Field measurements are conducted to validate the turbulence model and acquire boundary conditions. The simulation result tallies with testing data on the sport that is found that two-equation turbulence model is acceptable in simulating complex flow at the station. A method of simplifying the simulation of the transient flow at the station into steady flow is used and the validation criterion for this simulation is also given.展开更多

In addition to sediment biomarkers, field measured and remote sensing data of phytoplankton abundance were also recorded from Prydz Bay, Eastern Antarctica. Com-munity structure of field measured phytoplankton showed significant El Ni?o/La Ni?a-related succession during 1990 to 2002. In general, the number of algae species decreased during El Ni?o and La Ni?a years compared to normal years. Austral summer monthly variation of remotely sensed chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), particulate organic carbon (POC), and sea surface temperature (SST) indicated that ENSO impacted the timing of phytoplankton blooms during 2007 to 2011. Phytoplankton blooms (indicated by Chl-a and POC) preceded the increases in SST during El Ni?o years, and lagged behind the SST increases during La Ni?a years. Stratigraphic record of marine sedimentary lipid (brassicasterol, dinosterol and alkenones) biomarkers inferred that the proportions of different algae (diatoms, dinoflagellates and haptophytes) changed significantly between El Ni?o and La Ni?a events. The relative proportion of diatoms increased, with that of dinoflagellates being decreased during El Ni?o years, while it was reversed during La Ni?a years.展开更多

To study these effects at local scale, a radiation station was set up, which used two CM21 Kipp & Zonen pyranometers (one inverted), and two CG1 Kipp & Zonen pyrgeometers (one inverted) in Logan, Utah, USA. The pyranometers and pyrgeometers were ventilated using four CV2 Kipp & Zonen ventilation systems. Ventilation of pyranometers and pyrgeometers prevent dew, frost and snow accumulation, which otherwise would disturb the measurement. Knowing that available energy (Rn) as Rn = Rsi - Rso + Rli - Rio where Rsi and Rso are downward and upward solar radiation, respectively, and Rli and Rio as atmospheric and terrestrial, respectively, the effects of cloudiness were evaluated on a daily and annual basis. The results indicate that for the partly cloudy days of 4 and 5 September, 2007, cloudiness caused less available energy (Rn) in the amounts of-1.83 MJ·m^-2·d^-1 and -3.83 MJ·m^-2·d^-1 on these days, respectively. As shown, due to cloudiness at the experimental site, the net radiation loss was 2,804 - 4,055 = -1,251 MJ·m^-2·d^-1, which indicates a negative feedback due to cloudiness.展开更多
