Valuable mineral resources are widely distributed throughout the seabed. autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are preferable to remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs) when probing for such mineral resources as the extensi...Valuable mineral resources are widely distributed throughout the seabed. autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are preferable to remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs) when probing for such mineral resources as the extensive exploration area makes it difficult to maintain contact with operators. AUVs depend on batteries, so their power consumption should be reduced to extend exploration time. Power for conventional marine instrument systems is incorporated in their waterproof sealing. External intermittent control of this power source until termination of exploration is challenging due to limitations imposed by the underwater environment. Thus, the AUV must have a power control system that can improve performance and maximize use of battery capacity. The authors developed such a power control system with a three-step algorithm. It automatically detects underwater operational states and can limit power, effectively decreasing power consumption by about 15%.展开更多

This paper describes the structural design and construction of the oscillating water column "greenWAVE Energy Converter" which was constructed during 2013 and was planned to be deployed in shallow water off the South Australian coast in 2014. Rated initially at 1 MW, the greenWAVE unit will be dedicated to electricity production, although an option is available to produce desalinated seawater. The unit base is constructed from reinforced concrete designed to international maritime codes, and the unit will be founded in approximately 10-15 m of water. The upper portion of the device extends above sea level, housing the airwave turbine and electrical control systems.展开更多
A power system with proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) was designed for thermal underwater glider.Heat generated by PEMFC is used as the propulsion power of the glider,and the electricity is used in the contr...A power system with proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) was designed for thermal underwater glider.Heat generated by PEMFC is used as the propulsion power of the glider,and the electricity is used in the control and sensor system.An electric energy storage system (ESS) is required which possesses high power density with good cycle life.Ultracapacitors which exhibit high power density and cycle life are considered as energy storage devices.Simulations based on a specific voyage condition indicate that ESS with ultracapacitors has positive effects on reducing the output power demand of PEMFC and lightening the power system.Experimental results show that the state of charge (SOC) is related to the capacitance and resistance in ultracapacitor ESS.展开更多
