Friction stir welding provides better retention of ductility and plasticity in comparison to fusion welding and it increases the stability against cracking.This study aims to enhance both the ductility and strength of...Friction stir welding provides better retention of ductility and plasticity in comparison to fusion welding and it increases the stability against cracking.This study aims to enhance both the ductility and strength of the welded joints.Tool profile was found to play an important role in retaining ductility,understanding the metal flow behavior and determining the fracture initiating point.The microstructure of different regions in the onion ring was inferred to correlate the strength with the metal flow pattern.The onion ring pattern strengthened the weld nugget.Shoulder and taper threaded profile tool resulted in superior mechanical properties.Microhardness results confirmed that the fracture runs through low hardness areas such as heat affected zone and thermo-mechanically affected zone.The scanning electron microscopic images revealed elongated grains and dimples,justifying ductile mode of fracture.展开更多

The characteristic quantities such as the second invariant of ...To reduce defects caused by non-homogeneous metal flow in conventional extrusion,a die with guiding angle was designed to improve the metal flow behavior. The characteristic quantities such as the second invariant of the deviator stress J2 and Lode's coefficient μ were employed for the division of deformation area. The results show that when the metal is extruded with the guiding angle,no metal flow interface forms at the container's bottom,the dead zone completely disappears,the deformation types of the metal in the plastic deformation area change from three types to one type of tension,and the homogeneity of the deformation as well as metal flow are greatly improved. The non-homogeneous metal flow at the final stage of extrusion is improved,reducing the shrinkage hole at the axis end. The radial stress of the furthest point from the axis is transformed from tensile stress to compressive stress and the axial stress,and decreased from 70.8 to 34.8 MPa. Therefore,the surface cracks caused by additional stress are greatly reduced.展开更多

Defect-free weld was obtained when aluminum and m...Material flow and phase transformation were studied at the interface of dissimilar joint between Al 6013 and Mg, produced by stir friction welding (FSW) experiments. Defect-free weld was obtained when aluminum and magnesium were placed in the advancing side and retreating side respectively and the tool was placed 1 mm off the weld centerline into the aluminum side. In order to understand the material flow during FSW, steel shots were implanted as indexes into the welding path. After welding, using X-ray images, secondary positions of the steel shots were evaluated. It was revealed that steel shots implanted in advancing side were penetrated from the advancing side into the retreating side, whereas the shots implanted in the retreating side remained in the retreating side, without penetrating into the advancing side. The welded specimens were also heat treated. The effects of heat treatment on the mechanical properties of the welds and the formation of new intermetallic layers were investigated. Two intermetallic compounds, Al3Mg2 and Al12Mg17, were formed sequentially at Al6013/Mg interface.展开更多
We have calculated the longitudinal acoustic phonon limited electron mobility of 14 twvo-dimensional semiconductors with composition of MX2, where M (= Mo, W, Sn, Hf, Zr and Pt) is the transition metal, and X is S, ...We have calculated the longitudinal acoustic phonon limited electron mobility of 14 twvo-dimensional semiconductors with composition of MX2, where M (= Mo, W, Sn, Hf, Zr and Pt) is the transition metal, and X is S, Se and Te. We treated the scattering matrix by the deformation potential approximation. We found that out of 14 compounds, MoTe2, HfSe2 and ZrSe2 are promising regarding to their possible high mobility and finite band gap. The phonon limited mobility can be above 2,500 cm^2·V^-1·s^-1 at room temperature.展开更多
Effects of wall properties and slip condition on the peristaltic flow of an incompressible pseudoplastic fluid in a curved channel are studied. Series solution of the governing problem is obtained after applying long ...Effects of wall properties and slip condition on the peristaltic flow of an incompressible pseudoplastic fluid in a curved channel are studied. Series solution of the governing problem is obtained after applying long wavelength and low Reynolds number approximations. The results are validated with the numerical solutions through the built-in routine for solving nonlinear boundary value problems via software Mathematica. The variations of different parameters on axial velocity are carefully analyzed. Behaviors of embedding parameters on the dimensionless stream function are also discussed. It is noted that the axial velocity and size of trapped bolus increases with an increase in slip parameter. It is also observed that the profiles of axial velocity are not symmetric about the central line of the curved channel which is different from the case of planar channel.展开更多
