In this paper the variability of CN was studied for 5 Slovak and S Polish Carpathian catchments. Empirical curve numbers were applied to the distribution fitting. Next, theoretical characteristics of CN were estimated. For loo-CN the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution was identified as the best fit in most of the catchments. An assessment of the differences between the characteristics estimated from theoretical distributions and the tabulated values of CN was performed. The main objective is the observation of soil properties concerning the main threats to soil: soil contamination, salinisation and sodification, decline in soil organic matter (SOM), soil compaction and erosion. Soil monitoring system in Slovakia is consistently running since 1993. Its importance consists of providing the information on changing spatial and temporal variations of soil parameters as well as the evolution of soil quality in topsoil and subsoil. Soil monitoring network in Slovakia is constructed using ecological principles, taking into account all main soil types and subtypes, SOM, climatic regions, emission regions, polluted and non-polluted regions as well as various land use. The results of soil monitoring of 318 sites on agricultural land in Slovakia have been presented. Soil properties are evaluated according to the main threats to soil relating to European Commission recommendation for European soil monitoring performance as follows: soil contamination, soil salinization and sodification, decline in SOM, soil compaction and erosion. The most significant change has been determined in physical properties of soils. The physical degradation was especially manifested in compacted and the eroded soils. About 50% of agricultural land is potentially affected by soil erosion in Slovakia. In addition, decline in SOM and available nutrients indicate the serious facts on evaluation and extension of soil degradation processes during the last period in Slovakia. Obtained measured data and required outputs are reported to Joint Research Centre (JRC) in lspra (Italy) and European Environmental Agency (EEA) in Copenhagen (Denmark). Finally, soil monitoring system thus becomes a basic tool for protection of soils and sustainable land use as well as for the creation of legislatives not only in Slovakia, but in EU, too.展开更多

Based on XRD diffraction patterns and infrared spectra ofpre-treatment products, the formation of the new profiles corresponding to CSH phases with low degree of ordering as belite precursors after hydrothermal treatment as well as metastables calcium silicates and aluminosilicates in mechanosynthesized products was confirmed. Calcination of hydrothermally treated products led to transformation of CSH phases to wollastonite (CS), belite and gehlenite phase, whereas creation oft^- and I^-C2S or wollastonite in milled reactive mixture took place. Differences in phase composition of products before and after calcination depend upon waste quality and precursor's synthesis conditions. Bottom ash isn't suitable as raw material for synthesizing belite phase because of high CaO content fixed in anhydrite form (44.1%). Coal fly ash with low CaO content in anhydrite form (4.2%) and its mechanochemical or hydrothermal treatment in combination with subsequent heating offer opportunities for the utilization of coal fly ash as raw material for belite production.展开更多

The area was selected on the basis of changes associated with the rapidly growing tourism industry and the rise of an important destination in the center of Low Tatras National Park, Slovakia. To document any changes, we visually interpreted data from aerial and satellite images in three periods(1949, 2007 and 2013) and for predicting future changes we used land use planning documentation. Interpreted data were analyzed using overlay analysis and landscape metrics. Results showed extensive changes in the landscape structure mainly connected with the development of tourism infrastructure. We also identified long-term changes whose causes stem from the transformation of society and forest management in the past. The dynamics and extent of these changes may increase in the future. We propose to stop future development of ski slopes and expansion of related infrastructure, to focus on sustainability and environmentally friendly operation of the existing ski resort and to invest a substantial portion of profits to support projects aimed to preserve surrounding lands and wildlife.展开更多

Firstly, it develops a typology of corporate group development in terms of the pattern of corporate group formation in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It identifies briefly three important types of corporate groups--industrial groups (type I groups), pyramid-like (type II) groups, and financial (type IIl or FIGs) groups. Using original typology for corporate groups, the paper examines development trajectory of some of the biggest FIGs and shows what effects their existence have in the two economies. Finally, some lessons resulting from this corporate group-related type of ownership concentration for other pre-transitive countries are mentioned.展开更多

Since 1 May 2004, the Slovak insurance market has been part of the uniform European Union insurance market, which includes over 5,000 insurance companies. After Slovakia’s admission to the European Union, several legislative changes have been adopted in the area of commercial insurance industry, which also influenced non-life insurance and the insurance of international risks as part of non-life risks. The most recent act in the area of commercial insurance mentioned in the paper is the Act of the National Council SR No. 39/2015 Coll. on Insurance, in which there are legislative changes in life and also non-life insurance. Basic terms are defined and commented on in the first two chapters (Lowry, Rawlings, & Merkin, 2015). The nature of international risks as part of non-life risks is described in the second chapter. International risks are classified in the third chapter; international risks are subdivided in the paper into commercial or trade risks, political and economic risks, and special types of risks.展开更多

One of the priorities of mayors is the usefulness of spatial disproportions of area as well as the structure and development of housing construction. They are natural canters of public and commercial services. The aim of the article is to determine if the geographic location of the region influences the number of new apartments with planning permission and completed apartments with a completion approval by using the methods of mathematical statistics "Analysis of variance". Meaning of the geographical location of the region as a factor, which influences the construction of apartments as well as regional differences in selected Central European countries, is subject of the conclusions of the paper.展开更多

Special attention is given to changes in the behavior of wage distribution in relation to the onset of the global economic recession. The different behavior of the wage distribution of Czech and Slovak employees during the period is the subject of research. The article discusses the differences in the wage level between men and women in the Czech and Slovak Republics. There are the total wage distributions of men and women together, both in the Czech Republic and in the Slovak Republic on one hand, and wage distributions according to the gender separately for men and women on the other hand. Special attention was paid to the development of Gini coefficient of the concentration in both countries according to the gender in the period under review, too.展开更多

The economic models were used to verify whether the suckler cows farming is profitable without subsidies in the current production conditions in Slovakia as well as their optimal location in the agricultural natural conditions of Slovakia from the perspective of economic efficiency. The breeding of cattle, mainly for the beef meat production, has long been unprofitable as it is apparent also from the analysis of several studies. In the model without inclusion of subsidies, it was calculated that the suckler cows farming is unprofitable at the current production parameters and realization prices of calves. The losses per cow and year were ranged from -240ε in the model by using a combination of the maximum threshold values of input parameters to -818ε by using a combination of the minimum threshold values of the input parameters. In the models including of subsidies amount of loss and/or profit per cow and year varied depending on the input parameters mainly on natality, average daily gain, the realization price of calves and the level of subsidies provided to breeder as well. The economic results are ranged from -277ε to 724ε per cow and year. From economical as well as production point of view, the most appropriate agricultural natural regions for suckler cows farming in Slovakia are upland and highland regions.展开更多

The analysis of slaughter parameters over the years 2000-2009 showed a decreasing tendency concerning the fat thickness in WL from 18.30 (2000) to 12.40 mm (2009), which represents the reduction by 5.9 mm; in L from 16.40 mm (2000) to 12.10 mm (2009), which means the reduction by 4.30 mm. There was also observed a positive tendency in the percentage of carcass lean meat in a slaughter body. The overall population average for the years 2000-2009 was as follows: WL 54.36% and L 54.61%. The highest values of meatiness in 2000-2009 were achieved in WL + 1.59% and L + 2.92%. Apart from the daily gains in all parameters, there were also found both highly significant statistical differences and interactions between a period and a breed.展开更多
