These germplasms were attributed as a Donor Gene Pool, consisting of 27 diverse morphological marker lines with each having a unique valuable trait (gene), and the recurrent parent-Zhefu 802, an early-season indica cultivar in south of China in the 1980s and 1990s. A set of 27 isogenic lines with 2-3 markers on every chromosome were obtained after more than 10 successive backcrosses. Moreover, 15 accessions of double-marker isogenic lines were developed by further pyramiding markers on the same chromosome. Key agronomic traits such as heading date, plant height, tillering number and panicle length in this set of lines were similar to that of Zhefu 802 except the marker traits.展开更多

In situ morphological characterization was undertaken using twenty five qualitative and six quantitative characters. Results revealed that a great majority of the qualitative traits were shared by both parents and their hybrids. For the rest, the qualitative traits were inherited from one or the other parent though some variant phenotypes (i.e. chimerism) were also noted in the hybrids. Cases ofheterosis were also observed and this could be exploited to increase fiber yield in the hybrids. Though inconclusive due to factors such as the heterogenous nature of abaca plants in the field and the susceptibility of morphological traits to environmental fluctuations, this study has provided baseline information on abaca hybridity that can be verified using more robust technologies as molecular markers.展开更多

However, traditional developing techniques have drawbacks such as low detection sensitivity, high background interference, complicated operation, and high toxicity. To tackle this challenge, we employed fluorescent NaYF4:Yb, Er upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), which can fluoresce visible light when excited by 980 nm human-safe near-infrared light, to stain the latent fingermarks on various substrate surfaces. The UCNPs were successfully used as a novel fluorescent label for the detection of latent fingermarks with high sensitivity, low background, high efficiency, and low toxicity on various substrates including non-infiltrating materials (glass, marble, aluminum alloy sheets, stainless steel sheets, aluminum foils, and plastic cards), semi-infiltrating materials (floor leathers, ceramic tiles, wood floor, and painted wood), and infiltrating materials such as various types of papers. This work shows that UCNPs are a versatile fluorescent label for the facile detection of fingermarks on virtually any material, enabling their practical applications in forensic sciences.展开更多
