On the one hand, the delay may induce oscillation via the Hopf bifurcation. In the present paper, a congestion control model of n dimensions is considered to study the delay-induced oscillation. By linear analysis of the n-dimensional system, the critical delay for the Hopf bifurcation is obtained. To describe the relation between the delay and oscillation analytically, the method of multiple scales (MMS) is employed to obtain the bifurcating periodic solution. On the other hand, it can be understood that the oscillation will increase the risk of congestion for the network system. To avoid the congestion derived from the oscillation, a new control scheme is proposed by perturbing the delay periodically. Particularly, according to our study, it is possible to control the oscillation by perturbing only one of the n delays. This provides a practical scheme for the oscillation control in the real network system. By MMS, the strengths of the perturbations are predicted analytically such that the oscillation disappears. To give an example, an eight-dimensional model is studied in detail. The analytical results are in good agreement with the numerical simulations.展开更多

Moreover, the Logistic time series changing from period-doubling bifurcation to chaos is tested first using this method. Results indicate that it can distinguish inherent dynamics of time series and can detect mutations. Considering that cracks in the concrete dam constitute an open, dissipative and complex nonlinear dynamical system, a typical crack on the downstream face of a concrete gravity arch dam is analyzed with the proposed method. Two distinct mutations are discovered to indicate that the abnormality diagnosis of cracks in the concrete dam is achieved dynamically through this method. Furthermore, because it can be directly utilized in the measured crack opening displacement series to complete abnormality diagnosis, it has a good prospect for practical applications.展开更多

The stability of the trivial equilibrium of the net- work is analyzed and the condition for the existence of Hopf bifurcation is obtained by discussing the associated characteristic equation. Hopf bifurcation is investigated by using the perturbation scheme without the norm form theory and the center man- ifold theorem. Numerical simulations are performed to validate the theoretical results and chaotic behaviors are observed. Phase plots, time history plots, power spectra, and Poincar6 section are presented to confirm the chaoticity. To the best of our knowledge, the chaotic behavior in this paper is new to the previously published works.展开更多

For this system without diffusion, there exist three bifurcation phenomena: Transcritical bifurcation, singularity induced bifurcation, and Hopf bifurcation. Compared with other biological systems described by differential equations, singularity induced bifurcation only occurs in singular system and usually links with the expansion of population. When the diffusion is present, it is shown that the positive equilibrium point loses its stability at some critical values of diffusion rate and periodic oscillations occur due to the increase of time delay. Furthermore, numerical simulations illustrate the effectiveness of results and the related biological implications are discussed.展开更多
