Comparison of Mode Quality Factors for Equilateral Triangular, Square and Rhombus Optical Micro-Resonators

The mode frequencies and the quality factors for the equilateral triangular resonator (ETR), the square resonator (SR) and the rhombus resonator (RR) are numerically calculated by the finite difference time domain technique and the Padé approximation. The numerical results show that the resonant modes confined in an equilateral triangular cavity have much higher quality factors than those in the square or the rhombus cavities. The modes in the ETR are totally confined in transverse direction while those in the SR and RR are only partly confined. For the ETR with the side length of 4μm and the refractive index of 3 2, the mode quality factor of about 5 5×10 3 at the wavelength of 1 55μm has been obtained. 展开更多

Analysis of modes in a free-standing nanowire cavity by FDTD simulation

The mode frequency and the quality factor of nanowire cavities are calculated for the intensity spectrum obtained by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique and the Pade approximation. In the free-standing nanowire cavity with the dielectric constant ε=6.0 and the length of 5μm, the quality factors of 130,159,and 151 are obtained for modes with frequency around 798 THz,at the cavity radius of 60 nm, 75 nm, and 90 nm, respectively. The obtained field distribution of the fundamental transverse mode shows that the mode field is confined very well by the nanowire cavity even when the radius of nanowire is much smaller than the mode wavelength. 展开更多

This paper proposes a time-domain clustered transmitter power adaptation scheme for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, which can significantly reduce the feedback amount during power adaptation comparison with conventional frequency-domain adaptation schemes. It was found that the cluster size plays an important role on the adaptation performance, especially for the vehicular environment. Simulation results showed that using Lagrange interpolation to obtain an explicit curve of Doppler frequency vs cluster size yields good trade-off between the resulted bit error rate (BER) and the amount of feedback. 展开更多

The effect of the microstrip bend on the propagation characteristics of a microstrip line was investigated based on the Finite-Difference Time-Domain(FDTD)method.The dispersive characteristics of a microstrip line with a bend are quite different from that of a uniform straight microstrip line.The effect of bend discontinuity on propagation constants deceases exponentially with the distance form the corner of the bend.This can be explained by the fact that the higher order modes excited by the bend discontinuities have intrinsic properties of exponentially decay with the distance from the bend discontinuities.This effect can be negligible(less than five percent)when the distance is beyond ten times of conductor strip width.The S parameters and propagation constants comparison between unmitered and mitered bends are also presented.The proposed method which takes advantage of the FDTD algorithm and the Root Mean Square Deviation(RMSD)analysis is also an effective way for analyzing the dispersion characteristics of other planar transmission lines. 展开更多

Non-spreading nature of Bessel spatiotemporal wavepackets is theoretically and experimentally investigated and orders of magnitude improvement in the spatiotemporal spreading has been demonstrated.The spatiotemporal confinement provided by the Bessel spatiotemporal wavepacket is further exploited to transport transverse orbital angular momentum through embedding spatiotemporal optical vortex into the Bessel spatiotemporal wavepacket, constructing a new type of wavepacket: Bessel spatiotemporal optical vortex. Both numerical and experimental results demonstrate that spatiotemporal vortex structure can be well maintained and confined through much longer propagation. High order spatiotemporal optical vortices can also be better confined in the spatiotemporal domain and prevented from further breaking up, overcoming a potential major obstacle for future applications of spatiotemporal vortex. 展开更多

Two different methods to model a point absorber wave energy converter (WEC) with direct drive linear power take-off (PTO) are proposed in the present study: the frequency domain (FD) method and the time domain (TD) method. In the FD analysis, the frequency response function (FRF) of the WEC device is obtained via the equation of motion, and the expressions of power capture width in regular and random waves are derived as well. In the TD modeling, based on a state space approximation of the convolution term in the motion equation, both regular wave and random wave simulations are carded out. The regular wave simulation results indicate that the state space approximation is sufficiently accurate and the capture width reaches the maximum in the vicinity of the natural frequency. In the random wave simulations, the effects of buoy size, the PTO damping and wave climate on the power capture width are discussed in detail, which leads to the conclusion that the capture widths are influenced by the natural frequency of the WEC device, peak frequency of the wave spectrum, the amplitude of FRF and PTO damping. Furthermore, the increase of the capture width is at the cost of a relatively large buoy size and PTO damping when control is not included. 展开更多

A dynamic model is established for an offset-disc rotor system with a mechanical gear coupling, which takes into consideration the nonlinear restoring force of rotor support and the effect of coupling misalignment. Periodic solutions are obtained through harmonic balance method with alternating frequency/time domain(HB-AFT) technique, and then compared with the results of numerical simulation. Good agreement confirms the feasibility of HB-AFT scheme. Moreover, the Floquet theory is adopted to analyze motion stability of the system when rotor runs at different speed intervals. A simple strategy to determine the monodromy matrix is introduced and two ways towards unstability are found for periodic solutions: the period doubling bifurcation and the secondary Hopf bifurcation. The results obtained will contribute to the global response analysis and dynamic optimal design of rotor systems. 展开更多

Motivated by the recent work that the periodicity of a black hole is responsible for the area spectrum,we exclusively utilize the period of motion of an outgoing wave,which is shown to be related to the vibrational frequency of the perturbed black hole,to study area spectra of a non-rotating BTZ black hole and a rotating BTZ black hole.It is found that the area spectra and entropy spectra for both space times are equally spaced.In addition,we find that though the entropy spectra of the 3-dimensional BTZ black holes take the same form as those of the 4-dimensional black holes,the area spectra depend on the dimension of space times.Our result confirms that the entropy spectrum of a black hole is more fundamental than the area spectrum. 展开更多

Modal identification involves estimating the modal parameters, such as modal frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes, of a structural system from measured data. Under the condition that noisy impulse response signals associated with multiple input and output locations have been measured, the primary objective of this study is to apply the local or global noise removal technique for improving the modal identification based on the polyreference time domain (PTD) method. While the traditional PTD method improves modal parameter estimation by over-specifying the computational model order to absorb noise, this paper proposes an approach using the actual system order as the computational model order and rejecting much noise prior to performing modal parameter estimation algorithms. Two noise removal approaches are investigated: a "local" approach which removes noise from one signal at a time, and a "global" approach which removes the noise of multiple measured signals simultaneously. The numerical investigation in this article is based on experimental measurements from two test setups: a cantilever beam with 3 inputs and 10 outputs, and a hanged plate with 4 inputs and 32 outputs. This paper demonstrates that the proposed noise-rejection method outperforms the traditional noise-absorption PTD method in several crucial aspects. 展开更多
