The study on human exposure to air pollutants provides an important basis for the nuprorement of human health effects. The questionnaire about time activity patterns includes questions about time spent in the houses, personal activities, indoor combustion sources, information about hobbies, (e.g. smoking), home repairing and decorating materials, and personal product use and so on. The questionnaire was conducted with 662 respondents over 16 years of age in Tianjin, China from fall 1995 to summer 1996. The results of the investigation show that 84% of people′s activities happen indoors, and 58% in family. The field researches of air pollutants monitoring of the most important air pollutants either indoors or outdoors, including carbon monoxide (CO), formaldehyde (HCHO), inhaled particulate (IR), and Benzpyrene(Bap), were carried out in winter and summer from 1995 to 1996. The results of the study on human exposure to four selected air pollutants show that indoor sources and their air pollution cause relatively high exposure in the total air pollution exposures. For example, only the exposure indoors at home is 71.0%,60.3%, 69.4% and 74.0% respectively for CO, HCHO, IR and Bap in the total air pollution exposure.展开更多

Three levels of Rayleigh number(5.8×1010, 1.0×1012 and 2.1×1012) and two values of source contaminant flux(5 mg/s and 50 mg/s) were considered. The inlet Reynolds numbers were 2×104, 5×104, 1.5×105 and 4.5×105 for DV and 5×105, 1×106, 2×106 and 4×106 for PV, respectively. From the results, it is concluded that the above parameters have very complex impacts on the conjugated heat and mass transports. From points of view of acceptable indoor air quality and ventilation efficiency, PV at Re=1×106 with side-located sources and 65% of the supply air extracted through floor level outlets is the best choice when Ra=5.8×1010. However, DVs at Re=5×104 and Re=1.5×105with center-located sources and floor-mounted air suppliers are the best choices for Ra=1.0×1012 and Ra=2.1×1012, respectively. When source contaminant flux reaches 50 mg/s, local extraction as a supplement of general ventilation is recommended. The results can be a first approximation to 3D numerical investigation and preliminary ventilation system design guidelines for high-rise industrial halls.展开更多

According to emission factors of local air pollutants and GHG of coal-fired power industry in different hydropower service regions, we estimate the effect and synergy of local air pollutants and GHG reduction achieved by hydropower development in Tibet, examine the main factors constraining the effect and synergy, using correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. The results show that: 1) During the period from 2006 to 2012, the effect of local air pollutants and GHG reduction achieved by hydropower development in Tibet decreased as a whole, while the synergy increased first and decreased afterwards. 2) The effect and synergy of local air pollutants and GHG reduction achieved by hydropower development in Tibet vary significantly across different hydropower service regions. The effect based on emission levels of Central China power grid(CCPG) and Northwest China power grid(NCPG) was more significant than that based on emission level of national power grid(NPG) from 2006 to 2012, and the synergy based on emission levels of CCPG and NCPG was also more significant than that based on emission level of NPG from 2010 to 2012. 3) The main factors constraining the effect and synergy based on emission levels of NCPG and CCPG included SO2 removal rate and NOx removal rate, the effect and synergy based on emission level of NPG was mainly influenced by net coal consumption rate. 4) Transferring hydropower from Tibet to NCPG and CCPG, and substituting local coal-fired power with hydropower can greatly help to co-control local air pollutants and GHG, transform the emission reduction pattern of the power industry and optimize energy structure.展开更多

These factors are not considered by the Spanish technical building code since ventilation is set only by a fixed air change rate. This paper aims to explore the possibilities of DCVS (demand controlled ventilation systems) to ensure adequate and sustainable ventilation. It is based on a research project carried out by the University of the Basque Country (EHU-UPV) and Euskadi Public Housing and Soil Join-Stock Company (VISESA): the living rooms of 90 dwellings were provided with DCVS, where CO2 sensors were used to dynamically control the ventilation rate. Tests were carried out using tracer gas techniques, with results showing the air age to be adequate at every point of the occupied zones and free of stagnant areas, therefore proving the system's effectiveness and rapid response, and its energy savings.展开更多

The degree of signification varies in dependence on pollution character and its sources. Buildings eliminate significantly people exposition of outdoor pollutants, but on the other hand, buildings are significant source of indoor pollution. The contamination of indoor air is largely from the use of gas for heating and cooking appliances. A comprehensive analysis of indoor air pollution by nitrogen oxides shows that the extent of indoor air pollution and consequent exposure varies as a result of many factors mainly the differing dislribution of appliances and their level of use. This study aims to formulate a mathematical model for the production of nitrogen oxides indoors. The physical processes that determine the concentrations of indoor nitrogen oxides as a function of outdoor concentrations, indoor emission rates and building characteristics have been mathematically described. The mathematical model developed has been parameterized for typical Slovak residences. The modeling of the occurrence of indoor nitrogen oxides and verification of the model is presented in this paper.展开更多

The lung is the most common site of injury by airborne pollutants. Acute effects, however, may also include non-respiratory signs and symptoms, which may depend upon toxicological characteristics of the substances and host-related factors. The studying of indoor air quality can provide a method for appropriate remedial action. Research suggests that SHD (Settled House Dust) may be a significant source for indoor exposure to different substances. This research study consisted of sampling dust from homes in different area codes. The dust samples were collected from August 2006 thru March 2007 and analyzed using GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry). The purpose of this research study will display how sampling household dust is a powerful tool for identifying chemicals that contribute to poor indoor air quality.展开更多

In this scenario, the analysis of these three elements has gained the increasing attention globally in research, business and policy spheres. This paper aims to provide an analysis of the perspectives of this nexus for Brazil and the United States, using current and predicted scenario for 2050. Considering the importance of renewable sources of energy to overcome these challenges and diversify the energy matrix in both countries, the paper will also present the biogas potential for both countries, which provides multiple economic, environmental and social benefits, such as electrical, thermal and vehicular energy, high-quality biofertilizer, reduction of odor and pathogenic vectors in the farms, decrease of ground and surface water pollution, promotion of new income for the farmers, reduction of the greenhouse gases emissions, among others.展开更多

Air pollutants and greenhouse gases are closely linked via their common source, fossil fuels. As a result of globalization, large portions of these emissions are associated with trade. This study uses data from the World Input-Output Database(WIOD), including 27 EU countries and 13 major countries, covering the period from 2000 to 2009, and applies MRIO(Multiregional input-output) to estimate emissions embodied in China's international trade. We focus on the synergy between LAPs(local air pollutants) and GHG consumption-based emissions, and the relationship between virtual LAPs and virtual GHGs associated with China's international trade from 2000 to 2009. The results indicate that a strong synergistic relationship exists and that air pollutant control can serve as an endogenous mechanism to mitigating greenhouse gases. Thanks to domestic actions to control air pollutants, every ton reduction of LAP emissions related to export can save 27.1 tons of GHG emissions in 2005 over emissions efficiency levels, and can save 32.4 tons of GHG emissions in 2009 over 2005. Mitigation actions taken to reduce air pollutants could also reduce GHG emissions.展开更多
