But the communicative approach conforms to historical trends, focusing on students and developing their overall language ability to handle changes and solve problems. Proceeding from the tortuous course of teaching reform on English, analyzing theories of foreign language approaches and characteristics of communicative approach and researching into its strategies, the author aims to study how to spur teaching reform on college English towards great success.展开更多

The findings in this study provide insights into the use of non-verbal behavior in providing students with corrective feedback. This study shows that research dealing only with verbal corrections provided by FL teachers cannot fully define the classroom interaction in terms of teachers' use of error correction techniques and student notification and uptake.展开更多

The thesis holds that explicit grammar instruction plays a very important role in foreign language learning and teaching and argues that English education in China should lay emphasis on how to assist students' grammar internalization and promote the conversion from explicit learning to implicit learning.展开更多

To date, many Learner Autonomy training programs have been carried out in foreign language teaching. Cooperative Learning (CL) is a language teaching and learning strategy which gets learners actively and cooperatively involved in learning a foreign language in groups. Both of them have been respectively advocated from pedagogical point of view and from the perspective of philosophy. However, being autonomous does not necessarily mean learning alone. Language learners should learn cooperatively and autonomously. It is the author's contention that CL is a good method to promote LA. CL has positive effects on both students' readiness and their ability to be more autonomous. CL enhances self-esteem and self-confidence, increases high motivation, encourages learners' responsibility for learning, enhances self-management skills, increases support for language learners to move from interdependence to independence. The paper stresses in the end that promoting LA is the teacher's long-term pedagogic goal.展开更多

This article will review the explicit grammar instruction and implicit grammar teaching research, collect and analyze the integration of explicit grammar instruction and implicit grammar teaching strategy and its advantages in the grammar teaching.展开更多

The participants in this study were 32 intermediate senior students of Shiraz Azad University majoring in English translation. The Word Associates Test (WAT) (Read, 1993) was used to measure their depth of vocabulary knowledge and lexical inferencing strategy questionnaire which was part of Schmitt (1997), vocabulary learning strategies as well as a reading passage (Haastrup, 1999), cited in Nassaji (2004), were used to determine their lexical inferencing strategy use and success. Results indicate that: (1) Those who have stronger depth of vocabulary knowledge use certain strategies more frequently than those who have weaker depth of vocabulary knowledge; (2) The students with stronger depth of vocabulary knowledge make more effective use of certain types of lexical inferencing strategies. These findings support the importance of depth dimension of vocabulary knowledge and the role it plays in guessing the meaning of unknown words.展开更多

EST is concerned with meeting the specific language needs of learners in various scientific and technological fields. These needs should be taken into consideration when planning and implementing English language courses or specialized courses to students of science and technology. This research is an attempt to investigate some of the problems involved in the teaching and learning of EST and suggest possible solutions. The research will focus on the reading comprehension of scientific and technical texts written in English, the teaching and learning of functional grammar, and the teaching and learning of lexis. These are regarded as some of the most important skills and sub-skills to be acquired by the students of science and technology to help them gain scientific information in English and reach a satisfactory level of achievement in their academic studies. The contention here is that it is in need to adopt a new set of assumptions and criteria specifically relevant to EST instead of employing those of General-English courses being used in the foundation and non-foundation years. This is in line with the basic premise of ESP (English for Special Purpose) and foundation courses which are supposed to prepare students for longer and more difficult tasks in their relevant fields of study. It is hoped that the findings of this research paper will be fruitful and relevant to other ESP courses in addition to those of EST.展开更多

Among these, the learner himself or herself is the most direct and important. This passage emphasizes the point of English educational psychology and from it we can see that the motivation factor, ability factor and intellect factor affect the students' English learning most. Girls' internal motivation is stronger than boys' in the foreign language studying and most of the girls aim at gaining English knowledge. The process of English learning itself can make them contented and basically they will not be interrupted by the external factors.展开更多

Teaching strategies of literature instruction encouraged peer collaboration and constructing meaning with other students prior to class, in class and after class. Various activities, such as group discussion on guided questions, presentation of reading diary and peer correction of reflection poems were applied to enhance students' learning interests. Four intact advanced-level classes of 162 freshmen participated in the study. They answered a questionnaire and took an English proficiency pre/post test. Descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Scheffe post-Hoc test, independent t-test and a paired t-test were used to analyze data. Results showed literature instruction effectively promoted students' English skills and their awareness of cultural differences. Watching the adaptation of the novel on DVD before they read the book helped students' comprehension. Finally, there was a significant improvement in both students' reading and listening exam grades. Future studies may consider looking for participants from different levels of English proficiency and extending the instruction time from one semester to two semesters.展开更多

With Bhatia's (1990) model as the framework, three other move patterns were obtained besides the normal move order. The density of modal verbs varies greatly from move to move with significant differences in the frequency of occurrence in different moves. The use of modal verbs is much more move-determined than discipline-determined.展开更多

It covers the two conventional dimensions of vocabulary knowledge: The breadth and depth. The recent wok on the breadth of vocabulary knowledge extends beyond the old fashion of rigid word counting of learners at various proficiency levels. Meanwhile, multi-dimensional study is also witnessed when it comes to the research into the depth of lexical knoweldge, the developmental and dimensional perspective, along with psycholinguistic account of the incremental nature of the acquisition process.展开更多
