Standard addition method was applied for the calibration using aqueous solutions. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) absorb these metals at pH 8.0, HNO3 of 1.0 mol-Ll is used for complete elusion of these metals from MWNTs. Previously investigated parameters have been applied for the determination of Pb, Cr, Ni and Mn in tap water samples. Fifteen tap water samples from different locations of Riyadh metropolitan area have been determined by ICP-MS after preconcentration with MWNTs.展开更多

Under the optimized conditions, the calibration graphs were linear with the correlation coefficient range 0.9981-0.9995. According to the results, the metals were found 0.019-0.051, 0.011-0.031, 0.00-0.081, 0.00-0.0002, 0.007-0.0925, 0.00-0.0104 μg/L in water samples for Pb, Mn, Zn, Cd, Fe, Cu respectively. The percentage relative standard deviation (%RSD) for five replicate samples were 〈 5% in all cases. The method has been successfully applied to the determination of trace elements in some environmental samples with satisfactory results.展开更多

To understand plant invasions this study aims to test which of the two plant invasiveness hypotheses; ‘low native diversity' vs. ‘high native diversity', is supported by the regional distribution patterns of invasive plant species in the Himalayas,Nepal. This study is based on data retrieved from published literatures and herbarium specimens. The relationship between invasive plant species distribution patterns and that of native plant species is elucidated by scatter plots, as well as by generalized linear models. The native plant species and invasive plant species have similar distribution patterns and the maximum number of invasive plant species is found in the same altitudinal range where the highest richness for native tree species is found. There is a clear trend of higher invasive plant richness in regions where native tree species richness is relatively high.Consequently, the native plant richness is highest in the central phytogeographic region, followed by the eastern and the western regions, respectively. The invasive plant species also follows a similar trend.Additionally, the invasive plant species richness was positively correlated with anthropogenic factors such as human population density and the number of visiting tourists. This study supports the hypothesis that ‘high native diversity' supports or facilitates invasive plant species. Further, it indicates that nativeand invasive plant species may require similar natural conditions, but that the invasive plant species seem more dependent and influenced by anthropogenic disturbance factors.展开更多

Ten isolates were isolated from 150 specimens one of them from CSF and one isolate isolated from blood samples the others isolated from food specimens 6 isolates isolated from sausage and 2 from raw vegetables. Isolates were identified traditionally involved culture methods based on selective enrichment and plating followed by the characterization of Listeria spp. based on colony morphology, sugar fermentation and haemolytic properties, identification by Api listeria was done. Determine the isolates that produce biofilm by tissue culture plate method. The highest biofilm forming strains ofListeria monocytogenes isolates appear in No. (D10, El, E5 and E7) OD reading each of them is (0.13, 0.09, 0.11 and 0.19) respectively, the lowest or poor biofilm forming strains appear in No. (D11, D12, E2, E3, E4 and E6) that optical density (OD) reading are (0.04, 0.03, 0.05, 0.04, 0.05 and 0.03) respectively by comparing with control prepared in well (A12) that stained by crystal violate without putting any isolates and the OD reading is (0.003). Confirmation by PCR was done only for four isolates that produce biofilm (D10 and El) that obtained from CSF and blood sample and for (E5 and E7) that obtained from food samples.展开更多

These sediments were analyzed to determine the grain size, sediment texture and metallic trace elements. Lazer diffraction method using PSA (particle size analyzer) was used to determine the grain size and sediment texture. Teflon bomb was used to digest the sediments for metallic trace elements concentration. Results showed that the study area was dominated with sand particles (60.5%) followed by loamy sand (20.9%), sandy clay (16.3%) and silt loam (2.3%). On the other hand, the average concentrations of each metallic trace elements were 0.12 pg/g for Cd; 36.6 lag/g for Cr; 9.51 pg/g for Cu; 11.6 ~tg/g for N: 41.5 ~tg/g for Zn and 29.3/ag/g for Pb. Based on the results, it was found out that coarse sediments showed lower levels of metallic trace elements and higher levels in fine sediments. In addition, enrichment factor was calculated to assess the pollution status of the study area. Based on the calculation, the enrichment of metallic trace elements ranked in the following order: Pb 〉 Cd 〉 Zn 〉 Cu 〉 Ni 〉 Cr. The significant enrichment of Pb and moderate enrichment of Cd and Zn indicated that there are anthropogenic inputs while the rest of the metals can be considered from natural sources although there are effects of anthropogenic inputs in some sampling location.展开更多
