The U bend duct has a cross section of 50 mm×50 mm and a ratio of bend mean radius R c to hydraulic diameter of the duct D of 0.65. The rotation axis is parallel with the bend axis. Three cases with rotation number of Ro=-0.2, 0 and 0.2, respectively, are studied at a Reynolds number of 100 000. The results show that the combined effect of rotation and bend curvature strongly influences the flow field, especially in the downstream region of the bend. The evident difference among the flow patterns with different rotation number shows that the secondary flow induced by Coriolis force takes an important role in determining the flow structure.展开更多

Some key techniques including stereo display processing and high precision video scaling based bicubic interpolation, and their hardware implementations which improve the image quality are presented. The proposed HMD100 chip is verified by the field-programmable gate array (FPGA). As one of innovative and high integration SoC chips, HMD100 is designed by a digital and analog mixed circuit. It can support binocular stereo display, has better scaling effect and integration. Hence it is applicable in virtual reality (VR), 3D games and other microdisplay domains.展开更多

Development and usage of medical image processing toolkit have become an important research trend. It is a fundamental task to master their image rendering principles and data organization mode in order to use these toolkits. MITK (Medical Imaging Toolkit, from www.mitk.net) with the important characteristics of inheritance and virtual function uses the Object-Oriented design approach. This paper researches the data organization mode and coordinate translation of MITK and presents an algorithm based on OpenGL to rewrite the image-rendering function of MITK. Using the algorithm, the rewritten rendering function has the same rendering effect as the one in MITK. By rewriting the virtual image-rendering function and using the capability that a view window can load many data model, users can neatly render various graphics and images. Though the researches of this paper are based on the mitklmageModel class, the algorithm also is fit for 2D "widgets" class.展开更多

The present study deals with flow visualization over concave surface for gas turbine applications. The aim is to comprehend qualitatively the flow trends, particularly the Gortler vortices formation and development. Gortler vortices have the shape of mushroom-like vortices regularly spaced at 25 mm. These vortices grow and increase in strength more rapidly along the surface in the case of the same grid of turbulence applied to the measuring section. The curvature radius of the studied blade is 0.5 m and the stream turbulence intensity level is 2.6%. The velocity field is measured by hot wire anemometer in the streamwise direction. The velocity profile is found to be highly distorted by the momentum transfer associated with Gortler vortices. The results are compared to Blasius flow and to literature data for a blade with curvature radius equal to 2 m.展开更多

METHODS: Tissues are complex structures compri...AIM: To develop a method of labeling and microdissecting mouse Kupffer cells within an extraordinarily short period of time using laser capture microdissection (LCM). METHODS: Tissues are complex structures comprised of a heterogeneous population of interconnected cells. LCM offers a method of isolating a single cell type from specific regions of a tissue section. LCM is an essential approach used in conjunction with molecular analysis to study the functional interaction of cells in their native tissue environment. The process of labeling and acquiring cells by LCM prior to mRNA isolation can be elaborate, thereby subjecting the RNA to considerable degradation. Kupffer cell labeling is achieved by injecting India ink intravenously, thus circumventing the need for in vitro staining. The significance of this novel approach was validated using a cholestatic liver injury model. RESULTS: mRNA extracted from the microdissected cell population displayed marked increases in colonystimulating factor-1 receptor and Kupffer cell receptor message expression, which demonstrated Kupffer cell enrichment. Gene expression by Kupffer ceils derived from bile-duct-ligated, versus sham-operated, mice was compared. Microarray analysis revealed a significant (2.5-fold, q value 〈 10) change in 493 genes. Based on this fold-change and a standardized PubMed search, 10 genes were identified that were relevant to the ability of Kupffer cells to suppress liver injury. CONCLUSION; The methodology outlined herein provides an approach to isolating high quality RNA from Kupffer cells, without altering the tissue integrity.展开更多

Herein, it was found that the color of Morpho menelaus butt...The Morpho butterfly is famous for its typical structural color and has increasingly attracted the interest of scholars in a wide variety of research fields. Herein, it was found that the color of Morpho menelaus butterfly wings is not only structure-based but also viewing-angle-dependent. Firstly, the discoloration effect of this typical butterfly was confirmed by a series of experiments. Then, the general form, arrangements, and geometrical dimensions of the scales were observed using a stereomicroscope. Scanning electron microscopy was also used to examine the two-dimensional morphologies and structures of a single scale. Afterwards, one model with the optimized three-dimensional profile of the structure was described using Pro-engineer software. The associate model was then analyzed to reconstruct the process between the incident light and the model surface. Finally, the mechanism of the angle-dependent discoloration effect was analyzed by theoretical calculation and optical simulation. Different light propagation paths and the length of the incident light at different angles caused destructive or constructive interference between the light reflected from the different layers. The different spectra of the reflected light make the wings appear with different structural colors, thereby endowing the angle-dependent discoloration effect. The consistency of the calculation and simulation results confirms that these structures possess an excellent angle-dependent discoloration effect. This functional "biomimetic structure" would not only be of great scientific interest but could also have a great impact in a wide range of applications such as reflective displays, credit card security, and military stealth technology.展开更多

We inv...Ecotourism encourages an environmentally friendly exploration of the world's natural habitats. Tourists often engage in wildlife photography, an activity that is generally not considered disturbing to animals. We investigated the effects of cam- era-related stimuli to determine whether shutter noise and/or flash affected the immediate behavior of female crested anoles Ano- lis cristaellus. Anoles decreased their display rate following stimuli that included shutter noises, but did not change their behavior in response to flash or silence treatments. To determine the relative importance of this response, we observed anole behavior fol- lowing playbacks of calls from kestrels Falco sparverius, a predator, and bananaquits Coereba flaveola, a non-predator. Anoles decreased display rates following kestrel calls when compared to their response to bananaquit calls. Furthermore, anoles spent a greater proportion of time displaying following bananaquit calls compared to both kestrel calls and silence. The magnitude of response to shutter noises was about the same as that to predator calls. This demonstrates that photography may not be as benign as commonly believed, and we should consider whether restrictions on camera noises should be implemented to reduce ani- mal disturbance展开更多
