is believed that insights in these areas will help address the issue of motivation at the Police University.

Implications of Reportage Texts in EFL Teaching

In this paper, the author discusses implications of original reportage texts in EFL teaching and learning from the perspectives of socio-linguistics and pragmatic competence. The author also discusses a proper approach for teaching medical postgraduate students, which is centered on students and based on research. This approach for teaching and leaning has been proved effective and students have improved in their socio-linguistic and pragmatic competences. This approach should have implications to EFL teachers who teach students of other specialties.

Afracentrism in By the light of my father＇s smile

The novel, By the light of my father＇s smile, is the book which comprehensively embodies Alice Walker＇s womanist thoughts. In the novel, she describes a mixed tribe with both African and Indian ancestry. Through the mundo tribe with African features, she expresses her thoughts of Afracentrism. First of all, Alice Walker holds that African Americans should cherish the traditional African indigenous religion-animism, for it promotes equality and interrelateness among things. Furthermore, through Mundo people＇s cultural activities of making pots and their initiation songs, she intends to express such a womanist idea that survival and wholeness of entire race derives from that of each race, so those indigenous people who have been overrun by the powerful and wealthy western world are supposed to forgive the westerners＇ wrong doings, for only love can guide the entire race to achieve survival and wholeness.
