Large-Scale Dextral Strike-Slip Movement and Associated Tectonic Deformation Along the Red-River Fault Zone

Field investigation has revealed that the large-scale dextral strike-slip movement and the associated tectonic deformation along the Red River fault zone have the following features: geometrically, the Red River fault zone can be divided into three deformation regions, namely, the north, central and south regions. The north region lies on the eastern side of the Northwest Yunnan extensional taphrogenic belt, which is characterized by the 3 sets of rift-depression basins striking NNW, NNE and near N-S since the Pliocene time, and on its western side is the Lanping-Yunlong compressive deformation belt of the Paleogene to Neogene; the deformation in the central region is characterized by dextral strike-slip or shearing. The east Yunnan Miocene compressive deformation belt lies on the eastern side of the fault in the south, and the Tengtiaohe tensile fault depression belt is located on its west. In terms of tectonic geomorphology, the aforementioned deformation is represented by basin-range tectonics in the north, linear faulted valley-basins in the central part and compressive (or tensional) basins in the south. Among them, the great variance in elevation of the planation surfaces on both sides of the Cangshan-Erhai fault suggests prominent normal faulting along the Red River fault since the Pliocene. From the viewpoint of spatial-temporal evolution, the main active portion of the fault was the southern segment in the Paleogene-Miocene-Pliocene, which is represented by “tearing” from south to north. The main active portion of the fault has migrated to the northern segment since the Pliocene, especially in the late Quaternary, which is characterized by extensional slip from north to southeast. The size of the deformation region and the magnitude of deformation show that the eastern plate of the Red River fault has been an active plate of the relative movement of blocks. 展开更多

Based on detailed investigations and prospecting,this paper describes the geometrical characteristics and tectonic activities of Wanquan fault in northwest of Beijing. This fault strikes mainly northeast or northeast to north,dipping southeast,and extends over a length of 15km. It is a major geological and geomorphological margin,controlling the neotectonic movement in this region. On the southeast side of Wanquan fault are the Late Quaternary unconsolidated deposits,forming a basin or deposition; but on the other side is Mesozoic volcano debris,forming lower-mountains and hills. Wanquan fault is a mid- to-high-angle normal fault dipping southeast. This fault was more active in the Quaternary. Since the middle-late part of the alate Pleistocene,the average rate with vertical slip of a single fault is over 0. 03 ~ 0. 3mm /a,but the fault has multiple slipping surfaces,and a total rate with vertical slip will be estimated. 展开更多

The production of novel behavioral sequences that gives rise to animal innovation and creativity is one of the most intriguing aspects of behavioral evolution. Numerous studies have recently documented the abundance and diversity of innova- tive and creative behaviors between and within species, yet the ability to innovate or to act creatively has mainly been described and quantified as a measure of animals' cognitive ability without explicit reference to cognitive mechanisms that may account for these behaviors. Here we discuss the creative process from a computational point of view and suggest such a mechanistic frame- work. In light of recent research on human creativity, animal learning, and animal problem solving, we suggest that animal crea- tivity is best understood as the production of context-appropriate novel behavioral sequences, which may be facilitated by the ability to learn the regularities in the environment and to represent them hierarchically, allowing for generalization. We present a cognitive framework that we recently developed, which employs domain-general mechanisms and has been used in the modeling of a range of sequential behaviors, from animal foraging to language acquisition, and apply it to behavioral innovation. In a series of simulations, we show how innovation and creative behavior can be produced by this learning mechanism, as it constructs a network representing the statistical regularities of the environment. We use the simulations to demonstrate the role of particular cognitive parameters in this process and to highlight the effects of the learning dynamics and individual experience on creativity 展开更多
