According to their influencing factors and reciprocity mechanism, using system dynamics approaches, this paper built a SD model for measuring the carrying capacity of resources and environment of the city clusters in the central China, and through setting different development models, the comprehensive measurement analysis on the carrying capacity was carried out. The results show that the model of promoting socio-economic development under the protection of resources and environment is the optimal model for promoting the harmony development of resources, environment, society and economy in the city clusters. According to this model, the optimum population scale of the city clusters in 2020 is 42.80×106 persons, and the moderate economic development scale is 22.055×1012 yuan (RMB). In 1996-2020, the carrying capacity of resources and environment in the city clusters took on obvious phase-change characteristics. During the studied period, it is basically at the initial development stage, and will come through the development process from slow development to speedup development.展开更多

Adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) introduced fundamental changes in accounting and impairment methods for goodwill. Since global stock markets went into decline in 2008, there has been much debate over the issue of goodwill impairment in the US and European stock exchange markets, especially on how large the write-downs should be. Complexity of International Accounting Standards (IAS) and IFRS focusing on goodwill and goodwill impairment techniques may lead to inconsistent compliance and varying levels of disclosure quality. The aim of this study is to analyze goodwill impairment during and after the recent financial crisis for companies listed on the Borsa Istanbul (BIST) 100 index and to assist the financial statement users in the assessment of disclosure quality under IAS 36, Paragraph 134d. Tools such as: (1) the period over which management has projected cash flows; (2) the growth rate used for cash flow projections; (3) the discount rate(s) applied to projections; and (4) methods employed to determine recoverable amount are analyzed. Insufficient disclosures on these tools are observed. The findings are of interest to researchers examining the implication of IAS 36, regulators, and policy-setters.展开更多

Level 3 fair value measurements are inappropriate for areas (called "Level 4" by the author) in which models are not formulated and that have material uncertainty in measurement. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate "measurement uncertainty", which impacts "faithful representation" in fair value measurement, from the perspective of "verifiability". To do so, it will employ a conceptual examination of the limits of Level 3 fair value measurement based on IFRS 13 (Fair Value Measurement). While taking into consideration recent discussions on reviewing conceptual framework, the author will reorganize the conceptual categories of verifiability (i.e., clarification of the "reasonable verifiability" categories) to underpin the fact that material uncertainties in measurement have obstructed constructing faithful representation. In addition, the author will discuss the problem that the dichotomy of direct and indirect found in IASB is not accurate enough to fully understand the concept of verifiability. In this context, the author will also suggest that the concept of verifiability, reorganized through "reasonable verifiability", can satisfy the requirements for constructing faithful representation.展开更多

This means that for inferential statistic of the sample, the value of the sampled units rather than the sample design is important. Sampling rare populations presents distinct challenges. Examples of rare populations are in biology with rare and endangered animals where there are only a few remaining individuals, or in social science, with the low incidence of people from an unusually high (or low) income group. Sampling rare populations tends to result in the case that many of the sample units do not contain information on the characteristic of interest (e.g., the rare animal, or people from the unusual income group). For finite rare populations the set of unordered distinct rare-units in a sample is a minimally sufficient statistic. In an example case study of a rare buttercup, the properties of the minimal sufficient estimator are explored. We compare the efficiency of the estimator for the population total based on the minimally sufficient statistic, with the standard estimator for a range of sample sizes. The variance of the minimally sufficient estimator was always smaller than the variance of the sufficient estimator. For rare populations where non-rare units can be distinguished from rare units because they have the same fixed value, the minimal sufficient statistic is the rare units, if any, in the sample.展开更多

The purpose of this paper is to study performance measurement according to the changes in public sector reform by focusing on performance-based budgeting in Russia. This paper suggests that the construction process of performance measurement should be aligned with outputs and outcomes of budget policy. The main research materials for this paper are based on data from a survey and follow-up interviews of budgetary managers and accountants. The survey result sets priorities and weighted some indicators to the measurement of effectiveness in the public sector. The data of this study were not large, but the study led to understanding how effectiveness is seen by budgetary managers and how measurement systems should be structured. Texts and contents from different sources such as financial annual reports and budgetary entities' websites provided insightful and interesting findings.展开更多

Many studies developed measure(s) of intellectual capital of industrial and service firms. Few studies have tried to develop a reliable measure of intellectual capital in audit firms. This study extends the current models to provide more insight into the role of intellectual capital in audit firms. The aim of this study is to develop a quantitative model to measure audit firms' intellectual capital. The suggested model can be used to explore the relationship between the intellectual capital in audit firms and audit quality. The model combines the main components of intellectual capital (human capital, structural capital, and relational capital). The suggested model provides a tool that may help to better manage the intellectual capital in audit firms. As this is a theoretical study, a number of hypotheses are presented for testing in the future.展开更多

Unlike most existing approaches where this is typically formulated as a regression problem or a time-series prediction problem, we take a different formulation to this problem by noting that these existing approaches fail to consider the potential relationships both among the consumers (consumer influence) and among the shops (competitions or collaborations). Taking this observation into consideration, we propose a new method for e-commerce business model mining and prediction, called EBMM, which combines regression with community analysis. The challenge is that the links in the network are typically not directly observed, which is addressed by applying information diffusion theory through the consumer-shop network. Extensive evaluations using Alibaba Group e-commerce data demonstrate the promise and superiority of EBMM to the state-of-the-art methods in terms of business model mining and prediction.展开更多

Male Atlantic molly Poecilia mexicana exhibit weaker mating preferences when an audience male is presented. This could be a male strategy to reduce sperm competition risk: interacting more equally with different females may be advantageous because ri- vals might copy mate choice decisions. In line with this hypothesis, a previous study found males to show a strong audience effect when being observed while exercising mate choice, but not when the rival was presented only before the choice tests. Audience effects on mate choice decisions have been quantified in poeciliid fishes using association preference designs, but it remains un- known if patterns found from measuring association times translate into actual mating behavior. Thus, we created five audience treatments simulating different forms of perceived sperm competition risk and determined focal males' mating preferences by scoring pre-mating (nipping) and mating behavior (gonopodial thrusting). Nipping did not reflect the pattern that was found when association preferences were measured, while a very similar pattern was uncovered in thrusting behavior. The strongest response was observed when the audience could eavesdrop on the focal male's behavior. A reduction in the strength of focal males' preferences was also seen after the rival male had an opportunity to mate with the focal male's preferred mate. In comparison, the reduction of mating preferences in response to an audience was greater when measuring association times than actual mating behavior. While measuring direct sexual interactions between the focal male and both slimulus females not only the male's motivational state is reflected but also females' behavior such as avoidance of male sexual harassment [Current Zoology 58 (1): 84-94, 2012].展开更多
