Modeling and performance evaluation of QoS-aware job scheduling of computational grids

To achieve high quality of service (QoS) on computational grids, the QoS-aware job scheduling is investigated for a hierarchical decentralized grid architecture that consists of multilevel schedulers. An integrated QoS-aware job dispatching policy is proposed, which correlates priorities of incoming jobs used for job selecting at the local scheduler of the grid node with the job dispatching policies at the global scheduler for computational grids. The stochastic high-level Petri net (SHLPN) model of a two-level hierarchy computational grid architecture is presented, and a model refinement is made to reduce the complexity of the model solution. A performance analysis technique based on the SHLPN is proposed to investigate the QoS-aware job scheduling policy. Numerical results show that the QoS-aware job dispatching policy outperforms the QoS-unaware job dispatching policy in balancing the high-priority jobs, and thus enables priority-based QoS. 展开更多

To improve the performance and robustness in service discovery, a self-organizing mechanism for service alliances of Service Providers (SPs) is proposed in this paper. According to the similarity of service content, an SP publishes its services in a partition of SPs to construct connections between highly similar SPs. These SPs constitute a self-organized distributed environment. A self-organizing protocol is designed to ensure the correctness of the construction of the alliances. The protocol consists of four stages - initiating stage, developing stage, developed stage and degradation stage. The experimental results demonstrate that this protocol ensures the self-property. The visualization of alliance developing stages illustrates that sub-alliances are sp lit in balance and self-connected. Compared with the Random Walker algorithm, the time cost and the number of forwarded messages in alliance-based mechanism is lower in service discovery. On three typical topologies (Grid, Random-Graph, Power-Law), the success rate of service discovery is much higher, which shows that self-organized alliances are helpful to enhance the discovery performance. 展开更多

Recent rapid rise of indoor location based services for smartphones has further increased the importance of precise localization of Wi-Fi Access Point(AP).However,most existing AP localization algorithms either exhibit high errors or need specialized hardware in practical scenarios.In this paper,we propose a novel RSSI gradient-based AP localization algorithm.It consists of the following three major steps:firstly,it uses the local received signal strength variations to estimate the direction(minus gradient) of AP,then employs a direction clustering method to identify and filter measurement outliers,and finally adopts triangulation method to localize AP with the selected gradient directions.Experimental results demonstrate that the average localization error of our proposed algorithm is less than 2meters,far outperforming that of the weighted centroid approach. 展开更多

In cloud computing,the number of replicas and deployment strategy have extensive impacts on user's requirement and storage efficiency.Therefore,in this paper,a new definition of file access popularity according to users' preferences,and its prediction algorithm are provided to predict file access trend with historical data.Files are sorted by priority depending on their popularity.A mathematical model between file access popularity and the number of replicas is built so that the reliability is increased efficiently.Most importantly,we present an optimal strategy of dynamic replicas deployment based on the file access popularity strategy with the overall concern of nodes' performance and load condition.By this strategy,files with high priority will be deployed on nodes with better performance therefore higher quality of service is guaranteed.The strategy is realized in the Hadoop platform.Performance is compared with that of default strategy in Hadoop and CDRM strategy.The result shows that the proposed strategy can not only maintain the system load balance,but also supply better service performance,which is consistent with the theoretical analysis. 展开更多

In this paper, we outline the AAL system currently developed in the European project Robot-Era, and describe the engineering aspects and the serviceoriented software architecture of the domestic robot, a service robot with advanced manipulation capabilities. Based on the robot operating system(ROS) middleware, our software integrates a large set of advanced algorithms for navigation, perception, and manipulation. With the advent of the era of cloud computing, the high energy consumption of cloud computing data centers has become a prominent problem, and how to reduce the energy consumption of cloud computing data center and improve the efficiency of data center has become the research focus of researchers all the world. In a cloud environment, virtual machine consolidation(VMC) is an effective strategy that can improve the energy efficiency. However, at the same time, in the process of virtual machine consolidation, we need to deal with the tradeoff between energy consumption and excellent service performance to meet service level agreement(SLA). In this paper, we propose a new virtual machine consolidation framework for achieving better energy efficiency-Improved Underloaded Decision(IUD) algorithm and Minimum Average Utilization Difference(MAUD) algorithm. Finally, based on real workload data on Planet Lab, experiments have been done with the cloud simulation platform Cloud Sim. The experimental result shows that the proposed algorithm can reduce the energy consumption and SLA violation of data centers compared with existing algorithms, improving the energy efficiency of data centers. 展开更多

In order to guarantee the overall return on investment (ROI), improve user experience and quality of service (QoS), save energy, reduce electra magnetic interference (EMI) and radiation pollution, and enable the sustainable deployment of new profitable applications and services in heterogeneous wireless networks coexistence reality, this paper proposes a cross-network cooperation mechanism to effectively share network resources and infrastructures, and then adaptively control and match multi-network energy distribution characteristics according to actual user/service requirements in different geographic areas. Some idle or lightly-loaded base stations (BS or BSs) will be temporally turned off for saving energy and reducing EMI. Initial simulation results show that the proposed approach can significantly improve the overall energy efficiency and QoS performance across multiple cooperative wireless networks. 展开更多

The public lighting in the capital city Yaounde is an example of solar energy promotion. The purpose of this paper is among other things aiming at assessing the solar energy resources of central Africa and making sure it can be used optimally at least for public lighting. Based on the knowledge from data collected and field experience for three years, the authors will assess the implementation of the technology and show how the use of solar energy can solve some problems in the city of Yaounde even when the area is grid connected. This paper will also identify actions for improved access to sustainable, friendly, affordable solar energy services to users, as well as a significant improvement of energy infrastructure and energy efficiency in the city. The authors will also address issues on identified obstacles for the promotion of solar energy in order to help the cities in sub Saharan countries to develop a vision aiming at developing good solar energy policy and better contribute to fight against poverty and climate change. 展开更多

The aim is to develop a form of technical assistance that supports them in the control of schedules, prevention of dangerous areas in the work place, warnings and automatic alarm generation. The device chosen to exchange all this information is a smartphone based on Android Operating System and GPS (Global Positioning System) technology mainly. A set of Android applications has been developed using Java language, and controlling the device via Google-developed Java libraries. All of them are connected to the Server Application through the Communications Module. The Server Application Module provides the assistants or psychologists the possibility of supervise all the handicapped people activities. The assistants, psychologists and users have all evaluated the application very positively as it covers disabled people's needs perfectly. 展开更多

This paper proposes an enhanced PSM that effectively dif-ferentiates multicast streams. It re-arranges the virtual bitmap of the traffic indication map (TIM) to carry traffic status for mul-ticast groups and introduces a concept of sequential transmission of multi-addressed data to facilitate differentiation among mul-ticast groups.
