The aim of the present work is to remove heavy metals (copper, manganese, and zinc) from industrial wastewater of Baiji refinery using GAC (granular activated carbon). The most important factors affecting adsorption process have been studied, which are granular activated carbon thickness, H, inlet pollutant concentration, Cv, and liquid hourly space velocity, LHSV. All experiments were performed under constant temperature at 25℃ and pH = 7. The experimental apparatus was designed and constructed to enable controlling of the operating conditions. Employing five levels for each of H and LHSV and three levels for Co required 75 runs for each metal. Box-Wilson method was used to reduce the number of experiments to 15 for each metal. The results indicated that copper, manganese, and zinc can be completely removed from wastewater using activated carbon. However, breakthrough time for zinc is low. It is also shown that breakthrough time (TB) and exhaustion time (TE) are inversely proportional with pollutant concentration and LHSV (liquid hour space velocity) while it is directly proportional with the thickness of activated carbon column. 展开更多

Bleaching with oxygen-containing agents and recirculation of process streams in the pulp and paper industry has increased the accumulation of oxalic acid and danger for precipitation of calcium oxalate encrusts, scaling. Analysis and control of oxalic acid in bleaching filtrates is therefore becoming increasingly important in the pulp and paper industry. Chromatographic methods, such as IC and HPLC, are generally more time-consuming but are valuable as standard methods for determination of oxalic acid. However, the instrumentation needed is expensive and stationary. In this study, an enzymatic method based on oxalate oxidase and peroxidase was developed to determine oxalic acid in authentic bleaching filtrates using a spectrophotometer. The results showed that bleaching filtrates contain some compounds interfering with the enzymatic method. Pretreatment of the samples with activated charcoal was a successful approach for decreasing problems with interference. By using dilution followed by charcoal treatment, the results obtained from five bleaching filtrates with the colorimetric method correlated very well with those obtained using IC. This study offers a selective, fast and mobile analysis method to determine oxalic acid in bleaching fiRrates from the pulp and paper industry, The convenient enzyme-based method improves the possibilities for control of critical oxalic acid concentrations in closed-loop bleaching streams. 展开更多

Due to the high cost of adsorbents and their thermal regeneration in recent years, much research has fo- cused on the search for cheaper adsorbents for treating wastewater from textile industry. The single component ad-sorption of an acidic dye, Acid Yellow 117, and a basic dye, Methylene Blue, onto several adsoroents-bamooo, waste wood, bamboo char, waste wood char, bamboo activated carbon, wood activated carbon and active carbon F400 were conducted. Based on a Langmuir analysis, the monolayer adsorption capacities were determined. Three of the adsorbents were selected for binary layer adsorption to check the multilayer concept and the potential application for better adsorbent usage. The two cheapest adsorbents, bamboo and wood are compared with the commer-cial activated carbon F400, and all three systems were successful. 展开更多

The adsorption of xenon from air has an interest in the monitoring of nuclear explosion or accident, or in the treatment of nuclear waste gas. In this paper, the pore structure of several series of activated carbon fibers has been characterized. The adsorption properties of xenon on these activated carbon fibers under different temperatures have been studied in details. The results show that the xenon adsorption amount on activated carbon fibers do not increase with specific surface area of adsorbents, but are closely related to their pore size distribution. Pores whose radius equal to or narrow than 0.4nm would be more advantageous to the adsorption of xenon. 展开更多
