The discrete element method (DEM) was used to simulate the flow characteristic and strength characteristic of the conditioned sands in the earth pressure balance (EPB) tunneling. In the laboratory the conditioned sands were reproduced and the slump test and the direct shear test of the conditioned sands were implemented. A DEM equivalent model that can simulate the macro mechanical characteristic of the conditioned sands was proposed, and the corresponding numerical models of the slump test and the shear test were established. By selecting proper DEM model parameters, the errors of the slump values between the simulation results and the test results are in the range of 10.3%-14.3%,and the error of the curves between the shear displacement and the shear stress calculated with the DEM simulation is 4.68%-16.5% compared with that of the laboratory direct shear test. This illustrates that the proposed DEM equivalent model can approximately simulate the mechanical characteristics of the conditioned sands, which provides the basis for further simulation of the interaction between the conditioned soil and the chamber pressure system of the EPB machine. 展开更多

The aim of this research was to find out whether the effect of chemical corrosion changes mechanical characteristics of surface layers of wooden construction elements. Degradation of the surface layers of wood was caused by chemical reactions of the basic substances of wood mass with compounds contained in antifire coatings. Fire retardants containing corrosive substances were often and repeatedly used in the Czech Republic on many wooden building constructions. This process of chemical corrosion is in practise called as "surface defibering of wood". This contribution presents standard and special experimental methods used for measuring the selected mechanical characteristics (compression strength, tension strength, bending strength, hardness and impact resistance) in the damaged surface layer of wooden construction elements. The material for experimental measuring was a construction element removed from a historical roof (ca 150 years old). Mechanical characteristics of the surface layer of the defibered element were compared with the values measured in the deeper subsurface layer of non-damaged wood. The results of the experiments proved loss of cohesive strength and decrease of mechanical characteristics of wood only in a thin surface layer. 展开更多

Steam-cured concrete is widely used to manufacture prefabricated units of high-speed railway foundation structure such as girder and track slab. The dynamic mechanical property of steam-cured concrete is one of the key properties affecting service performance of high-speed railway foundation structure. In the present paper, serial macro/micro-experiments were carried out to investigate the dynamic elastic modulus, shear modulus, damping ratio, and microstructure of steam-cured concrete. The relationships between compositions, curing regime, microstructure, and dynamic properties of steam-cured concrete as well as the corresponding mechanisms were discussed. The results indicate that steam-cured concrete in early age has a larger dynamic elastic modulus and shear modulus as well as a smaller damping ratio compared with standard-cured concrete. On the contrary,at a later age a slightly smaller dynamic elastic modulus and a larger damping ratio of steam-cured concrete are observed.Addition of mineral admixture results in a bit lower dynamic elastic modulus and damping ratio of concrete than that of the control specimen without mineral admixtures. The achievements can provide some fundamental suggestions for materials parameters selection during structural design of steam-cured concrete precast element. 展开更多

It is extremely important to study and understand the deformation behavior and strength characteristics of rocks under thermal-mechanical (TM) coupling effects. Failure behavior and strength characteristics of Pingdingshan sandstone were investigated at room temperatures up to 300℃ in an internally heated apparatus and tensile load through meso-scale laboratory experiments in this work. 33 experiments have successfully been conducted for Pingdingshan sandstone. Experimental results indicated that the tensile strength increased slowly with temperatures from 25℃ to 100℃, and then sharply jumped from 100℃ to 150℃, and finally decreased slightly with temperatures from 150℃ to 300℃. And about 150℃ is the threshold temperature of strength and thermal cracking. At low temperatures (25℃-150℃), sandstone strength is determined by relatively weak clay cement. However, at higher temperatures (150℃-300℃), because of the strength enhancement of clay cement, sandstone strength is controlled by both mineral particles and clay cement. The effects of cement clay, micro-cracks closing, and thermal cracking were the possible reasons for our detailed analysis. In addition, the typical fracture position maps and nominal stress-strain curves indicated that the temperature had strong effects on the failure mechanism of sandstone. The fractograph implied that the dominant fracture mechanism tended to transform from brittle at low temperatures to ductile at high temperatures. 展开更多
