This article tackles such lacunae by providing a relational perspective based on the extraction of vessel movement archives from the Lloyd's List corpus. Two complementary analyses are proposed: long-term dynamics with all ships included(1890–2008) and medium-term dynamics focusing on container flows(1978–2016). Each analysis examines China's maritime connectivity in various ways and on different spatial scales, from the global to the local, in terms of concentration, vulnerability, and expansion. The main results underline the influence of technological, economic, and political factors on the changing distribution of connectivity internally and externally. In particular, China has managed to reduce its dependence upon external transit hubs, to increase the internal connectivity of its own port system, and to strengthen its dominance towards an increasing number of foreign nodes and trade partners through the maritime network.展开更多

Based on the causality of the every element in the port-city system, the authors analyzed the feedback relation and logical relation among the system variables and system structure. A system-dynamic flow chart and correlation equations were put forward with VENSIM software, the quantitative relation was described, and the model was debugged. The development trend of the main influence factors in port-city system was simulated. By changing the influence degree of each related factor. It is found the parameters values of variables in the model, we studied that: 1) Foreign trade throughput of port play an important role in the development of export-oriented economy. 2) The development of primary industry and secondary industry affects most of the water transportation demand. With the constant increase of tertiary industry proportion in the industrial structure, the demand of national economy for water transportation decreases gradually. 3) Water transportation presents a kind of oversupply development situation, so port construction should properly slow down. 4) With the development of ports, its direct and indirect contribution to urban economy has been continuously increasing, but contribution rate will be continuously decreasing.展开更多

It is inevitable, however, that certain problems exist during the construction of ecological city, which include but not limited to non-harmonious development of urban complex ecosystem, and the difficulty in quantifying eco-city construction or incomplete quantification in assessing the con- structiori of present and future eco-city. Based on the analysis on social-economic conditions and regional conditions of the UAYD, this paper attempts to set up an index system of eco-cities combining with local characteristics, and to adopt the indices of eco-city, urban harmony, and eco-city colligate to evaluate the ecological level, urban harmonious development and eco-city construction of cities within the UAYD. Results indicate that among 15 cities in UAYD, Suzhou City ranks the highest in terms of eco-city construction, whereas Nantong ranks relatively lower; sustainable eco-city construction is possible only when cities are developed in every respect of harmony.展开更多

A ship shaped floatable structure with a huge power generator on board becomes the temporary but effective solution. However, these converted ex-ships are still legally ships in order to admit them sufficiently within the scope of a leading convention, which applies to marine and air pollution from ships. This issue needs research on the legal definition of the "ship" to clarify if it is a ship and to determine whether that would also fall within the concept of MARPOL.展开更多

In France in the 1860s, we know of painters like Claude Monet were working on beaches and port cities to capture the effect of scenes under natural light. By 1874 the Anonymous Society of Painters, Sculptors, Engravers, etc. (Impressionists) offered their first public exhibition to much criticism. A common complaint of the new work was that it lacked finish to be considered as a completed work for sale. It is the view of this paper that outdoor, or plein air painting, developed because of the circumstances this type of work developed in the artist naturally. I focus on two areas that outdoor painting forced the artist to consider: incidents and accidents. The incidents refer to the varied weather the painter had to deal with and the accidents identify the intuitive methods the plein air painters fell practice to when confronted by difficult passages or situations in nature. These experiences would shift the focus of the Impressionists from recording nature in a naturalistic way to self-expression, which would become a key idea in early modem painting. The finish the detractors of Impressionism called for would be replaced by an appreciation for the personal in painting as exacting images of landscape became predictable and lacked the vitality of the intuitive picture that could offer something new to art.展开更多

The results can be summarized as three main findings: (1) The improvements of port efficiency and reduction of road transport costs play a vital role in China's export competitiveness in the global market. The coefficient estimates on them are relatively large, around 0.72 and -0.89, respectively; (2) The effect of transport costs and port efficiency on China-to-Asia exports significantly exceeds that on China-to-Europe and China-to-America exports; (3) The overall estimated elasticity of road, railroad and port measure is 1.66, which is almost three times that of the average wage of port cities. The empirical results provide strong evidences that upgrading China's transport service networks should offer greater scope for maintaining and increasing its competitive edge in low cost productions. The findings offer some insights and priorities for government policy making.展开更多

It was only after a lengthy process of evolution that Macao finally developed into a commercial city. The special political environment, administrative patterns and social experiences of early Macao created a unique character and tradition of "harmony amidst difference, and difference amidst harmony" that was maintained for centuries with undiminished vitality.展开更多
