A generalized complex eigenvalue problem generated from the linearized set of the three-dimensional governing system equations around the basic Couette azimuthal solution are solved numerically with the Chebyshev spectral method. In a wide range of radius ratios and the magnitudes of counter rotating, critical bifurcation thresholds from the axisymmetric Couette flow to the flow with different azimuthal wave numbers are obtained. The complex dispersion relations of the linearized stability equation system for vortex patterns with different azimuthal wave number are calculated for real axial wave numbers for axially extended vortex structures.展开更多

A method to fast predict instability separation modes is proposed for DSR calculation in power injection space. The method identifies coherent generation groups by the developed K-medoids algorithm, taking a similarity matrix derived from the reachability Grammian as the index. As an experimental result, reachability Grammian matrices under local injections are approximately invariant. It indicates that the generator coherency identifications are nearly consistent for different injections. Then instability separation modes can be predicted at the normal operating point, while average initial acceleration is considered as the measure of the critical generator group to amend the error. Moreover, based on these predicted instability separation modes, a critical point search strategy for DSR calculation is illustrated in the reduced injection space of the critical generators. The proposed method was evaluated using New England Test System, and the computation accuracy and speed in determining the practical DSR were improved.展开更多

Recent experimental evidence shows that prey cannibalism can have a significant impact on predator-prey population dyna- mics in natural communities. Motivated by these experimental results, we investigate a ratio-dependent Holling-Tanner model, where cannibalism occurs simultaneously in both the predator and prey species. We show that depending on parameters, whilst prey or predator cannibalism acting alone leads to instability, their joint effect can actually stabilize the unstable interior equilibrium. Furthermore, in the spatially explicit model, we find that depending on parameters, prey and predator cannibalism acting jointly can cause spatial patterns to form, while not so acting individually. We discuss ecologicalconsequences of these findings in light of food chain dynamics, invasive species control and climate change.展开更多

Traditional methods for avoiding mode mixing in identical coupled nonlinear electrical lines consist of adding the same number of linear inductors in each branch. Adding linear inductors in a single line leads to asymmetric coupled nonlinear electrical transmission lines which propagate the signal and the mode mixing. On one hand, the difference between the two lines induced the fission for only one mode of propagation. This fission is influenced by the amplitude of the signal and the amount of the input energy as well; it also narrows the width of the input pulse soliton, leading to a possible increasing of the bit rate. On the other hand, the dissymmetry of the two lines converts the network into a good amplifier for the ω_ mode which corresponds to the regime admitting low frequencies.展开更多
