This paper compares 18th and 19th century travelogues written by women and men travelling the cultural contact zones of the empire, as well as fictional recreations of such first encounters. A juxtaposition of the writers' reaction to the dynamics of gazing and the ethics of touch yields surprising results. Many women travellers have no problem to acknowledge the reciprocity of the gaze, accepting, as a matter of course, that the objects of their ethnological interest will gaze at them in return. In comparison, male travellers often exhibit unease at becoming an object of appraisal and observation. Even more interestingly, male travellers often shy away from haptic contact with members of the indigenous population, whereas many (though not all) women are more tolerant of touch and proximity. Regarded as "unwomanly" by their contemporaries, they carved out for themselves roles which allowed for a more intimate interaction with foreign ethnicities; also, they wrote in different genres--private memoirs instead of official reports. But even in their (semi) fictional writings male authors seem to imagine inter-cultural encounters in different terms from women and tend not let their protagonists enter into close bodily contact with the indigenous population. 展开更多

The paper examines the development of "Negro poetry" from the Negritude movement through the analysis of Sartre as featured in Black Orpheus (1976). Following the analysis of Sartre, the author looks at the Black/White binary and its cultural and political context, which is based on the dominance of Europeans over Blacks. Then the author examines how Blacks have attempted to subvert this binary through alternative political stands, such as the practice of anti-racism, and innovative cultural art and literary forms, such as the Negritude movement. Like Sartre, the author focuses on "Negro poetry" and examines its limits and the challenges it put forth against the White supremacist elements in White dominant culture. The author concludes that while "Negro poetry" reflects a step forward in the anti-racist development of Black political and cultural identities, it is a limiting method of approach that does not subvert enough White dominant culture. This position enables the author to argue that, for example, the essentialist, racist, and gender--and sex--biases within the representations and images of the "feminine" and Black women are not sufficiently critically re-represented in "Negro poetry" of the Negritude movement. The method of this approach is (1) to look at Sartre's writing in Black Orpheus, (2) to include the secondary literature of this text within my analysis, (3) to examine sections of "Negro poetry" as featured in Black Orpheus, and (4) to critically access the racial, sex, and gender dimensions of "Negro poetry" as they relate to the achievements of the men or artists of the Negritude movement. 展开更多

Objective:Autoethnography combines personal experiences with cultural analysis, emerging as a response to the limitations of traditional ethnography. This review aimed to explore, describe, and delineate the utilization of autoethnography by nurses published in peer-reviewed journals. Methods:A scoping review was conducted according to the Arksey and O’Malley framework. On October 12,2023,autoethnographic studies in nursing were identified through searches of CINAHL,PubMed,PsycINFO,and Scopus.Peer-reviewed articles published in English language were retrieved. We applied no date restriction.Data were extracted on nursing, epiphany, results, style of writing, implications for nursing, and ethical considerations.Results:Twenty-six articles met the inclusion criteria.Mental health nursing, covered by nine articles, elucidated experiences of stigma, ethical dilemmas, and professional identity.Nursing education, represented by seven articles, highlighted identity struggles, systemic biases, and evolving pedagogies.Palliative care, addressed by three articles, provided insights into communication challenges and emotional complexities in end-of-life care. The remaining articles explored rehabilitation, cultural competence, and chronic pain management.A conceptual framework integrating ontological, epistemological, ethical, and practical dimensions was developed, emphasizing the interplay between personal and professional roles. Conclusions:This review underscores autoethnography’s value in uncovering the cultural and ethical dimensions of nursing. This framework advocates for a reflective, culturally attuned approach to healthcare, fostering transformative changes in nursing.Further research should explore underrepresented nursing specialties to harness autoethnography’s potential fully. 展开更多

Over the last decades the cultural, social and political landscapes of diversity are changing radically, but we do not even have the language through which contemporary superdiversity in the world can be described, conceptualized, understood, explained and researched. Many of the social thoughts and political actions on issues of diversity are now dominated by methodological nationalism and multiculturalism which, however, have to be called into question. As opposed to methodological nationalism, methodological cosmopolitanism is a promising lens through which to look at questions of diversity. And it is essential to draw an essential distinction between "cosmopolitanism" in a normative philosophical sense and "cosmopolitanization" as a structural phenomenon and as a social scientific research programme. Philosophical and normative cosmopolitanism can be combined with cosmopolitan social science to create a cosmopolitan realism. 展开更多
