Relative pronoun in the acquisition of English relative clauses by Chinese EFL learners

The paper focuses on the properties of relative pronouns in the acquisition of relative clause by Chinese EFL learners. Based on the NPAH （noun phrase accessibility hierarchy）, comparison and contrast of some aspects of English and Chinese relative pronoun, the paper conducts two experiments, and has proved the hypotheses that students＇ performance generally follows the hierarchy of NPAH and students do have problems with relative pronoun involving prepositions. Besides, some pedagogical implications for foreign language teaching are discussed.

This paper deals with the main characteristics of the heroine in Tke Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne. She was firm and kind-hearted. She was punished severely for adultery. However, she endured all miseries and insults bravely, and fostered her daughter alone. Meanwhile, she helped others without any resentment or desire for repayment. Being isolated and outlawed, she got more acute than the others, and became contemplative gradually, speculating on some serious and complex problems. The particular circumstances mainly created her from a common woman to be an important one who had multi-tudinous characteristics. In fact, the sin she had committed was not unforgivable. She was punished severely just because she had defied the Puritan, whose society was filled with cruelty and deceit. Furthermore, Hester＇s unsatisfaction with the life, Dimmesdale＇s weakness and hypocrisy, and the isolation by the society were all the reasons of creating those characteristics. Finally, Hester dominated over her own identity, and thus, became an example for others.

The application of communicative approaches in language teaching

English is widely taught and used in China. Yet, Traditional Language Teaching （TLT） methods are still used in most classrooms, which hinder the successful language learning. In the paper, communicative approach is introduced. And the authors sincerely hope that effective language learning can be promoted in the language classroom.

A new strategy of integrating American culture with English teaching ＆ learning by using VOA Special English feature programs

The paper mainly studies a new way of combining American culture with English language teaching and learning by means of the VOA Special English feature programs. It is based on a 5-year period of teaching practice, experience and reflection. This interactive, innovative, productive and student-centered approach is a far cry from the rigid, old, unproductive and teacher-centered approach of teaching British and American culture without combining language learning and practice as is commonly used here in Chinese colleges. The author also throws some light on how to use on-line teaching resources and how to cultivate independent learning on the part of the students he has worked with.

To what extent should grammar be taught for the students of English majors in China？

The purpose of this paper is to show the importance of grammar teaching for the students of English majors in China and to provide an integrated teaching method for the teachers of English in China and colleagues in similar situations outside of China, through the analysis of the nature and role of grammar, of the importance of form depending upon the students＇ and instructional variables, and of using texts communicatively, in English teaching.

Differential effects of teaching approaches on Chinese EFL learners of different writing abilities

To the issue on the superiority and inferiority of the ＂product approach＂ and the ＂process approach＂ writing teaching, an empirical study research of I00 non-English major students has been accomplished to testify the relationship between these different approaches and the different writing levels. The results are the ＂product approach＂ is more helpful to the learners with lower writing level; whereas, the ＂process approach＂ is more effective to ones with higher level. Furthermore, the teaching approach itself cannot affirm the superiority and inferiority, and it would not be at work unless is applied for corresponding learners.

Writing review articles as means to develop ESP writing skills

The present paper summarizes the current learning and teaching of ESP in higher medical education in China and suggests that some writing programs may help students of medical major writer better. Considering the multi-disciplinary characteristics of the class, the author has focused the writing lessons on review articles and received satisfactory outcomes.

The Application of Task-Based Language Teaching to ＂Longman English Interactive＂

Interactive courses are becoming more and more popular today. LEI （Longman English Interactive） is one of them Recently, many teachers in China's Mainland learn to adopt TBLT （task-based language teaching） in these interactive courses including LEI. However, some of them feel confused about how to apply TBLT more effectively in their classes since they may not understand clearly why TBLT is such a ＂matching＂ teaching method for this type of classes. To illustrate this issue, this paper sets LEI as an example. It firstly analyzes the syllabus design of LEI based on the theories of communicative teaching approach, then discusses about why the renowned TBLT is a suitable method to organize the class, and finally exemplifies how TBLT can be fully applied to the course in real classrooms. The objective of this paper is to inspire English teachers to have a better application of TBLT in interactive classes alike.

For the international rule of law, basic research needs to be carried about such social surroundings as where the rules are produced and applied and exerting influences. The research method of the sociology of law exactly hits the point. The application of empirical and experimental research methods offers a beforehand ＂rehearsal＂ chance for the process of the rule of law to grasp the pros and cons in the planning andpractice of the rule of law. The cooperation between the research methods of social science and the traditional research method of international law can reasonably interpret the phenomena of international relations and promote the international rule of law.
