The primary objective of this study was to investigate the impact of observation scale on the estimation of soil thermal properties.Transients are usually filtered out and ignored when classical Fourier approaches are used to deconstruct and model temperature time series.It was hypothesized that examination of such transients may be more important in identifying and quantifying short-term perturbations in internal soil heat transfer induced by agronomic disturbances. Data-logged temperatures were collected at 10-minute intervals from thermistor probes installed at 10 and 25 cm depths in isolated areas of two grassed plots.One plot(6T)had been treated twice with 6 Mg ha^(-1)composted turkey litter as received.The other plot(NPK)was fertilized at the same time with NPK fertilizer.Various methods were used to analyze the series to obtain apparent soil thermal diffusivity(D-value)at various time scales.Results supported the hypothesis that short-term differences in internal soil heat transfer between the 6T and NPK plots were more manifest and effectively captured by estimated D-values calculated from the monthly and daily partial series.The 6T plot had higher soil organic matter content than the NPK plot and had lower apparent soil thermal diffusivity.Diurnal soil temperature amplitudes, required to calculate the mean D-values from partial series,were more effectively obtained using a temperature change rate method.The more commonly used Fourier analysis tended to be effective for this purpose when the partial series reasonably presented well-defined diurnal patterns of increasing and decreasing temperatures. 展开更多

This study examined the spatiotemporal dynamics of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and spectral slope (S), and further to analyze its sources in three productive water supplies (Eagle Creek, Geist and Morse reservoirs) from Indiana, USA. The re- sults showed that he absorption coefficient aCDOM(440) ranged from 0.37 m-1 to 3.93 m-1 with an average of 1.89 ± 0.76 m-1 (±SD) for the aggregated dataset, and S varied from 0.0048 nm -1 to 0.0239 nm-1 with an average of 0.0108 ±0.0040 nmI. A significant relation- ship between S and aCDOM(440) can be fitted with a power equation (S = 0.013 × aCDOM(440)-0.42, R2 = 0.612), excluding data from Geist Reservoir during high flow (12 April 2010) and the Morse Reservoir on 25 June 2010 due to a T-storm achieves even higher determina- tion coefficient (R2 = 0.842). Correlation analysis indicated that aCDOM(440) has strong association with inorganic suspended matter (ISM) concentration (0.231 〈 R2 〈 0.786) for each of the field surveys, and this trend followed the aggregated datasets (R2 = 0.447, p 〈 0.001). In contrast, chlorophyll-a was only correlated with aCDOM(440) in summer and autumn (0.081 〈 R2 〈 0.763), indicating that CDOM is mainly from terrigenous sources in early spring and that phytoplankton contributed during the algal blooming season. The S value was used to characterize CDOM origin. The results indicate that the CDOM source is mainly controlled by hydrological varia- tions, while phytoplankton originated organic matter also closely linked with CDOM dynamics in three productive reservoirs. 展开更多

The carbon and nitrogen isotopes in the surface sediments,plants,and soil in the upper reaches of the Chaobai River have been researched.The results showed 27.75‰-21.58‰ and 1.32‰-6.74‰ for carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios in the surface sediments,respectively.The sources of sedimentary organic matter in this area are soil organic matter,aquatic vascular plants,and riverine plankton,respectively,and a significant contributor to sediment in the Chaohe River,the Baihe River,and the Miyun Reservoir areas is soil organic matter.Furthermore,part of sedimentary organic matter in the Miyun Reservoir is attributed to the input from the Chaohe River and the Baihe River,the other is from C4 vegetation growing around individual point stations at the Miyun Reservoir.Compared with the situation in Hebei Province,the contribution of soil organic matter decreased significantly and river plankton and aquatic vascular plants increased significantly in Beijing municipal areas.This study reveals that the source of organic matter has a close relationship with the soil erosion. 展开更多

The performance and mechanism of manganate preoxidation process for organics removal were investigated in the present paper.The results showed that manganate was a potentially powerful oxidizing agent and could make the natural organic matter(NOM)concentration of sample solution increase.The process of manganate in combination with ferrous sulphate(FeMnO)was effective for organics removal and with the highest removal rate of 89%when the FeMnO dose was 0.18 mmol/L.The fluorescence analysis showed that the fluorescence intensity values related to hydrophobic acids and model humic acid polymers were the highest and the relative position of the main peak fluorescence intensity was shifted towards lower emission wavelengths,which indicated the reduction in the degree of aromaticity of residual organic matter fraction. 展开更多
