Mechanized tunneling must adapt to the presence of sound and altered rock, as well as to inhomogeneous soil layers that range from permeable gravel to soft clay sediments along the same tunnel. This article focuses on past experiences with tunnel-boring machines (TBMs) in Switzerland, and specifically on the aspects of soil conditioning during a passage through inhomogeneous soft soils. Most tunnels in the past were drilled using the slurry mode (SM), in which the application of different additives was mainly limited to difficult zones of high permeability and stoppages for tool change and modification. For drillings with the less common earth pressure balanced mode (EPBM), continuous foam conditioning and the additional use of polymer and bentonite have proven to be successful. The use of conditioning additives led to new challenges during separation of the slurries (for SM) and disposal of the excavated soil (for EPBM). If the disposal of chemically treated soft soil mate- rial from the earth pressure balanced (EPB) drive in a manner that is compliant with environmental legislation is considered early on in the design and evaluation of the excavation mode, the EPBM can be beneficial for tunnels bored in glacial deposits.展开更多

For this study, we built a mechanical model for an end-anchorage bolt, which represented the effect of a bolt on the surrounding rock in roadways in order to obtain its elastic solution. Simultaneously, we analyzed factors affecting the axial compression of the bolt on the surrounding rock and obtained the axial stress contours of the anchorage area through this elastic solution. The results indicate that 1) the axial compression stress in the anchorage area is proportional to the pre-tightening force and confirms the rule that stress declines sharply with the increase in axial distance from the bolt, with an effective stress radius of 1 m; 2) the maximum axial compression stress declines first and then rises with the increase in depth from the surface of the anchorage surrounding rock and 3) the size of the axial compression area is mainly determined by the length of the bolt.展开更多

In the laboratory the conditioned sands were reproduced and the slump test and the direct shear test of the conditioned sands were implemented. A DEM equivalent model that can simulate the macro mechanical characteristic of the conditioned sands was proposed, and the corresponding numerical models of the slump test and the shear test were established. By selecting proper DEM model parameters, the errors of the slump values between the simulation results and the test results are in the range of 10.3%-14.3%,and the error of the curves between the shear displacement and the shear stress calculated with the DEM simulation is 4.68%-16.5% compared with that of the laboratory direct shear test. This illustrates that the proposed DEM equivalent model can approximately simulate the mechanical characteristics of the conditioned sands, which provides the basis for further simulation of the interaction between the conditioned soil and the chamber pressure system of the EPB machine.展开更多

Experimental results indicate that the electrical resistance of CFRC increases relatively by 24% within a hydration time of 90 d and almost keeps constant after 14 d, changes hardly with the mass loss of free evaporable water in the concrete dried at 50 °C, increases relatively by 4% when ambient temperature decreases from 15 °C to ?20 °C, and decreases relatively by 13% with temperature increasing by 88 °C. It is suggested that the electric resistance of the CFRC is stable, which is testified by the stable power output obtained by electrifying the CFRC slab with a given voltage. This implies that such kind of high content carbon fiber reinforced cement composite is potentially a desirable electrothermal material for airfield runways and road surfaces deicing.展开更多

The results indicate that during ventilation, the disturbed region of the temperature extends gradually from shallow area to deep area in the surrounding rock mass of the roadway. Meanwhile, the temperature increases as the exponential function from shallow area to deep, with steady decrease of the temperature gradient and heat flux. As the ventilation proceeds, the relationship between dimensionless temperature and dimensionless time approximately meets Hill function.展开更多

A theoretical model for measuring the neural signal by the silicon microelectrode is proposed based on the structure and fabrication process of a single-shank probe. The method of determining the dimensional parameters of the probe shank is discussed in the following three aspects, i.e. the structures of pallium and endocranium, coupled interconnecters noise, and strength characteristic of neural probe. The design criterion is to minimize the size of the neural probe as well as that the probe has enough stiffness to pierce the endocranium. The on-chip unity-gain bandpass amplifier has an overall gain of 42 dB over a bandwidth from 60 Hz to 10 kHz; and the DC-baseline stability circuit is of high input resistance above 30 MΩ to guarantee a cutoff frequency below 100 Hz. The circuit works in stimulating or recording modes. The conversion of the modes depends on the stimulating control signal.展开更多
