To study the additional aerodynamic effect on a bridge girder under the action of wind-driven rain, the rainfall similarity considering raindrop impact and surface water is first given. Then, the dynamic characteristics and the process of vortex and flutter generation of the segment models under different rain intensities and angles of attack are tested by considering several typical main girder sections as examples. The test results indicate that the start and end wind speeds,interval length and number of vortex vibrations remain unchanged when it is raining, rainfall will reduce the windinduced vortex response. When test rain intensity is large, the decrease of amplitude is obvious. However, after considering the rain intensity similarity in this study, all of actual maximum rain intensities after conversion approach the domestic extreme rain intensity of approximately 709 mm/h. It can be observed that rainfall has a limited influence on the dynamic characteristics of the structure and vortex vibration response. When the test rain intensity is 120 mm/h, the critical wind speed of the model flutter increases by 20%-30%. However, after considering the rain intensity similarity ratio, the influence of rainfall on the wind-induced flutter instability of the bridge girder may be ignored. 展开更多

Based on the free vibration test method for extracting flutter derivatives,an experiment on flutter stability of a long-span bridge under simultaneous actions of wind and rain was carried out in a wind tunnel.A separated twin-box girder section model was employed as the specimen.The flutter derivatives and critical flutter wind speed of this girder subject to both wind and rain(with various rainfall intensities,wind speeds and attack angles)were obtained,then the flutter stability of the bridge influenced by rainfall was analyzed.Experimental results showed that the flutter derivatives of this bridge depend on the angles of attack of wind flow in the wind and rain fields.Also,rainfall has great effect on three flutter derivatives(H2*,H4* and A4*)and has less effect on other three flutter derivatives(H1*,H3* and A3*).With the increasing rainfall density,the critical flutter velocity first increases and then decreases.Low density of rainfall has the effect of increasing mass,stiffness and damping on bridge decks,and higher density of rainfall has the effect of random inhomogeneous impact on bridge decks. 展开更多

A novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) rain gauge is proposed in this paper to achieve high precision rainfall measurement. One core sensitive FBG, a temperature compensation FBG and a mechanical transition system construct this novel FBG rain gauge. Sensing principle of this FBG rain gauge is explained in detail, and its theoretical calculation model is also established, which shows that the relationship between center wavelength of sensitive FBG and external rainfall has very good linearity. To verify its detection performance, the calibration experiment on one prototype of this FBG rain gauge is carried out. After experiment data analysis, the detection precision of this FBG rain gauge is 15.4/.tm which is almost two orders of magnitude higher than that of the existing rainfall measurement device. The experimental data confirm that this FBG rain gauge can achieve rainfall measurement with high precision. 展开更多
