In order to effectively assess the mechanical properties of concrete with freeze-thaw and seawater erosion, tests about basic mechanical properties of concrete after freeze-thaw and seawater erosion are conducted based on the large-scale static and dynamic stiffness servo test set. 50, 100, 200 and 300 cycles of freeze-thaw cycling are made on normal concrete, and the artificial seawater is produced. The reasonable wet and dry accelerate system is selected. 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 cycles of wet and dry cycling are made to concrete after freeze-thaw cycling. The degeneration law of the concrete elastic modulus and compressive strength is studied. The Ottosen tri-axial strength criterion considering cycles of freeze-thaw and wet and dry cycling is deduced based on uniaxial mechanical properties of concrete and damage theory. Experimental results show that with the increase in the number of wet and dry cycles and freeze-thaw cycles, the concrete axial compressive strength and the elastic modulus decline gradually. Tensile and compressive meridians of concrete shrink gradually. The research can be referenced for anti-crack design of actual structures eroded by seawater at cold regions. 展开更多

The degradation progress of recycled aggregate concrete(RAC) subjected to sulfate attack under wetting-drying cycles and flexural loading is studied. Three different stress ratios(0, 0.3 and 0.5) were applied in this test. The variations of relative dynamic elastic modulus Erd and water-soluble SO2-4 contents in RAC were used to evaluate degradation progress. The changes in mineral products and microstructures of interior concrete were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction(XRD), the environmental scanning electron microscope(ESEM) and X-ray computed tomography(X-CT). The results indicate that flexural loading accelerates the degradation of RAC under sulfate attack and wetting-drying cycles by expediting the transmission of SO2-4 into interior concrete. Furthermore, the accelerated effect of flexural loading is more obvious with the increase of stress ratio, that is because higher stress ratios can accelerate the extension of microcracks and generate more channels for the transmission of SO2-4. Also, more expansive products(gypsum and ettringite) are generated by the reaction of Ca(OH)2 with SO2-4, which can further accelerate the degradation of RAC. 展开更多

Cracks resulting from cyclic wetting and drying of expansive soils create discontinuities and anisotropy in the soil. The representative elementary volume(REV)defined by the continuous-media theory cannot be applied to cracked expansive soils that are considered discontinuous media. In this study, direct shear tests of three different scales(30 cm^(2),900 cm^(2),1963 cm^(2))and crack image analysis were carried out on undisturbed soil samples subjected to drying-wetting cycles in-situ.The REV size of expansive soil was investigated using the crack intensity factor(CIF)and soil cohesion. The results show that soil cohesion decreased with increasing sample area, and the development of secondary cracks further exacerbated the size effect of sample on cohesion of the soil.As shrinkage cracks developed, the REV size of the soil gradually increased and plateaued after 3−5 cycles.Under the same drying-wetting cycle conditions, the REV size determined using soil cohesion(REV-C)is 1.75 to 2.97 times the REV size determined using CIF(REV-CIF).Under the influence of shrinkage cracks, the average CIF is positively correlated with the REV size determined using different maximum permissible errors, with the coefficient of correlation greater than 0.9.A method for determining the REV-C based on crack image analysis is proposed, and the REV-C of expansive soil in the study area under different exposure times is given. 展开更多

The corrosion behaviors of zinc alloy (ZnAl4Cul) in 3.5% (mass fraction) NaCl, 7.3% (mass fraction) Na2SO4 and simulated acid rain solutions were investigated using electrochemical measurements. The potential noise during dry-wet cycle was monitored and analyzed by fast Fourier transform (FFT), fast wavelet transform (FWT), shot noise theory and stochastic theory. Cumulative probability curves of event frequency fn indicate that the corrosion events in the dry cycles are greater than those in the wet cycles. Uniform corrosion was observed in the NaCl solution compared with more localized corrosion in the Na2SO4 solution, which is evidenced by FWT and SEM. Conditional events generation rate r(t) for diffusion controlled reactions decreases with increasing the time. r(t) values for uniform corrosion and diffusion controlled process are the largest in the wet cycle in 3.5% NaCl solution. The values of r(t) for pitting corrosion in Na2SO4 solution are observed to become large during spraying periods, and r(t) for pitting corrosion has the largest value in the Na2SO4 solution. The intergranular corrosion of zinc is serious in simulated acid rain solution. 展开更多

Many geotechnical structures, such as the subgrade of high-speed railway, are extremely sensitive to micro deformations. As one of the most commonly used indexes in China to evaluate the potential swelling level of expansive soils, the effectiveness and accuracy of free swelling ratio should be highly required. However, due to the deficiency of geotechnical test regulations for the free swelling ratio test,non-negligible variation difference is often observed among the test results of the same type of soil samples. Thus,a series of laboratory tests are conducted to figure out the influences of soil particle size, initial soil temperature, and wet-dry circulation on the free swelling ratio of expansive soils. The results show that the initial soil temperature exerts an obvious influence on free swelling ratio and a relative weak influence on soil mass of expansive soil with the micro soil particle size(d<0.075 mm),and the correlation becomes unclear when soil particle size is within the range of 0.075 mm≤d<0.500 mm.A larger particle size of expansive soils induces a larger free swelling ratio and soil mass in the soil measuring cup regardless of initial soil temperature. However, the enlarging amplitude decreases as the particle size of expansive soils increases. There is a progressive enlargement of free swelling ratio at the first two wet-dry cycles and then it attenuates gradually when the number of wetdry cycles further increases. 展开更多

Based on the drying-wetting cycles experiment and the carbonation-drying-wetting cycles experiment for coral aggregate seawater concrete(CASC)with different strength grades, the effects of carbonation-drying-wetting on the durability of CASC are studied with the surface state, mass loss rate, relative dynamic elastic modulus, ultrasonic wave velocity and cube compressive strength as indices. Results show that the mass loss rate of CASC increases gradually with the increase in cycle times in the drying-wetting and carbonation-drying-wetting cycles. The mass loss rate increases relatively slowly at the initial stage but it increases remarkably after 10 cycles. The relative dynamic elastic modulus and ultrasonic wave velocity decrease gradually with the increase in cycle times. After 6 cycles, the decrease rate of the relative dynamic elastic modulus and ultrasonic wave velocity of CASC tends to be flat and the surface is slightly damaged.Compared with the initial 28 d cube compressive strength, the cube compressive strength of CASC decreases by 8.8%to 11.0%.Drying-wetting cycles and carbonation can accelerate seawater erosion on CASC,and drying-wetting cycles result in salting-out and accelerate the destruction of concrete. Therefore, the carbonation-drying-wetting accelerates the destruction of CASC. 展开更多

Textile-reinforced concrete(TRC)is suitable to repair and reinforce concrete structures in harsh environments. The performance of the interface between TRC and existing concrete is an important factor in determining the strengthening effect of TRC.In this paper,a double-sided shear test was performed to investigate the effects of the chloride dry-wet cycles on the average shear strength and slip at the interface between the TRC and existing concrete, also considering the existing concrete strength, bond length, textile layer and short-cut fiber arrangements. In addition,X-ray diffraction(XRD)technology was used to analyze the microscopic matter at the interface in the corrosive environment. The experimental results indicate that the interface performance between TRC and existing concrete would decrease with continued chloride dry-wet cycles.Compared with the specimen with a single layer of textile reinforcement, the specimens with two layers of textile with added PVA or AR-glass short-cut fibers could further improve the properties of the interface between the TRC layer and existing concrete. For the TRC with a single layer of textile, the average shear strength tended to decrease with increasing bond length. In addition, the strength grade of the existing concrete had a minor effect on the interface properties. 展开更多

Due to the influence of the groundwater level, the internal humidity of the subgrade changes and the stability of the subgrade is affected. The main purpose of this paper is to obtain a reliable model of subgrade soil water content variation under the action of dry-wet cycle through sensor readings. Thus,an indoor soil column model test system is designed, and the readings of the sensors are used to determine the changing law of moisture field in the subgrade soil. The sensor readings indicate that the water content gradually decreases along the height of the soil column, and the water in the upper part of the soil column continuously loses, while the water in the lower part migrates upward to supplement. With the increase of dry-wet cycle index, the water holding capacity of soil decreases, and the soil surface gradually cracks and tends to rupture. 展开更多

Solidification/stabilization (S/S) is one of the most effective methods of dealing with heavy metal contaminated soils. The effects of cyclic wetting and drying on solidified/stabilized contaminated soils were investigated. A series of test program, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test, TCLP leaching test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) test, were performed on lead and zinc contaminated soils solidified/stabilized by fly ash. Test results show that UCS and the leaching characteristics of heavy metal ions of S/S contaminated soils are significantly improved with the increase of fly ash content. UCS of S/S soils firstly increases with the increase of the times of drying and wetting cycles, after reaching the peak, it decreases with it. When the pollutant content is lower (1 000 mg/kg), the TCLP concentration first slightly decreases under cyclic drying and wetting, then increases, but the change is minor. The TCLP concentration is higher under a high pollutant content of 5 000 mg/kg, and increases with the increase of the times of drying and wetting cycles. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) test are consistent with UCS tests and TCLP leaching tests, which reveals the micro-mechanism of the variations of engineering properties of stabilized contaminated soils after drying and wetting cycles. 展开更多

The damage process of concrete exposed to sodium sulfate attack and drying-wetting cycles was investigated. The water to binder(W/B) ratio and the concentration of sulfate solution were taken as variable parameters. Through the experiment, visual change, relative dynamic modulus of elasticity(RDME) and the surface damage layer thickness of concrete were measured.Furthermore, SEM and thermal analysis were used to investigate the changing of microstructure and corrosion products of concrete. The test results show that the ultrasonic velocity is related to the damage layer of concrete. It approves that an increase in damage layer thickness reduces the compactness and the ultrasonic velocity. The deterioration degree of concrete could be estimated effectively by measuring the surface damage layer and the RDME of concrete. It is also found that the content of gypsum in concrete is less than that of ettringite in test, and some gypsum is checked only after a certain corrosion extent. When the concrete is with high W/B ratio or exposed to high concentration of sulfate solution, the content of ettringite first increases and then decreases with corrosion time. However, the content of gypsum increases at a steady rate. The content of corrosion products does not correspond well with the observations of RDME change, and extensive amount of corrosion products can be formed before obvious damage occurs. 展开更多
