This experimental study investigated how text difficulty and different working memory capacity(WMC)affected Chinese EFL learners’reading comprehension and their tendency to engage in task-unrelated thoughts,that is,m...This experimental study investigated how text difficulty and different working memory capacity(WMC)affected Chinese EFL learners’reading comprehension and their tendency to engage in task-unrelated thoughts,that is,mind wandering(MW),in the course of reading.Sixty first-year university non-English majors participated in the study.A two-factor mixed experimental design of 2(text difficulty:difficult and simple)×2(WMC:high/large and low/small)was employed.Results revealed that 1)the main and interaction effects of WMC and text difficulty on voluntary MW were significant,whereas those on involuntary MW were not;2)while reading the easy texts,the involuntary MW of high-WMC individuals was less frequent than that of low-WMC ones,whereas while reading the difficult ones,the direct relationship between WMC and involuntary MW was not found;and that 3)high-WMC individuals had a lower overall rate of MW and better reading performance than low-WMC individuals did,but with increasing text difficulty,their rates of overall MW and voluntary MW were getting higher and higher,and the reading performance was getting lower and lower.These results lend support to WM theory and have pedagogical implications for the instruction of L2 reading.展开更多
To improve the accuracy of short text matching,a short text matching method with knowledge and structure enhancement for BERT(KS-BERT)was proposed in this study.This method first introduced external knowledge to the i...To improve the accuracy of short text matching,a short text matching method with knowledge and structure enhancement for BERT(KS-BERT)was proposed in this study.This method first introduced external knowledge to the input text,and then sent the expanded text to both the context encoder BERT and the structure encoder GAT to capture the contextual relationship features and structural features of the input text.Finally,the match was determined based on the fusion result of the two features.Experiment results based on the public datasets BQ_corpus and LCQMC showed that KS-BERT outperforms advanced models such as ERNIE 2.0.This Study showed that knowledge enhancement and structure enhancement are two effective ways to improve BERT in short text matching.In BQ_corpus,ACC was improved by 0.2%and 0.3%,respectively,while in LCQMC,ACC was improved by 0.4%and 0.9%,respectively.展开更多

To improve document clustering, a document similarity measure based on cosine vector and keywords frequency in documents is proposed, but also with an input ontology. The ontology is domain specific and includes a list of keywords organized by degree of importance to the categories of the ontology, and by means of semantic knowledge, the ontology can improve the effects of document similarity measure and feedback of information retrieval systems. Two approaches to evaluating the performance of this similarity measure and the comparison with standard cosine vector similarity measure are also described.展开更多

Establishing this ethic of intercultural communication can be completed either with the outer compulsive force such as international laws, WTO roles, etc that have to be obeyed passively, or through the active and self-conscious behaviors of the communicators with self-discipline so as to control and guide the process of intercultural communication. The latter is more worthy to be advocated in the world today, where a globalization process with multipolarization and pluralization as its characteristics is going on. In such a situation, the developmental tendency of continual intercultural communication requests communicators to assume the intercultural attitude for looking on state of affairs and solving problem. This attitude is conductive to forming ethic of intercultural communication and reflects this ethic in itself as well; it can bring up the rational intercultural communication to promote common development of world cultures. It consists of five basic elements: mutual respect, tolerance, cooperation, intercultural understanding and intercultural learning. Finally the gradient direction histograms of each zone are calculated and the local direction histograms of the approximation component are considered as the features of the character sample image.The proposed method is tested on the recently developed off-line Tibetan handwritten character sample database.The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed feature extraction method.Furthermore compared with the detail components the approximation component contributes more to the recognition accuracy.展开更多

These restrictions are dynamically extracted from the parsing tree of the description text, with the guide of the restriction template extracted from the ontology definition. New semantic annotations are then generated by combining the original concept with the restrictions and represented via refined concept expressions. In addition, a novel semantic similarity measure for refined concept expressions is proposed for semantic web service discovery. Experimental results show that the matchmaker based on this method can improve the average precision of discovery and exhibit low computational complexity. Reducing the semantic bias by utilizing restriction information of annotations can refine the semantics of the web service and improve the discovery effectiveness.展开更多

The objectives of this study were to measure water-retention curves, θ(ψ), and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity functions, K(ψ), of the soils sampled at different slope positions in three directions, namely, in vertical direction, along the slope and along the contour, and to determine the effects of sampling direction and slope position of two soil catenas. At the upper slope positions, the surface soils (0-10 cm) sampled in the vertical direction had a lower soil water content, 0, at a certain soil water potential (-1 500 kPa 〈 ψ 〈 -10 kPa) and had the greatest unsaturated hydraulic conductivity, K, at ψ 〉 -10 kPa. At the lower slope positions, K at ψ〉 -10 kPa was smaller in the vertical direction than in the direction along the slope. The deep soils (100 110 cm) had similar soil hydraulic properties in all the three directions. The anisotropic variations of the hydraulic properties of the surface soils were ascribed to the effects of natural wetting and drying cycles on the structural heterogeneity. These results suggested that the anisotropy of soil hydraulic properties might be significant in influencing soil water movement along the slope and need to be considered in modeling.展开更多
Deformation characteristics of light weight soil with different EPS (expanded polystyrene) sizes were investigated by consolidation tests.The results show that the confined stress-strain relation curve is in S shape,w...Deformation characteristics of light weight soil with different EPS (expanded polystyrene) sizes were investigated by consolidation tests.The results show that the confined stress-strain relation curve is in S shape,which has a good homologous relation with e-p curve and e-lgp curve,and three types of curves reflect obvious structural characteristics of light weight soil.When cement mixed ratio and EPS volume ratio are the same for different specimens,structural strength decreases with the increase of EPS size,but compressibility indexes basically keep unchanged within the structural strength.The settlement of light weight soil can be divided into instantaneous settlement and primary consolidation settlement.It has no obvious rheology property,and 90% of total consolidation deformation can be finished in 1 min.Settlement-time relation of light weight soil can be predicted by the hyperbolic model.S-lgt curve of light weight soil is not in anti-S shape.It is proved that there is no secondary consolidation section,so consolidation coefficient cannot be obtained by time logarithm method.Structural strength and unit price decrease with the increase of EPS size,but the reducing rate of the structural strength is lower than that of the unit price,so the cost of mixed soil can be reduced by increasing the EPS size.The EPS beads with 3-5 mm in diameter are suggested to be used in the construction process,and the prescription of mixed soil can be optimized.展开更多
Semantic segmentation is a crucial step for document understanding.In this paper,an NVIDIA Jetson Nano-based platform is applied for implementing semantic segmentation for teaching artificial intelligence concepts and...Semantic segmentation is a crucial step for document understanding.In this paper,an NVIDIA Jetson Nano-based platform is applied for implementing semantic segmentation for teaching artificial intelligence concepts and programming.To extract semantic structures from document images,we present an end-to-end dilated convolution network architecture.Dilated convolutions have well-known advantages for extracting multi-scale context information without losing spatial resolution.Our model utilizes dilated convolutions with residual network to represent the image features and predicting pixel labels.The convolution part works as feature extractor to obtain multidimensional and hierarchical image features.The consecutive deconvolution is used for producing full resolution segmentation prediction.The probability of each pixel decides its predefined semantic class label.To understand segmentation granularity,we compare performances at three different levels.From fine grained class to coarse class levels,the proposed dilated convolution network architecture is evaluated on three document datasets.The experimental results have shown that both semantic data distribution imbalance and network depth are import factors that influence the document’s semantic segmentation performances.The research is aimed at offering an education resource for teaching artificial intelligence concepts and techniques.展开更多
