Its pathophysiology mimics that of allergic esophagitis, and evolves clinically as a chronic disease with periods of exacerbation. Symptoms and endoscopic findings are usually non-specific and similar to those of other esophageal illnesses. The mainstay of treatment of Ee is with corticosteroids and/or specific diets, which have been shown to cause symptom remission and histological improvement. Aim: The objective of this study was to demonstrate the efficacy of a novel and promising treatment protocol for Ee. Materials and methods: We prospectively evaluated 24 patients with Ee over two years. Patients were treated with a single intramuscular injection of betamethasone sodium phosphate associated with betamethasone dipropionate and a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) (rabeprazole 20 mg PO). After 4 weeks of treatment, patients underwent endoscopy and biopsy. We evaluated patients' clinical response as well as the results of endoscopic and histological examinations. Results: After 4 weeks of treatment, all patients (100%) are reported significant clinical improvement, which was corroborated by the findings on endoscopy and histology. There were no complications or adverse reactions. Conclusions: In this cohort of patients with eosinophilic esophagitis, treatment with a single intramuscular dose of corticosteroids led to complete remission of symptoms and improvement in endoscopic and histological findings.展开更多

Matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), interleukin-6 (IL-6), hyaluronan, and cancer antigen 125 (CA125) in peritoneal effluent were quantified with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Peritoneal solute transport rate was assessed by peritoneal equilibration test (PET) to estimate peritoneal deterioration.RESULTS: The ratio of the effuent level of creatinine (Cr) obtained 4 h after injection (D) to that of plasma was correlated with the effluent levels of MMP-2 (ρ = 0.74, P 〈 0.001), IL-6 (ρ = 0.46, P 〈 0.001), and hyaluronan (ρ = 0.27, P 〈 0.001), but not CA125 (ρ = 0.13, P = 0.051). The area under receiver operating characteristic curve for the effluent levels of MMP-2, IL-6, and hyaluronan against high PET category were 0.90, 0.78, 0.62, and 0.51, respectively. No patient developed new-onset encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis for at least 1.5 years after peritoneal effuent sampling.CONCLUSION: The effuent MMP-2 level most closely reflected peritoneal solute transport rate. MMP-2 can be a reliable indicator of peritoneal deterioration with functional decline.展开更多

AHNN focuses on dealing with datasets in high-dimension. AHNNs consist of two parts: groups of subnets based on well trained Autoassociative Neural Networks(AANNs) and a main net. The subnets play an important role on the performance of AHNN. A simple but effective method of designing the subnets is developed in this paper. In this method, the subnets are designed according to the classification of the data attributes. For getting the classification, an effective method called Extension Data Attributes Classification(EDAC) is adopted. Soft sensor using AHNN based on EDAC(EDAC-AHNN) is introduced. As a case study, the production data of Purified Terephthalic Acid(PTA) solvent system are selected to examine the proposed model. The results of the EDAC-AHNN model are compared with the experimental data extracted from the literature, which shows the efficiency of the proposed model.展开更多

A partially purified enzyme from maize developing endosperms was prepared through 15%-35% ammonium sulfate fractionation, DEAE-cellulose anion exchange column chromatography and Sephadex GI50 gel filtration. The enzyme preparation was then used to demonstrate its main functional characteristics. The enzyme can use varieties of short and long chain length of nucleotides as substrates. However, the enzyme requires at least a minimum of 3 to 4 units of nucleotide chain length for the reaction to occur. The enzyme activity shows an optimum reaction in 50 mM sodium acetate buffer at pH 5.4 and is significantly inhibited by 6-azauridine as compared to other nucleotide analogs. By analyzing the data documented in literature and the results from the present study of the association of this enzyme with viruses and the distinctive inhibitory effect of 6-azauridine, it is speculated that this enzyme is likely associated with many other plant and animal viruses. The association of this enzyme on the surface of virus particles can be explored as a common antigen for developing a versatile antiviral vaccine.展开更多
