Effect of mechanical attrition on microstructure and property of electroplated Ni coating

Ni coating was deposited on carbon steel by a mechanical attrition enhanced electroplating (MAEE) process. During the electroplating, the mechanical attrition(MA) was introduced by impact of glass balls on the sample surface with a special vibrating frequency. The surface and cross-sectional images of Ni coating were observed with SEM. The microstructure and crystallinity of coating were examined with TEM and XRD. The electrochemical performance of coating was measured with polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and its mechanical behaviours, such as tensile strength and hardness, were studied. The results show that the MA has significant effects on the microstructure and property of the electroplated Ni coating. By MA, the coating becomes smooth, compact, thin and has refined grains and is free of cracks and pores. Consequently, the adhesion, tensile strength, hardness and corrosion resistance of coating are improved significantly. 展开更多

The corrosion, corrosive wear and dry sliding wear of nanocomposites, are extremely complicated and involve various chemical, physical anbd mechanical factors. The aim of this work is to investigate the effects of nanosized SiC content on the hardness, dry sliding wear, corrosion and corrosive wear of Al/SiC nanocomposites synthesized by mechanical milling cold pressing and hot extrusion. The corrosion resistance of these composites in 3%NaCl solution was investigated by electrochemical polarization testing and their dry sliding as well as corrosive wear resistance in the same solution was evaluated using a pin-on-disc tester. The microstructures of the samples and their worn surfaces were examined using scanning electron microscopy. It was shown that the dry sliding wear and corrosion resistance of these nanocomposites were improved with the increase of SiC content. It was concluded that due to the lubrication effect of the solution, both the friction coefficient and frictional heat that might soften the material were reduced. In addition, the improved strength of the nanocomposites combined with their better corrosion resistance contributed to their increased corrosive wear resistance, compared with the base alloy. The prominent wear mechanism in the unreinforced alloy was adhesive wear, in the Al/SiC nanocomposites, the wear mechanism changed to abrasive. 展开更多

The erosion-corrosion behavior of the materials tested changes with pH values and presents different change tendencies. The erosion-corrosion rates of the materials are increased with slurry velocities. The erosion-corrosion mechanisms for the steels and the coatings are considerably different. 展开更多

Spent fuel reprocessing plays a pivotal role in achieving efficient recycling of nuclear fuel.Among thedifferent forms of failure encountered in spent fuel reprocessing,tribocorrosion stands out as a critical concern.Herein,the tribocorrosion behavior,as well as the corrosion behavior,of 304L stainless steel(SS)in high-temperatureconcentrated nitric acid was investigated.The results indicated that 304L SS formed a thin(1.54 nm)and stable passivefilm on the surface,imparting high resistance to nitric acid corrosion.Meanwhile,it was found that the synergistic effectbetween corrosion and wear accounted for a high total tribocorrosion weight loss of over 85%,implying the dominantrole of the synergistic effect in the tribocorrosion process.Furthermore,the wear of 304L SS in deionized water revealedboth abrasive and adhesive wear characterizations,whereas the tribocorrosion in nitric acid only exhibited abrasive wearfeature.Eventually,the tribocorrosion and corrosion models of 304L SS in hot concentrated nitric acid were proposedbased on the comprehensive experimental findings. 展开更多

Ni-P-SiC_(P) coatings were deposited on 42CrMo steel by electroless plating.The surface morphologies and phase structures of the Ni-P-SiC_(P) coatings processed under different SiC_(P) concentrations at different heat treatment temperatures were analyzed.The microhardness,corrosion resistance,and wear resistance of the Ni-P-SiC_(P) coatings were studied.Results show that Ni-P-SiC_(P) coatings exhibit cauliflower-like morphology.Increasing the SiC_(P) concentration can reduce the size of cellular structure.The microhardness and corrosion resistance are initially increased and then decreased with the increase in SiC_(P) concentration.The maximum microhardness and corrosion potential are 7379 MPa and−0.363 V,respectively,when the SiC_(P) concentration is 5 g/L.The Ni-P-SiC_(P) coatings exhibit an amorphous structure,and the width of the diffuse diffraction peak becomes narrower with the increase in SiC_(P) concentration.It is suggested that SiC_(P) inhibits the deposition of P and promotes the microcrystalline transformation.After heat treatment at 350℃,the Ni-P-SiC_(P) coatings are crystallized,resulting in the precipitation of Ni3P phase.Heat treatment at 400℃ for 1 h maximizes the structure.The synergistic effect of the Ni3P precipitate phase and SiC_(P) dispersion phase promotes the densification of the cellular structure,leading to the optimal microhardness(13828 MPa),optimal corrosion resistance(−0.277 V),and excellent wear resistance.The wear mechanism is dominated by micro-cutting abrasive wear with slight adhesive and oxidative wear. 展开更多

The dorsal surface of a desert lizard has excellent particle erosion resistance.In this paper,a bio-inspired sample was designed and fabricated based on the biological characteristics of the dorsal skin of the desert lizard(Laudakin stoliczkana).The bionic sample consists of two materials with different characteristics,which form a two-layer composite structure.The particle erosion property and erosion wear mechanism of the bionic sample was studied by means of sandblast experiment and numerical simulation,respectively.The experimental results show that,in the stage with steady abrasion rate,the weight loss per unit time of the bionic sample is about 10%lesser than the control sample.The numerical simulation indicated that the two-layer structure of the bionic sample can efficiently absorb the normal stress,and dissipate the stress in the horizontal direction.Thus,the stress concentration on the sample surface is suppressed.The two-layer structure is contributed to the decentralizing of the stress distribution,and thus the occurrence probability of erosion damage can be decreased. 展开更多
