Suspended particulate matter (SPM) collected in the Changjiang (Yangtze River) estuary in June 2006 was separated into five fractions via water elutriation: clay-very fme silt (〈8 μm), fine silt (8-16 μm), medium silt (16--32 μm), coarse silt (32~53 μm) and sand (〉63 μm). The SPM and fractionated particles were sequentially analyzed by a modified SEDEX sequential extraction method to obtain six species of phosphorus: exchangeable or loosely-sorbed P, organic P, Fe-bound P, authigenic P, detrital P and refractory P. The results indicated that all particulate phosphorus species except for detrital P were negatively correlated to particle size; a high detrital P content was found in coarse silt and very coarse silt. From the inside of the river mouth to the gate of the fiver mouth, organic P, Fe-bound P and refractory P in the suspended particles decreased and a higher amount of exchangeable P appeared around the gate of the fiver mouth. From the gate of the river mouth to the sea, exchangeable P and organic P in suspended panicles increased distinctly. The total particulate P flux into the estuary from the Changjiang River was about 45.45×10^8μmol/s during sampling. Of this, about 8.27×10^8μmol/s was associated with the "truly suspended" fraction. The bio-available particulate P flux was about 13.58×10^8μmol/s. Of this, about 4.24 ×10^8μmol/s w as transported by "truly suspended" particles. 展开更多

Although remote sensing data have been used to estimate total suspended matter (TSM) in coastal waters, it has limitations when applied to estuary waters in low spatial resolution situations. The spatial resolution of ocean color satellites such as SeaWiFS and MODIS is usually -1 km, and therefore is not adequate for small, local-scale areas such as the Zhujiang (Pearl) River estuary. In contrast, 30 m-resolution EO-1 Hyperion imagery has potential for studying TSM in localized areas. We measured the surface spectral radiance reflectance of the river estuary water in the visible and near infra-red spectral range. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the ratio of remote sensing reflectance at 813 nm (Rrs(813)) to reflectance at 559 nm (Rrs(559)) could be used to estimate TSM concentration, and a linear relationship was established between the ratio and in-situ TSM concentration. We applied the linear relationship to Hyperion imagery to map TSM concentration in the estuary. The Hyperion imagery provided sufficient spatial resolution to detect spatiotemporal changes in TSM concentrations in the estuary small estuary area. Based on the principle of conservative matter removal in estuary,a new method is proposed for estimating the ratio of sediment resuspension in estuaries with fine suspended sediments in the turbidity maximum zone(TMZ) of the Changjiang(Yangtze) estuary during 2005.Results show that there was a range of 18.7%±27.9% to 73.9%±22.5% per annum of total suspended particulate matter(SPM),with an average of 49.2%.Nearly half of the particulate matter in the TMZ originates from sediment resuspension.This indicates that sediment resuspension is one of the major mechanisms involved in formation of the TMZ.Compared with traditional method for calculating these ratios in the estuary,this new method evaluates the dynamic variation of SPM content carried by river runoff from the river mouth to the ocean.The new method produced more reliable results than the traditional one and could produce a better estimation of resuspension flux for particulate matter in estuaries. 展开更多

The vertical fluxes and molar ratios of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus of suspended particulate matter in the Yellow Sea were studied based on the analysis of suspended particulate matter, sediments and sinking particles obtained by use of moored sediment traps. The POC:PON ratios indicate that most of the particulate organic matter in the Yellow Sea water column comes from marine life rather than the continent. The vertical fluxes of SPM, POC, PON and POP in the Yellow Sea are much higher than those in other seas over the world, and present a typical pattern in shallow epicontinental seas. The estimated residence time of the bioactive elements showed that the speed of the biogeochemical process of materials in the Yellow Sea is much shorter than that in the open ocean as there was high primary productivity in this region. 展开更多

An Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) observation site was set up in the Western South Yellow Sea from 2012 to 2013 to study the local suspended particle matters (SPM) distribution pattern. The SPM concentration could be semi-quantitatively represented by backscatter intensity (Sv), converted by the echo intensity (E/) of ADCP. Results show two types of SPM in the water column: the quasi-biological SPM and quasi-mineral SPM. The quasi-biological SPM mainly exists in summer half year and is con- centrated above the thermocline. It has periodically diurnal variations with high concentration at night and low concentration in the daytime. The quasi-mineral SPM is located in lower part of the water column, with similar relation to monthly tidal current variation all year round. However, the daily quasi-mineral SPM distribution patterns vary between summer and winter half year. The sunlight is thought to be the origin factor leading to the diurnally vertical motion of the biological features, which might cause the diurnal Sv variation. Unlike in winter half year when tidal current is relatively single driving force of the monthly SPM pattern, the high speed current near the thermocline is also responsible for the concentration of quasi-mineral SPM in summer half year. The sediment input difference between summer and winter half year contribute to the varied daily variation of quasi-mineral SPM with re-suspended SPM ir~ winter and sediments from Yellow Sea Mud Area (YSMA) in summer. The seasonal variations in hydrodynamics, water structure and heavy-wind incidents are the primary factors influencing the differential seasonal SPM distribution patterns. 展开更多

This paper presents the results of application of a 3D (three-dimensional) numerical model to study on MTZ (maximum turbidity zone) in the coastal zone of Mekong River Delta. In this study, a 3D system model with combination of hydrodynamics--wave and suspended sediment transport was set up and validated with measured data in the study area. Based on calculated scenarios for the flood and the dry season, the results have shown appearance of MTZs in the coastal zone of Mekong River with suspended sediment concentration prevalent of 0.04-0.07 kg·m^3 (the dry season) and 0.05-0.1kg·m^3 (the flood season). The position and MTZs scale change with the interaction between fresh water and tidal oscillations. The MTZ occur more in the dry seasons compared to the wet season. The MTZs are prevalent located far away from estuaries about in 12-22 km (in the dry season), and 5-15 km in the flood season. 展开更多

Using net enclosures in an earthen pond, we established three culture treatments with the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus and the Chinese white shrimp Fenneropenaeus chinensis : monoculture of sea cucumbers(C), monoculture of shrimp(S), and co-culture of the two species(CS). We measured levels of suspended particulate matter in the water column; total organic matter, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and carbon/nitrogen ratios in both settling particles and the sediment; and chlorophyll a levels in the sediment. We then compared these variables between the three treatments. We also examined growth, survival, and yield of the two species in the different treatments. From June to September, the mean monthly suspended particulate matter sedimentation rates in the CS and S treatments were significantly( P <0.05) greater than those in the C treatment. From August to November, the mean monthly total organic matter, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and chlorophyll a contents in the sediment in the CS and S treatments were significantly( P <0.05) greater than those in the C treatment. Final wet weight, specific growth rate, survival rate, and total yield of sea cucumbers in co-culture were all significantly greater than those of sea cucumbers in monoculture. There were no significant differences among any of these variables for shrimp reared in the two systems. The bioturbation of the sediment and fecal production of the shrimp likely supplied natural food for the sea cucumbers. Co-culture of the two species is a viable option for increasing yield per unit area, maximizing use of the water body, and diversifying crop production. 展开更多

Characteristics of interaction between di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate(DEHP) and particulate in a eutrophic lake were studied in this paper. DEHP concentrations ranged from 89.9 to 247 μg/L with an average value of 146 μg/L in subsurface water (SSW) samples, and from 82.0 to 390 μg/L with an average value of 211 μg/L in water surface microlayer (SM) samples. The results indicate that there was only a weak correlation between the DEHP concentrations and suspended particulate material(SPM) concentrations in both SSW and SM, while the significant correlation between DEHP concentrations and chlorophyll a concentrations was found, which suggestes that DEHP was principally bound to phytoplankton in the eutrophic lake. Correlation between DEHP concentrations and total phosphor (TP) concentrations was also found in this investigation.Enrichment factors (EF) of DEHP in SM were in the range of 0.85 to 2.12 with an average value of 1.35. DEHP EFs were significantly related to the enrichment of chlorophyll a in SM. The results suggest that the enrichment of DEHP in SM of this eutrophic lake was mainly due to DEHP accumulation in phytoplankton and was controlled by distribution of phytoplankton between SM and SSW. 展开更多

The time scale of transport and reaction processes in the ocean can be evaluated using natural radionuclides of different half-lives.In the present study,we evaluated the residence times of particulate reactive radionuclides 7 Be,210 Pb xs and 234 Th in the Changjiang (Yangtze River) estuary,which is a high turbidity estuary,in June,2006.The residence times of particulate 7 Be,234 Th xs and 210 Pb xs in the Changjiang estuary were calculated to be 0.7-20.4,0.18-4.1 and 0.6-89.8 d,respectively.The obtained residence times of those nuclides are comparable with those of other estuaries and bays.For 234 Th xs and 7 Be,the residence times decreased with increasing concentrations of suspended particulate matter (SPM);however,those of 210 Pb xs increased.Moreover,scavenging residence times of 234 Th and 7 Be increased from coast to offshore,while those of 210 Pb xs decreased. 展开更多

Retention efficiencies (RE) of scallop (Chlamys farreri),oyster (Crassostrea gigas) and mussel (Mytilus edulis) in a flow-through system were measured to understand the short-term response to various particle and organic matter concentrations.By comparing the RE of C.farreri with that of C.gigas and M.edulis,we gained further knowledge on the feeding physiological characteristics of C.farreri and ascertained the possible cause of high summer mortalities of this species.The experimental feeding conditions included natural differences in the abundance and composition of suspended seston,as well as conditions in which seston abundance and composition were manipulated by adding natural silt or cultured microalgae.The results show that in natural sea water,the minimum particle size for maximal retention in M.edulis,C.gigas and C.farreri was approximately 4,6,and 8 μm,respectively;the RE of 2-μm (equivalent spherical diameter) particles was 17%,19%,and 8%,respectively;and the relative standardized RE was 58%,49%,and 18%,respectively.In C.gigas and M.edulis,the minimal particle size for maximal retention did not change with food quality (organic content).C.farreri was more sensitive to fluctuations in particle concentration and organic content.With particle concentration increase,the minimal particle size for maximal retention in scallop shifted to large particles and the RE for 2-μm particle decreased from 8% in natural seawater to 1.6%-6% in silt-enriched groups.With organic content increase,the minimal particle size for maximal retention shifted from 8 to 5 μm in natural seawater.Variation in RE of C.farreri with food conditions and the relationship between lower RE and smaller particle size may hamper C.farreri from food taking due to the decrease in the size distribution of phytoplankton in Sungo Bay. 展开更多

An optical closure study on bio-optical relationships was carried out using radiative transfer model matrix operator method developed by Freie Universitat Berlin. As a case study, the optical closure of bio-optical relationships empirically parameterized with in situ data for the East China Sea was examined. Remote-sensing reflectance (Rrs) was computed from the inherent optical properties predicted by these biooptical relationships and compared with published in situ data. It was found that the simulated Rrs was overestimated for turbid water. To achieve optical closure, bio-optical relationships for absorption and scattering coefficients for suspended particulate matter were adjusted. Furthermore, the results show that the Fournier and Forand phase functions obtained from the adjusted relationships perform better than the Petzold phase function. Therefore, before bio-optical relationships are used for a local sea area, the optical closure should be examined. 展开更多

This work represents sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the local environment of five major stations at marshland in southern Iraq from May 2013. Average concentration of PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) in the sampling sediments and three types of plants were lower than the guideline value. This study examined presence of PAHs may from reach aquatic environment in marshes, deposition of airborne particles. Having a relatively low water solubility to the suspended particulate matter, most of the PAHs introduced to the aquatic environment tend to accumulate in bottom sediments. Sedimentary PAHs may thus provide a record of the input and history of these pollutants, and the distribution of PAH/'s in aquatic sediments has received considerable attention. Owing to the concentration of PAHs in the study area, its concentration level still meets the sediment quality guideline value (ERL: 4,022 ng/g dry weight); however, according to the PELq (probable effects level) factor, slightly adverse biological effects are associated with the exposure to PAHs levels in the study area (0.1 〈 PELq = 0.24 〈 0.5). 展开更多

It was found that the dewatering by sleeve type press filter was an efficient way of FCC dewatering. On the other hand, the results also proved that particle size distribution, volatile matter, ash content, pore size distribution and specific surface area of coal particles of FCC samples, as well as viscosity and density of FCC slurry, were important parameters in determining the process of efficient dewatering. Especially, wet mass to dry mass, specific resistance of average mass, compressibility factor and microstructure of filter cake explained the reasons and mechanisms of fine clean coal efficient dewatering. 展开更多

Enrichment characteristic of TSP elements and sources of pollution are discussed via statistical treatment of enrichment factor of elements and correlation analysis. Single-phase Ag2Al intermetallic nanoparticles, and Ag and Al metallic nanoparticles were synthesized by the flow-levitation (FL) method. Measurements of d-spacings from X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction confirmed that the intermetallic nanoparticles had the hexagonal Ag2Al structure. The morphology, crystal structure and chemical composition of Ag2Al nanoparticles were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and induction-coupled plasma spectroscopy. A thin amorphous coating was formed around the particles when exposed to air. Based on the XPS measurements, the surface coating of the Ag2Al nanoparticles could most likely be aluminum oxide or silver aluminum oxide. Therefore, the single-phase nanocrystalline Ag2Al intermetallic compound particles can be produced by adjusting some experimental parameters in FL method. 展开更多

Size-Dependent Growth Rate of Nitzschia closterium at Different Concentrations of Petroleum Hydrocarbon

The maximum growth rate ofNitzschia elosterium at various concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbon was studied. The influence of petroleum hydrocarbon on cell size as a function of concentration was discussed. The relationship between maximum growth rate of Nitzschia closterium and cell median equivalent spherical diameter (MESD) was also carefully studied. The experi- mental results showed that the growth rate of Nitzschia elosterium was generally suppressed by petroleum hydrocarbon, which had greater effects at both low and high concentrations than at intermediate concentrations. No significant changes in cell size distribu- tion were observed during the growth period ofNitzsehia closterium. The Gaussian function could give a clear description of the cell size distribution ofNitzsehia closterium, and the MESD value ranged from 2.71 to 6.82 μm. The MESD decreased when the cell was exposed to petroleum hydrocarbon, and the reduction of cell MESD was much more significant at both relatively high and low hydrocarbon concentrations. The presence of petroleum hydrocarbon changed the relationship between μmax, and MESD from an allometric function to a U-shaped curve. When the MESD was below 5.07 μm,μmax decreased along with increased MESD, whereas when MESD was above 5.07 μm, μmax increased along with MESD, which deviated from the allometric model. 展开更多
