A crystal plasticity finite element model was developed for the drawing deformation of pure copper micro wire, based on rate-dependent crystal plasticity theory. The impact of wire diameter compression ratio on the micro-mechanical deformation behavior during the wire drawing process was investigated. Results indicate that the internal deformation and slip of the drawn wire are unevenly distributed, forming distinct slip and non-slip zones.Additionally, horizontal strain concentration bands develop within the drawn wire.As the wire diameter compression ratio increases, the strength of the slip systems and the extent of slip zones inside the deformation zone also increase. However, the fluctuating stress state, induced by contact pressure and frictional stress, results in a rough and uneven wire surface and diminishes the stability of the drawing process. 展开更多

Beta Ti−35Nb sandwich-structured composites with various reinforcing layers were designed and produced using additive manufacturing(AM)to achieve a balance between light weight and high strength. The impact of reinforcing layers on the compressive deformation behavior of porous composites was investigated through micro-computed tomography(Micro-CT)and finite element method(FEM)analyses. The results indicate that the addition of reinforcement layers to sandwich structures can significantly enhance the compressive yield strength and energy absorption capacity of porous metal structures;Micro-CT in-situ observation shows that the strain of the porous structure without the reinforcing layer is concentrated in the middle region, while the strain of the porous structure with the reinforcing layer is uniformly distributed;FEM analysis reveals that the reinforcing layers can alter stress distribution and reduce stress concentration, thereby promoting uniform deformation of the porous structure. The addition of reinforcing layer increases the compressive yield strength of sandwich-structured composite materials by 124%under the condition of limited reduction of porosity, and the yield strength increases from 4.6 to 10.3 MPa. 展开更多

The grain statistics effect was investigated through asymmetric rolling of pure copper foil by a realistic polycrystalline aggregates model and crystal plasticity element finite model.A polycrystalline aggregate model was generated and a crystal plasticity-based finite element model was developed for each grain and the specimen as a whole. The crystal plasticity model itself is rate dependent and accounts for local dissipative hardening effects and the original orientation of each grain was generated based on the orientation distribution function(ODF).The deformation behaviors, including inhomogeneous material flow, decrease of contact press and roll force with the increase of grain size for the constant size of specimens, were studied. It is revealed that when the specimens are composed of only a few grains across thickness, the grains with different sizes, shapes and orientations are unevenly distributed in the specimen and each grain plays a significant role in micro-scale plastic deformation and leads to inhomogeneous deformation and the scatter of experimental and simulation results. The slip system activity was examined and the predicted results are consistent with the surface layer model. The slip band is strictly influenced by the misorientation of neighbor grain with consideration of slip system activity.Furthermore,it is found that the decrease of roll force and the most active of slip system in surface grains are caused by the increase of free surface grain effect when the grain size is increased. The results of the physical experiment and simulation provide a basic understanding of micro-scaled plastic deformation behavior in asymmetric foil rolling. 展开更多

As a new attempt, equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) of nickel-titanium shape memory alloy (NiTi SMA) tube was investigated by means of process experiment, finite element method (FEM) and microscopy. NiTi SMA tube with the steel core in it was inserted into the steel can during ECAE of NiTi SMA tube. Based on rigid-viscoplastic FEM, multiple coupled boundary conditions and multiple constitutive models were used for finite element simulation of ECAE of NiTi SMA tube, where the effective stress field, the effective strain field and the velocity field were obtained. Finite element simulation results are in good accordance with the experimental ones. Finite element simulation results reveal that the velocity field shows the minimum value in the corner of NiTi SMA tube, where severe shear deformation occurs. Microstructural observation results reveal that severe plastic deformation leads to a certain grain orientation as well as occurrence of substructures in the grain interior and dynamic recovery occurs during ECAE of NiTi SMA tube. ECAE of NiTi SMA tube provides a new approach to manufacturing ultrafine-grained NiTi SMA tube. 展开更多

Identifying suitable processing window is necessary but difficult for achieving favorable microstructure and performance in extrusion of large thick-walled pipe with difficult-to-deform Inconel 625 alloy. In this work, a method was established for identifying the extrusion process window considering temperature control using response surface methodology. Firstly, the response surface models, which correlate temperature rise and peak temperature to key extrusion parameters, have been developed by orthogonal regression based on finite element calculated data. Secondly, the coupled effects of the key extrusion parameters on the temperature rise and peak temperature have been disclosed based on the regression models. Lastly, suitable extrusion processing windows, which are described by contour map of peak temperature in the space of extrusion speed and initial billet temperature, have been established for different extrusion ratios. Using the identified process window, a suitable combination of the key extrusion parameters can be determined conveniently and quickly. 展开更多

The overbroken rock mass of gob areas is made up of broken and accumulated rock blocks compressed to some extent by the overlying strata. The beating pressure of the gob can directly affect the safety of mining fields, formarion of road retained along the next goaf and seepage of water and methane through the gob. In this paper, the software RFPA'2000 is used to construct numerical models. Especially the Euler method of control volume is proposed to solve the simulation difficulty arising from plastically finite deformations. The results show that three characteristic regions occurred in the gob area: (1) a naturally accumulated region, 0-10 m away from unbroken surrounding rock walls, where the beating pressure is nearly zero; (2) an overcompacted region, 10-20 m away from unbroken walls, where the beating pressure results in the maximum value of the gob area; (3) a stable compaction region, more than 20 m away from unbroken walls and occupying absolutely most of the gob area, where the beating pressures show basically no differences. Such a characteristic can exolain the easy-seeoaged “O”-ring phenomena around mining fields very well. 展开更多

A three-dimensional finite element model was established for the milling of thin-walled parts. The physical model of the milling of the part was established using the AdvantEdge FEM software as the platform. The aluminum alloy impeller was designated as the object to be processed and the boundary conditions which met the actual machining were set. Through the solution, the physical quantities such as the three-way cutting force, the tool temperature, and the tool stress were obtained, and the calculation of the elastic deformation of the thin-walled blade of the free-form surface at the contact points between the tool and the workpiece was realized. The elastic deformation law of the thin-walled blade was then predicted. The results show that the maximum deviation between the predicted value and the actual measured machining value of the elastic deformation was 26.055 μm; the minimum deviation was 2.011 μm, with the average deviation being 10.154 μm. This shows that the prediction is in close agreement with the actual result. 展开更多

Deformation behavior of slab at the straightening stage during continuous casting was simulated by the explicit dynamic finite element method, and the stress distribution along the width direction of the slab and its change regularity at slab center during continuous casting were obtained. The influence of distribution and change of stress on the propagation of longitudinal cracks on slab surface was discussed. The results show that the tensional stress appears on slab surface at the inner arc side and the compressive stress appears on slab surface at the outer arc side at stages 6-8 in straightening zone during continuous casting.Longitudinal cracks generally appear on slab top surface and do not appear on slab bottom surface, which are also observed in industry. 展开更多

A model suitable for describing the mechanical response of thin elastic objects is proposed to simulate the deformation of guide wires in minimally invasive interventions. The main objective of this simulation is to provide doctors an opportunity to rehearse the surgery and select an optimal operation plan before the real surgery. In this model the guide wire is discretized with the multi-body representation and its elastic energy derivate from elastic theory is a polynomial function of the nodal displacements. The vascular structure is represented by a tetrahedron mesh extended from the triangular mesh of the artery, which can be extracted from the patient's CT image data. The model applies the energy decline process of the conjugate gradient method to the deformation simulation of the guide wire. Experimental results show that the polynomial relationship between elastic energy and nodal displacements tremendously simplifies the evaluation of the conjugate gradient method and significantly improves the model's efficiency. Compared with models depending on an explicit scheme for evaluation, the new model is not only non-conditionally stable but also more efficient. The model can be applied to the real-time simulation of guide wire in a vascular structure. 展开更多

Using ANSYS software, we developed a modeling program for several kinds of wire ropes with metal cores and built a geometric model for the 6×19 IWS wire rope. Through proper grid partitioning, a finite element model for calculating the deforma-tion of wire rope was obtained. Completely constraining one end of the wire rope and applying an axial force to the other end, we established the boundary conditions for solving the model. In addition, we numerically simulated the stress and deformation of the wire, obtaining the deformation distribution of each wire within the wire rope under different laying directions. At the end, a tensile test of the 6×19 IWS wire rope was carried out and the results of simulation and experiment compared. 展开更多

For contact dominated numerical control(NC) bending process of tube, the effect of friction on bending deformation behaviors should be focused on to achieve precision bending forming. A three dimensional(3D) elastic-plastic finite element(FE) model of NC bending process was established under ABAQUS/Explicit platform, and its reliability was validated by the experiment. Then, numerical study on bending deformation behaviors under different frictions between tube and various dies was explored from multiple aspects such as wrinkling, wall thickness change and cross section deformation. The results show that the large friction of wiper die-tube reduces the wrinkling wave ratio η and cross section deformation degree ΔD and increases the wall thinning degree Δt. The large friction of mandrel-tube causes large η, Δt and ΔD, and the onset of wrinkling near clamp die. The large friction of pressure die-tube reduces Δt and ΔD, and the friction on this interface has little effect on η. The large friction of bending die-tube reduces η and ΔD, and the friction on this interface has little effect on Δt. The reasonable friction coefficients on wiper die-tube, mandrel-tube, pressure die-tube and bending die-tube of 21-6-9(0Cr21Ni6Mn9N) stainless steel tube in NC bending are 0.05-0.15, 0.05-0.15, 0.25-0.35 and 0.25-0.35, respectively. The results can provide a guideline for applying the friction conditions to establish the robust bending environment for stable and precise bending deformation of tube bending. 展开更多

Three models are used in the calculation. Model 1 takes into account the longitudinal and transverse inherent strains; model 2 considers only longitudinal inherent strain; model 3 also takes into account the longitudinal and transverse inherent strains, but inherent strains are taken according to the function instead of the constant, for simulating the variation of the girder’s stiffness during welding process. The result shows the deformation of model 2 is less than that of the model 1, the error is less than 10% of the absolute displacement. So the longitudinal inherent strain is the main factor determining boxes-girder’s welding deformation. The deformation of model 3 is also less than that of the model 1, because the inherent strains of the model 3 are less than that of the model 1. At last, the welding deformation of the whole underframe was analyzed. The analysis results can be taken as references not only for the choices of welding sequence, welding parameters and fixture’s location, but also for welding deformation prediction of other car chassis. 展开更多

The pile-soil system interaction computational model in liquefaction-induced lateral spreading ground was established by the finite difference numerical method.Considering an elastic-plastic subgrade reaction method, numerical methods involving finite difference approach of pile in liquefaction-induced lateral spreading ground were derived and implemented into a finite difference program.Based on the monotonic loading tests on saturated sand after liquefaction, the liquefaction lateral deformation of the site where group piles are located was predicted. The effects of lateral ground deformation after liquefaction on a group of pile foundations were studied using the fmite difference program mentioned above, and the failure mechanism of group piles in liquefaction-induced lateral spreading ground was obtained. The applicability of the program was preliminarily verified. The results show that the bending moments at the interfaces between liquefied and non-liquefied soil layers are larger than those at the pile's top when the pile's top is embedded. The value of the additional static bending moment is larger than the peak dynamic bending moment during the earthquake,so in the pile foundation design, more than the superstructure's dynamics should be considered and the effect of lateral ground deformation on pile foundations cannot be neglected. 展开更多

Our study ... This paper presents finite element modeling (FEM) to simulate the present-day stress field and crustal deformation using NE-SW structural section in the central Seismic Gap region of the Garhwal Himalaya. Our study deals with the effect of geometrical characteristics and rock layer parameters on the upper crust. Modeling results show that two types of tectonic regimes developed in the central Seismic Gap region: the geotectonics of the northern part has been controlled by regional compression, whereas southern part is characterized by regional extension. Correspondingly, thrust faults are induced in the northern part and normal faults are extensively developed in the southern front. Those evidences noticeably indicate that the compressive tectonic environment of the Himalaya becomes change into the extensional tectonic regime in its front. The computed shear stress accumulation along the northern fiat of Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT) implies that considerable amount of interseismic stress is building up along the MHT system in the Himalaya, which ultimately release through the possible future great Himalayan earthquake (M 〉 8). The comparison between our modeled stress field, faulting pattern and horizontal shortening rate with the distribution of the microseismic events, focal mechanism solutions, active faulting and GPS data in the central Seismic Gap region shows good agreement. 展开更多
