The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) and the immersed boundary method (IBM) are alternative, com- putational techniques for solving complex fluid dynamics systems, and can take the place of the Navier-Stokes(N- S)...The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) and the immersed boundary method (IBM) are alternative, com- putational techniques for solving complex fluid dynamics systems, and can take the place of the Navier-Stokes(N- S) equation. This paper proposes a novel immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method (IB-LBM) based on the feedback law. The method uses the immersed boundary concept in the LBM framework to capture the coupling between a body with complex geometry and a uniform fluid, Then, the flows around a stationary circular cylinder and two circular cylinders in a side by side arrangement are simulated by using the method. Results are agreed well with the benchmark data, so, the capability of the method for complex geometry is demonstrated. Different from the conventional IB-LBM, which uses the Hook's law or the direct forcing method to compute the interae- tion force, the method uses the feedback law--the feedback of velocity field and displacement information to calculate the force, thus ensuring the method has advantages of easy implementation and full parallelism.展开更多

Critiquing the essentialist view that...This paper investigates how the Arab-American writer Naomi Nye addresses the dialectic between borders and multiculturalism in her award-winning young adult novel Habibi (1997). Critiquing the essentialist view that presumes fixed boundaries for a culture, Nye promotes the alternative view that assumes individuals' power of defining and redefining their cultural identities in a multicultural society. The author argues that Nye's position is that borders/boundaries and geographical demarcations are flimsy, arbitrary and create divisions, animosities and hatred between people and nations whereas multiculturalism engenders feelings of reconciliation, friendship, and understanding. Though borders and boundaries can be divisive, cultural variety and hybridity can be inclusive. To counteract the argument of borders/boundaries, Nye posits the argument of multiculturalism. In this paper, the author intends to examine the assumptions of the physical and the cultural borders rhetoric in comparison with the multicultural approach narrative. Complex absorbing potential is usually required in a time-dependent wave packet method to accomplish the calculation in a truncated region.Usually it works effectively but becomes inefficient when the wave function in...Complex absorbing potential is usually required in a time-dependent wave packet method to accomplish the calculation in a truncated region.Usually it works effectively but becomes inefficient when the wave function involves translational energy of broad range,particularly involving ultra-low energy.In this work,a new transparent boundary condition(TBC)is proposed for the time-dependent wave packet method.It in principle is of spectral accuracy when typical discrete variable representations are applied.The prominent merit of the new TBC is that its accuracy is insensitive to the translational energy distribution of the wave function,in contrast with the complex absorbing potential.Application of the new TBC is given to one-dimensional particle wave packet scatterings from a barrier with a potential well,which supports resonances states.展开更多
The authors analyzed requirements for a new deepwater platform, from conceptual design to hydrodynamic analysis.The design incorporated Deep Draft Multi-Spar (DDMS) that allowed easy fabrication, reduced costs, and pr...The authors analyzed requirements for a new deepwater platform, from conceptual design to hydrodynamic analysis.The design incorporated Deep Draft Multi-Spar (DDMS) that allowed easy fabrication, reduced costs, and provided favorable motion performance.It also provided a dry tree system and other benefits.The conceptual design process included dimension estimation, general arrangements, weight estimation, weight distribution, stability analysis, etc.A high order boundary element method based on potential theory and the modified Morison equation was used to predict the hydrodynamic and viscous effects of this new concept platform.The response amplitude operators (RAOs) were acquired and compared with those of a typical Truss Spar.The response of the platform to the JONSWAP spectra of 3 different extreme ocean conditions was analyzed to evaluate the seakeeping ability of the new concept.The results revealed favorable motion performance due to all the degrees of freedom available.展开更多
This paper analyzes the stability of milling with variable pitch cutter and tool runout cases characterized by multiple delays,and proposes a new variable-step numerical integration method for efficient and accurate s...This paper analyzes the stability of milling with variable pitch cutter and tool runout cases characterized by multiple delays,and proposes a new variable-step numerical integration method for efficient and accurate stability prediction. The variable-step technique is emphasized here to expand the numerical integration method,especially for the low radial immersion cases with multiple delays. First,the calculation accuracy of the numerical integration method is discussed and the variable-step algorithm is developed for milling stability prediction for single-delay and multiple-delay cases,respectively. The milling stability with variable pitch cutter is analyzed and the result is compared with those predicted with the frequency domain method and the improved full-discretization method. The influence of the runout effect on the stability boundary is investigated by the presented method. The numerical simulation shows that the cutter runout effect increases the stability boundary,and the increasing stability limit is verified by the milling chatter experimental results in the previous research. The numerical and experiment results verify the validity of the proposed method.展开更多
