This will be attractiv... We outline probable and possible developments with wireless capsule endoscopy. It seems likely that capsule endoscopy will become increasingly effective in diagnostic gastrointestinal endoscopy. This will be attractive to patients especially for cancer or varices detection because capsule endoscopy is painless and is likely to have a higher take up rate compared to conventional colonoscopy and gastroscopy. Double imager capsules with increased frame rates have been used to image the esophagus for Barrett's and esophageal varices. The image quality is not bad but needs to be improved if it is to become a realistic substitute for flexible upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy. An increase in the frame rate, angle of view, depth of field, image numbers, duration of the procedure and improvements in illumination seem likely. Colonic, esophageal and gastric capsules will improve in quality, eroding the supremacy of flexible endoscopy, and become embedded into screening programs. Therapeutic capsules will emerge with brushing, cytology, fluid aspiration, biopsy and drug delivery capabilities. Electrocautery may also become possible. Diagnostic capsules will integrate physiological measurements with imaging and optical biopsy, and immunologic cancer recognition. Remote control movement will improve with the use of magnets and/or electrostimulation and perhaps electromechanical methods. External wireless commands will influence capsule diagnosis and therapy and will increasingly entail the use of real-time imaging. However, it should be noted that speculations about the future of technology in any detail are almost always wrong. 展开更多

As the most abundant source of biomass in nature for sustainable production of fuels and chemicals,efficient depolymerization of cellulose under mild conditions,due to the difficulty in selective cleavage of itsβ-1,4-glycosidic bonds,still remains challenging.Here,we report a novel method for oxidative cleavage of the glycosidic bonds by free radicals.Probed by the cellobiose reaction,it was found that·OH radicals,generated from the decomposition of H2O2 catalyzed by CuSO4 or CuO/SiO2,were efficient for selective conversion of cellobiose to glucose and gluconic acid at a low temperature of 333 K,and their selectivities reached 30.0%and 34.6%,respectively,at 23.4%cellobiose conversion.Other radicals,such as·SO4?,also exhibited high efficacy in the cellobiose reaction.Mechanistic studies suggest that the oxidative cleavage of theβ-1,4-glycosidic bond by the free radicals involve formation of the carbon radical intermediate via abstraction of the H atom dominantly at the C1 position.Following this oxidative mechanism,treatment of microcrystalline cellulose with·OH by impregnation with H2O2 and CuSO4 catalyst at 343 K led to significant enhancement in its hydrolysis efficiency.These results demonstrate the effectiveness of this new method in the oxidative cleavage of glycosidic bonds,and its viability for the efficient depolymerization of cellulose at low temperatures,which can be further improved,for example,by exploring new free radicals and optimizing their reactivity and selectivity. 展开更多

In order to investigate the toxicity of Hg on marine invertebrates, we studied the effects of the divalent mercuricion (Hg2+) (at two final concentrations of 0.0025 and 0.0050mgL-1, prepared with HgC12) on metallothionein (MT) content, DNA integrity (DNA strand breaks) and catalase (CAT) in the gills and hepatopancreas, antioxidant enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), in the hemolymph, gills and hepatopancreas of the portunid crab Chao,bdisjaponica for an experiment period up to 15 d. The results indicated that MT was significantly induced after 3 d, with a positive correlation with Hg2+ dose and time in the hepatopancreas and a negative correlation with Hg2+ dose and time in the gills. While CAT in the hemolymph was not detected, it increased in the hepatopancreas during the entire experiment; SOD and GPx in the three tissues were stimulated after 12h, both attained peak value and then reduced during the experimental period. Meanwhile, DNA strand breaks were all induced significantly after 12 h. These results suggested the detoxification strategies against Hg2+ in three tissues of C. japonica. 展开更多

Objective and Methods: A case of Ondine’s curse after posterior fossa decompression was reported. A 33-year-old woman was admitted complaining 2 years of dizziness and progressive worsening of gait disturbances, and 1 year of repetitively ictal nausea. The diagnosis of Arnold-Chiari malformations was established. Results: The patient underwent suboccipital craniectomy and C1-3 laminectomy. In addition to this decompression measure, a fascial graft was sutured between the edges of the dural incision. Postoperatively, the patient lost automatic control of her respiration doting sleep and became hypercapnic and hypoxemic. Assisted ventilation was initiated. Conclusion: Ondine’s curse is possibly due to insensitivity of central chemoreceptors to carbon dioxide resulting in defective control of minute ventilation. Propofol is not recommended in eases of Ondine’s curse, and assisted ventilation until the restoration of automatic control of respiration can be of value. Oxygen inspiration alone is rather harmful than beneficial. 展开更多

The effects of second phases on the fracture behavior of Mg-10Gd-3Y-0.6Zr alloy were investigated.The results show that the fracture mode can be generally described as ductile transgranular fracture in as-extruded condition and intergranular fracture in peak-aged condition.In as-extruded condition,the ductile transgranular fracture occurs by the formation and transgranular propagation of the microcrack from the broken primary phases.However,as the collaboration effects of precipitates inside grains and on the grain boundaries have the tendency to reduce the cohesive strength of the grain boundary,and make the grain boundaries the favorable path for crack propagation,the intergranular fracture occurs in peak-aged condition. 展开更多

P-xylene(PX) is transformed to terephthalic acid(TA) through oxidation process and TA is refined to produce PTA. The PX oxidation reaction is a complex process involving three-phase reaction of gas, liquid and solid. To monitor the process and to improve the product quality, as well as to visualize the fault type clearly, a fault diagnosis method based on selforganizing map(SOM) and high dimensional feature extraction method, local tangent space alignment(LTSA),is proposed. In this method, LTSA can reduce the dimension and keep the topology information simultaneously,and SOM distinguishes various states on the output map. Monitoring results of PX oxidation reaction process indicate that the LTSA–SOM can well detect and visualize the fault type. 展开更多

AIM:To assess the prognostic value of preoperative 18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography(FDG-PET)/computed tomography(CT) in patients with resectable colorectal cancer.METHODS:One hundred sixty-three patients with resectable colorectal cancer who underwent FDG-PET/CT before surgery were included.Patient data including pathologic stage at presentation,histology,treatment,disease-free survival and the maximum standardized uptake value(SUVmax) of the primary tumor on FDG-PET/CT were retrospectively analyzed.Median follow up duration was 756(range,419-1355).The primary end point was disease-free survival.RESULTS:Twenty-five of 163 patients(15.3%) had recurrences.The median SUVmax values of the recurrence and no-recurrence groups were 8.9(range,5-24) and 8.2(range,0-23,P = 0.998).Receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve analysis showed no significant association between SUVmax and recurrence(area under the curve = 0.5,P = 0.998,95% CI:0.389-0.611).Because a statistically significant value was not found,SUVmax was dichotomized at its median of 8.6.The disease-free survival curve was analyzed using the median SUVmax(8.6) as the cut off.Univariate and multivariate analysis did not provide evidence that disease-free survival rates for the subgroups defined by the median SUVmax were significantly different(P = 0.52,P = 0.25).CONCLUSION:Our study suggests that the high FDG uptake of primary mass in resectable colorectal cancer doesn't have a significant relationship with tumor recurrence and disease-free survival. 展开更多
