This is due to moving loads and climate conditions. If the observed deformations exceed the elastic limit, important damages can occur, so new materials are used to improve the stiffness modulus of bituminous mixtures. To achieve this, a modified bituminous concrete by addition of the PR PLAST Sahara (produced by PR industries and PLAST for Plastic) mainly used in arid region has been studied. The use of this additive at various percentages 0.1, 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 by weight of bituminous concrete has been investigated to determine its stiffness modulus. An experimental design using the Taguchi tables has been elaborated to reduce the number of tests. Marshall and NAT (Nottingham asphalt tester) tests have been carried out, and a mathematical model of the stiffness modulus has been proposed. 展开更多

In this paper, in order to investigate the viscoelasticity of asphalt binder at the softening point temperature, more than 30 different asphalt binders were selected and tested by dynamic rheological scan method using a dynamic shear rheometer(DSR). The softening points and the rheological parameters of the asphalt samples were measured and analyzed. The results indicated that at the softening point temperature the neat asphalt and the SBS modified asphalt showed two different rheological states. The neat asphalt binders had a majority of viscous components in viscoelastic composition, with the phase angles being mostly higher than 80 o. The SBS modified binders had lower phase angles, with their elasticity still retained. Meanwhile, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test showed that at a confidence level of 0.05, at whatever aging state, the neat asphalt had a stable complex modulus corresponding to the softening point, which was 13.034 kPa at a standard deviation of 2.105 kPa under the same test condition. The softening point of neat asphalt binder can be calculated via the equivalent modulus rule. It is found out that there is a good relationship between the calculated and the measured softening points. And it is suggested that more data are needed to validate this finding. 展开更多

The density of asphalt was measured with the pycnometer and densitometer. Creep properties of the asphalt were investigated with the bending beam rheometer at temperatures ranging from 0 ~C to -36 ~C. The asphalt density data used to correlate with the creep properties were calculated from the regression equation of density and temperature. The asphalt sample used to determine the creep property was aged by the standard RTFOT test and the PAV test. The test results showed that the asphalt density had a linear relationship with temperature changes. The logarithm of the creep stiffness and the slope of the logarithm of the stiffness at 60 seconds all demonstrated a linear relationship with the density, and the regression coefficient of these data was around 0.99. The creep stiffness and the slope of the creep stiffness can be calculated from the asphalt density at the same temperature. 展开更多

Using heptane, toluene, and tetrahydrofuran (THF) as eluant, asphaltenes were fractionated into five fractions based on their polarity and solubility. The molecular composition of polar heteroatom species in both asphaltene and its fractions were ana- lyzed by negative-ion electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI FT-ICR MS). The application of UV-vis spectrometer in characterizing asphaltene composition and measuring asphaltene concentration was discussed. About 11.9 wt% asphaltene components adsorbed permanently on silica gel in the extrography column after exces- sive elution with various solvents. In negative FT-ICR MS, the mass spectra show that acidic and neutral nitrogen-containing compounds such as N1 and NIS1 mainly existe in the first three less polar fractions, while oxygen-containing compounds such as 02, O2S, O2S2, 03, and 04 show high relative abundance in more polar fractions. These results suggest oxygen-containing compounds have stronger adsorption ability with silica gel. It was observed that the double bond equivalence (DBE) distribu- tion of N1 class species in the fractions shifted to higher values while the carbon number shifted to smaller numbers as polarity of fractions increased. This indicates that acidic and neutral Nl compounds with longer carbon chain and less aromaticity have less polarity compared with those with shorter carbon chain and stronger aromaticity. UV-vis absorbance indicats that fractions containing the most aromatic and most polar asphaltene have better absorbance at long wavelength, while the fractions that consist of least aromatic and least polar asphatlenes show high absorbance at short wavelength. 展开更多
