The experiments were realized in batch reactor and the isotherms were modelized by the Fowler-Guggenheim equation. During the adsorption process weak zeolite-sorbate interactions and more significant sorbate-sorbate attractions were identified. The adsorption was not linked to the molecular size of the sorbates and a strong correlation was established between the adsorption compound was the best adsorbed. The removal performances capacities and the dipole moments of the sorbates. The most polar of the zeolites depended on their hydrophobicity.展开更多

Atmospheric stability plays the most important role in the dispersion of air pollutants. The focus of attention in the present study is the estimation of the degree of stability of the atmosphere for the north coast of Egypt to evaluate the ability of the atmosphere to disperse pollutants. A FORTRAN program (Appendix 1) is presented to determine atmospheric stability using the Pasquill-Tunner Method PTM, which defines the turbulent state of the atmosphere and also reflects upon the dispersion capabilities of the atmosphere at the site. This method used several meteorological factors such as wind speed, insulation, cloud cover height and type. Meteorological data from Matrouh stations in Egypt is applied for a simulated model. The total patterns of stability classification, both monthly and seasonal patterns, are determined, also the stability-wind rose and stability-wind summary are provided. Finally prediction of Iodine surface air concentration is reported as well as the annual effective dose for I- 131 as a case study.展开更多

The TCP-CPE was examined with the main objective of using it for the differential pulse voltammetric analysis of some neonicotinoid insecticides in aqueous Britton-Robinson buffer solution pH 7.0 as supporting electrolyte. After comparing the performance of the TCP-CPE with that of silicone oil carbon paste electrode, quantitative analysis of imidacloprid, thiamethoxam and clothianidin was performed in model solutions and real samples (river water and commercial insecticide formulations). The in situ prepared BiF-TCP-CPE was tested for a simultaneous detection of selected heavy metal ions (Cd^2+ and Pb^2+) at a μg/dm^3 concentration level, using square wave anodic stripping voltammetric technique. The influence of different electrochemical pretreatments of the working electrode on the bismuth deposition and analyte signals were investigated. Film formation was studied at untreated, pre-cathodized and pre-anodized TCP-CPEs in the acetic buffer solution pH 4.6, containing 1 μg/cm^3 Bi (III).展开更多

There is an extensive literature on laboratory behavioral assays, with many chemicals impairing feeding or predator avoidance. However, there is not extensive work on fishes that live in contami- nated environments. Therefore, we then review our recent research on feeding and trophic relations of populations from contami- nated estuaries compared with relatively unpolluted sites. The mummichog Fundulus heteroclitus, is a non-migratory fish; those from more contaminated areas are poor predators and slower to capture active prey (grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio). In the field, they consume much detritus and sediment, which is not nutritious. They are less active than fish from cleaner sites and more vulnerable to predation. They have altered thyroid glands and neurotransmitter levels, which may underlie altered behaviors Fish from the reference site kept in tanks with sediment and food from the polluted site showed bioaccumulation and reduced prey capture after two months, although fish from the polluted site did not show significant improvement when maintained in a clean environment. Poor nutrition and predator avoidance may be responsible for their being smaller and having a shorter life span than reference fish. Bluefish Pomatomus saltatrix, are a marine species in which the young-of-the-year spend their first summer in es- tuaries. We found bioaccumulation of contaminants and reduced activity, schooling, and feeding in young-of-the-year bluefish from a relatively unpolluted site that were fed prey fish from a contaminated site. They also had altered thyroid glands and neuro- transmitter levels. Many field-caught specimens had empty stomachs, which is rare in this species. In the fall, when they migrate back out to the ocean, they are smaller, slower, and more likely to starve or to be eaten than those that spent their summer in cleaner estuaries [Current Zoology 58 (1): 9-20, 2012].展开更多
