This study observed the effects of alcuronium treatment in myasthenia gravis patients as compared with non-MG patients during operation. Ten MG patients (Ossermann class I - IV, scheduled for thymectomy) and 10 non-MG patients (ASA class I-Ⅱ, scheduled for operation) were selected. An induction dose of alcuronium 0. 2 mg/kg and thiopental 4-6 mg/kg was given , followed by intubation and ventilation with 50% nitrous oxide in oxygen and 0.5-1. 5% ethrane. Neuromuscular transmission was monitored using an accelerogragh and degrees of neuromuscular function at different depths were recorded. There were statistically significant differences between the two groups. The effect of alloferin in the MG group was quicker and deeper. This study also found a relation between MG class and the recovery of respiration: Respiratory recovery was quicker in classes I-Ⅱthan in classes Ⅲ-Ⅳ.展开更多

ARV RNA was detected in cloacal swabs in both bird groups from the first day throughout the 21 days experiment. Commercial broiler chickens, which had high maternal antibodies against ARV, showed minimum clinical signs, gross lesions, and lower numbers of birds with viral RNA excretion, whereas specific pathogen free (SPF) broiler chickens, which did not have antibody against ARVs, had 30% mortality, more severe signs, and higher numbers of birds excreting viral RNA. The highest peak of SPF birds excreting viral RNA occurred during the time of maximum mortality. The protective effect of maternal antibody on ARV pathogenesis in broiler chickens correlated with the detection of ARV RNA using the real-time RT-PCR.展开更多

Rats were divided into three groups: model, prednisone, and Sijunzi decoction, and were fed physiological saline, prednisone, or Sijunzi decoction, respectively. NMJ and muscle cell mitochondria ultrastructure were observed by transmission electron microscope. The amount of ATP was assessed by high performance liquid chromatography. The activities ofmitochondrial respiratory chain complexes I, Ⅱ, Ⅲ,and Ⅳ was determined using the Clark oxygen electrode method.RESULTS: In the model group, there were sparse muscle fibers, with decreased mitochondria, and sparse, diffluent, or absent NMJ folds. After intervention with Sijunzi decoction, the above pathology changes were improved: muscle fiber structure was clear and complete; the mitochondria count was higher; and the NMJ structure was close to normal. Gastrocnemius muscle mitochondria in the model group produced significantly less ATP than those in the prednisone group(P<0.01). Conversely, the ATP of Sijunzi decoction group was significantly higher than prednisone group(P<0.01). The activities of gastrocnemius muscle mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes I, Ⅱ, Ⅲ, and Ⅳ in both the prednisone and Sijunzi decoction groups was dramatically higher compared with the model group(P<0.05). The activities of complexes I and Ⅲ in the Sijunzi decoction group were significantly higher than those in the prednisone group(P<0.05), but there was no obvious difference in complex Ⅱ or Ⅳ activities between the two groups(P>0.05).CONCLUSION: Sijunzi decoction improved pathological changes in muscle mitochondria and NMJ,enhanced the amount of ATP in gastrocnemius muscle mitochondria, and improved the activities of respiratory chain complexes I, Ⅱ, Ⅲ, and Ⅳ(especially I and Ⅲ) of the EAMG rats.展开更多

A 76-year-old man had idiopathic anosmia of 2-year duration. Four months before consultation, he began to have drooping in the right upper eyelid along with muscle soreness, distension, and pain in the nape. His tongue was dark-red with a thin and white coating; his pulse was wiry and slippery. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, eyelid drooping and anosmia are the main signs of liver constraint and spleen deficiency. In Western Medicine, the diagnosis was ocular MG and idiopathic anosmia. Our patient, along with the literature, suggests that anosmia may be an early symptom before MG. MG accompanied by anosmia could be a special subtype of MG according to antibody production and symptoms.展开更多
