The impeller configuration (a hollow half elliptical blade dispersing turbine below two up-pumping wide blade hydrofoils, identified as HEDT+2WHu) recommended in previous work has been used in this work. The operating temperatures were 24℃ and 81℃, identified as cold and hot respectively. The effects of superficial gas velocity, agitator speed and the corresponding power input on the local void fraction in two-phase systems are .investigated and discussed. Results show thatth-e increasing of agitator speed or gas flow rate leads to an increase in local-void fraction at the majority of measurement points in both cold and hot systems. However, the unifo, rmity of gas dispersion does not always in crease as the raising of agitator speed and power input. In either cold or hot sparged conditions, the two- and three-phase systems.have similar vertical profiles for void fraction, with maxima in similar locations; however, the void fractions are significantly lower in hot sparging than with cold. In cold operation the presence of particles leads to a lower void fraction at most points, although the local void fractions increase a little with the addition of solid particles at high temperature, in good agreement with the global gas holdup results, and the possible reasons are discussed in this paper. This work can give a better understanding of the differences between cold-gassed and hot-sparged three phase'stirred tanks.展开更多

The turbulent flow field and mixing time were calculated using LES with Sma-gorinsky-Lilly subgrid scale model. The impeller rotation was modeled using the sliding mesh technique. Better agree-ment of power demand and mixing time was obtained between the experimental and the LES prediction than that by the traditional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach. The curve of tracer response predicted by LES was in good agreement with the experimental. The results show that LES is a reliable tool to investigate the unsteady and quasi-periodic behavior of the turbulent flow in stirred tanks.展开更多

And the characteristics were compared with those of background noise received from a real hydraulic turbine unit. It is found that the AE parameters such as the energy and duration can qualitatively describe the fatigue state of the blades. The correlations of crack propagation rates and acoustic emission count rates vs stress intensity factor (SIF) range are also obtained. At the same time, for the specimens of 20SiMn under the given testing conditions, it is noted that the rise time and duration of events emitted from the fatigue process are lower than those from the background noise; amplitude range is 49-74 dB, which is lower than that of the noise (90-99 dB); frequency range of main energy of crack signals is higher than 60 kHz while that in the noise is lower than 55 kHz. Thus, it is possible to extract the useful crack signals from the noise through appropriate signal processing methods and to represent the crack status of blade materials by AE parameters. As a result, it is feasible to monitor the safety of runners using AE technique.展开更多

It is about a blade discretized by the finite element method (FEM) in order to determine the gyroscopic effect during its rotation at a high speed. A blade must have the maximum output and resist to aerodynamic loads distributed over its length, which are related to its geometrical characteristics and the speed of the wind. For that, the authors wrote the relations whom determine these loads according to the flow speed of the wind, then, the authors integrated them in the laws of structure mechanics to obtain the motion equations of the blade. This process was applied to a twisted blade with a length of 1.9 m, built out of pressed aluminum sheet with a profile of the type NACA; this profile gives the best aerodynamic output. This blade is an element of a three-bladed propeller for wind turbine of maximum power 5 kW. Finally, we visualized its deformations and then the authors checked its holding in service.展开更多

Based on SIMPLEC algorithm, time-averaged N-S equation and the standard k-e turbulence model, the numerical results are obtained. The pressure distribution in the different type impellers is uniform, while the low pressure area in straight-blade inlet is larger. The vortexes in the passage of impeller exist in both cases. Relative to curved-blade impeller, there are larger vortexes in most of the flow passages except the passage near the tongue in straight-blade impeller. Also some small backflow regions are found at the blade inlet of two impellers. The characteristic curves achieved by numerical simulation basieaUy agree with those by experiment, and straight-blade open impeller centrifugal pump has a better hydraulic performance.展开更多

The pump turbine usually works at operating conditions where the guide vanes experience strong vibrations. However, most traditional studies were carried out based on constant GVO(guide vane opening) simulations. In this work, dynamic analysis on pressure fluctuation in the vaneless region of a pump turbine model was conducted using a dynamic mesh method in turbine mode. 3D unsteady simulations were conducted where GVO was closed and opened by 1° from the initial 18°. Detailed time domain and frequency domain characteristics on pressure fluctuation in the vaneless region under different guide vane rotational states compared with constant GVO simulations were investigated. Results show that, during the guide vanes oscillating process, the low and intermediate frequency components in the vaneless region are significantly different. The amplitudes of pressure fluctuation are higher than those with constant GVO simulations, which agree better with the experimental data. In addition, the pressure fluctuation increases when GVO is opened, and vice versa. It can be concluded that pressure fluctuation in the vaneless region is strongly influenced by the oscillating of the guide vanes.展开更多

In this paper, a systematic method was developed to design, characterize and optimize a particular mechanical minipump. The optimization work was conducted to cope with the conflict between pressure head and hydraulic efficiency by an improved back-propagation neural network (BPNN) with the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II). The improved BPNN was utilized to predicate hydraulic performance and, moreover, was modified to improve the prediction accuracy. The NSGA-II was processed for minipump multi-objective optimization which is dominated by four impeller dimensions. During hydraulic optimization, the processing feasibility was also taken into consideration. Experiments were conducted to validate the above optimization methods. It was proved that the optimized minipump was improved by about 24 % in pressure head and 4.75 % in hydraulic efficiency compared to the original designed prototype. Meanwhile, the sensitivity test was used to analyze the influence of the four impeller dimensions. It was found that the blade outlet angle β2 and the impeller inlet diameter Do significantly influence the pressure head H and the hydraulic efficiency η, respec- tively. Detailed internal flow fields showed that the optimum model can relieve the impeller wake and improve both the pressure distribution and flow orientation.展开更多

The efficiency-flow curves and the characteristic curves were obtained for the pump for various operation conditions. The experiment results demonstrated that the pre-whirl regulation widened the high efficiency zone and improved the hydraulic performance for off-design conditions with the proper pre-whirl angle. The axial distance between the inlet guide vanes and the impeller inlet influenced the pre-whirl regulation effect of the inlet guide vanes with the best pre-whirl regulation effect obtained for an axial distance of 380 mm. These results showed that an appropriate axial distance between the inlet guide vanes and the impeller inlet can improve the fluid flow at the impeller entrance with pre-whirl regulation for centrifugal pumps.展开更多
