In this study, Huizhou-style miniature landscapes, plants of virtual implications, flowers or fruit trees of special connotations are taken for examples to analyze the influence of Xin’an Neo-Confucianism on plant landscapes in Huizhou-style gardens, the demonstration of Huizhou businessmen’s aesthetic tastes, as well as folk cultures of Huizhou, which implies that plant landscapes in Huizhou-style gardens are those incorporating with humanistic spirits, ornamental and practical uses. This study aims to provide references for further researches in the present situation of ancient Huizhou areas, protection of ancient Huizhou-style gardens and construction of new-style Huizhou gardens.展开更多

The study focuses on anti-globalization protest events over a period of seven years following the 1999 Seattle protest, and covers all major protests until the end of 2006. Framing is used to explore how bias is instituted in media texts and whether this pattern is consistent across the corpus. Results of this study reveal that the framing strategies of journalists regarding AGM protests all revolve around two forms of memory-based framing tools: explicit and implicit. Explicit memory-based framing strategies refer to the coverage of previous events whereas implicit strategies involve the use of repeated connotations and metaphors applied consistently over the years, recalling previous insinuations made by a biased media system.展开更多

The use of electronic media in the presidential campaigns of 1960 and 2008 is illustrative of this shift. A content analysis of these two campaigns demonstrates how each applied the newest technologies available at the time to define the candidate's image and export the messages to the electorate. Whether it be Kennedy's use of television or Obama's usage of social media, the role that new media of the day played in both campaigns clearly set the tone for future political campaigns. This examination of the role of media in both elections serves to form a primer for how the successful applications of new media lead to campaign victory. Then and now, the growing influence of new technologies on campaigning makes it necessary to compare and contrast the successful usages and strategies employed. The need for continuing analysis will grow in the coming years.展开更多

Innovation appears as a positive value and as a solution to solve social problems and firm's competitiveness. Therefore it is an important subject of policy intervention and territory development, so organizations are encouraged to adopt innovative practices through incentives and innovation policies. This paper aims to propose a new methodological approach for public policy supporting innovation evaluation in a territorial-based analysis. A new methodology which intended to contribute to strengthen and reinforce the innovation effectiveness in firms and territory development resulting from support of public mechanisms. Some economic and sociological studies had showed that Portuguese firms adopt more easily technological innovations (with short-term effects) than organizational and social innovations. In this sense, we will consider innovation public policies effects at firms and how they take available opportunities for innovation. The aim is to know if the concept of innovation spread by these policies is multidimensional (e.g., social, economic and technological) or restricted. We propose to study the factors (internal and external) that affect innovation processes in firms through case studies methodology. This research strategy will show the processes of innovation from within the organizations and analyze the socio-economic context in which organizations operate.展开更多

The purpose here is not to argue that the press had a direct effect on the way beauty was defined within the cultural landscape of the early 20th century, but to examine the way plastic surgery's frame in the popular press shifted from reconstructing war-maimed soldiers to beautifying ordinary citizens.展开更多

The social background of Malaysia as a multicultural state calls for the adoption of an alternative method to resolve community dispute which would offer solution and simultaneously promote harmonization in the society. Community mediation may be one of such alternative, if not the best method for interethnic relations. The government of Malaysia has introduced community mediation in Malaysia by providing training for community mediators through a pilot program, known as Rukun Tetangga (Peaceful Neighbor). The purpose of this program is to promote unity among the multi-races and multiethnic citizens. This paper will refer to the current practice of community mediation in Malaysia as provided by the National Unity Department in Peninsula Malaysia and the practice of community mediation in Singapore. It is hoped that by comparing the practices in both countries, suggestions and recommendations could be made to improve the practice of community mediation in Malaysia.展开更多
