Taking steel balls for example, a new method based on reflected pattern integrity recognition is put forward. The specular steel ball surface will totally reflect the patterns when it is placed inside a dome-shaped light source, whose inner wall is modified by patterns with certain regular. Distortion or intermittence of reflected pattern will occur at the defective part, which indicates the pattern has lost its integrity. Based on the integrity analysis of reflected pattern images? surface defects can be revealed. In this paper, a set of concentric circles are used as the pattern and an image processing algorithm is customized to extract the surface defects. With the digital image technology,a crack detection method of reinforced concrete bridge was studied for the performance assessment.The effects including the image gray level,pixel rate,noise filter,and edge detection were analyzed considering cracks qualities.A computer program was developed by visual C++6.0 programming language to detect the cracks,which was tested by 15cases of bridge video images.The results indicate that the relative error is within 6%for cracks larger than 0.3 mm cracks and it is less than 10%for crack width between 0.2 mm and 0.3 mm.In addition,for the crack below 0.1 mm,the relative error is more than30%because the bridge is in safe stage and it is very difficult to detect the actual width of crack. 展开更多

Text embedded in images is one of many important cues for indexing and retrieval of images and videos. In the paper, we present a novel method of detecting text aligned either horizontally or vertically, in which a pyramid structure is used to represent an image and the features of the text are extracted using SUSAN edge detector. Text regions at each level of the pyramid are identified according to the autocorrelation analysis. New techniques are introduced to split the text regions into basic ones and merge them into text lines. By evaluating the method on a set of images, we obtain a very good performance of text detection. 展开更多

Inspired by eagle’s visual system,an eagle-vision-based object detection method for unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)formation in hazy weather is proposed in this paper.To restore the hazy image,the values of atmospheric light and transmission are estimated on the basis of the signal processing mechanism of ON and OFF channels in eagle’s retina.Local features of the dehazed image are calculated according to the color antagonism mechanism and contrast sensitivity function of eagle’s visual system.A center-surround operation is performed to simulate the response of reception field.The final saliency map is generated by the Random Forest algorithm.Experimental results verify that the proposed method is capable to detect UAVs in hazy image and has superior performance over traditional methods. 展开更多

Visual inspection of the key components of nuclear power plants(NPPs)is important for NPP operation and maintenance. However,the underwater environment and existing radiation will lead to image degradation,thus making it difficult to identify surface defects. In this study,a method for improving the quality of underwater images is proposed.By analyzing the degradation characteristics of underwater detection image,the image enhancement technology is used to improve the color richness of the image,and then the improved dark channel prior(DCP)algorithm is used to restore it. By modifying the estimation formula of transmittance and background light,the correction of insufficient brightness in DCP restored image is realized. The proposed method is compared with other state-of-the-art methods. The results show that the proposed method can achieve higher scores and improve the image quality by correcting the color and restoring local details,thus effectively enhancing the reliability of visual inspection of NPPs. 展开更多

In the proposed system for online inspection of steel balls, a diffuse illumination is developed to enhance defect appearances and produce high quality images. To fully view the entire sphere, a novel unfolding method is put forward based on geometrical analysis, which only requires one-dimensional movement of the balls and a pair of cameras to capture images from different directions. Moreover, a realtime inspection algorithm is customized to improve both accuracy and efficiency. The precision and recall of the sample set were 87.7% and 98%, respectively. The average time cost on image processing and analysis for a steel ball was 47 ms, and the total time cost was less than 200 ms plus the cost of image acquisition and balls' movement. The system can sort 18 000 balls per hour with a spatial resolution higher than 0.01 mm. 展开更多

For the realtime classification of moving vehicles in the multi-lane traffic video sequences, a length-based method is proposed. To extract the moving regions of interest, the difference image between the updated background and current frame is obtained by using background subtraction, and then an edge-based shadow removal algorithm is implemented. Moreover, a tbresholding segmentation method for the region detection of moving vehicle based on lo- cation search is developed. At the estimation stage, a registration line is set up in the detection area, then the vehicle length is estimated with the horizontal projection technique as soon as the vehicle leaves the registration line. Lastly, the vehicle is classified according to its length and the classification threshold. The proposed method is different from traditional methods that require complex camera calibrations. It calculates the pixel-based vehicle length by using uncalibrated traffic video sequences at lower computational cost. Furthermore, only one registration line is set up, which has high flexibility. Experimental results of three traffic video sequences show that the classification accuracies for the large and small vehicles are 97.1% and 96.7% respectively, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method. 展开更多
