To understand and i...The eastern fall cohort of the neon flying squid, Ommastrephes bartramii, has been commercially exploited by the Chinese squid jigging fleet in the central North Pacific Ocean since the late 1990s. To understand and identify their optimal habitat, we have developed a habitat suitability index (HSI) model using two potential important environmental variables -- sea surface temperature (SST) and sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) -- and fishery data from the main fishing ground (165°-180°E) during June and July of 1999-2003. A geometric mean model (GMM), minimum model (MM) and arithmetic weighted model (AWM) with different weights were compared and the best HSI model was selected using Akaike's information criterion (AIC). The performance of the developed HSI model was evaluated using fishery data for 2004. This study suggests that the highest catch per unit effort (CPUE) and fishing effort are closely related to SST and SSHA. The best SST- and SSHA-based suitability index (SI) regression models were SISST-based = 0.7SIeffort-SST + 0.3 SICPUE-SST, and SISSHA-based =0.5Sleffort-SSHA + 0.5SICPUE-SSHA, respectively, showing that fishing effort is more important than CPUE in the estimation of SI. The best HSI model was the AWM, defined as HSI=0.3SISSHA-based+ 0.7SISSHA-based, indicating that SSHA is more important than SST in estimating the HSI of squid. In 2004, monthly HSI values greater than 0.6 coincided with the distribution of productive fishing ground and high CPUE in June and July, suggesting that the models perform well. The proposed model provides an important tool in our efforts to develop forecasting capacity of squid spatial dynamics.展开更多
We propose a method to establish a dynamic model for a wave glider, a wave-propelled sea surface vehicle that can make use of wave energy to obtain thrust. The vehicle, composed of a surface float and a submerged glid...We propose a method to establish a dynamic model for a wave glider, a wave-propelled sea surface vehicle that can make use of wave energy to obtain thrust. The vehicle, composed of a surface float and a submerged glider in sea water, is regarded as a two-particle system. Kane's equations are used to establish the dynamic model. To verify the model, the design of a testing prototype is proposed and pool trials are conducted. The speeds of the vehicle under different sea conditions can be computed using the model, which is verified by pool trials. The optimal structure parameters useful for vehicle designs can also be obtained from the model. We illustrate how to build an analytical dynamics model for the wave glider, which is a crucial basis for the vehicle's motion control. The dynamics model also provides foundations for an off-line simulation of vehicle performance and the optimization of its mechanical designs.展开更多

In this ...The two key mechanisms for biologically driven carbon sequestration in oceans are the biological pump(BP) and the microbial carbon pump(MCP); the latter is scarcely simulated and quantified in the China seas. In this study, we developed a coupled physical-ecosystem model with major MCP processes in the South China Sea(SCS). The model estimated a SCSaveraged MCP rate of 1.55 mg C m^(-2) d^(-1), with an MCP-to-BP ratio of 1:6.08 when considering the BP at a depth of 1000 m.Moreover, the ecosystem responses were projected in two representative global warming scenarios where the sea surface temperature increased by 2 and 4°C. The projection suggested a declined productivity associated with the increased near-surface stratification and decreased nutrient supply, which leads to a reduction in diatom biomass and consequently the suppression of the BP. However, the relative ratio of picophytoplankton increased, inducing a higher microbial activity and a nonlinear response of MCP to the increase in temperature. On average, the ratio of MCP-to-BP at a 1000-m depth increased to 1:5.95 with surface warming of 4°C, indicating the higher impact of MCP in future ocean carbon sequestration.展开更多
