A specific revised HFCVD apparatus and a novel process combining HFCVD and polishing technique were presented to deposit the micro-and nano-crystalline multilayered ultra-smooth diamond(USCD) film on the interior-hole surface of WC-Co drawing dies with aperture ranging from d1.0 mm to 60 mm.Characterization results indicate that the surface roughness values(Ra) in the entry zone,drawing zone and bearing zone of as-fabricated USCD coated drawing die were measured as low as 25.7,23.3 and 25.5 nm,respectively.Furthermore,the friction properties of USCD films were examined in both dry sliding and water-lubricating conditions,and the results show that the USCD film presents much superior friction properties.Its friction coefficients against ball-bearing steel,copper and silicon nitride balls(d4 mm),is always lower than that of microcrystalline diamond(MCD) or WC-Co sample,regardless of the lubricating condition.Meanwhile,it still presents competitive wear resistance with the MCD films.Finally,the working lifetime and performance of as-fabricated USCD coated drawing dies were examined under producing low-carbon steel pipes in dry-sliding and water-lubricating conditions.Under the water-lubricating drawing condition,its production significantly increases by about 20 times compared with the conventional WC-Co drawing dies. 展开更多

This study aims to examine the usability of environmentally harmless vegetable oil in the minimum quantity of lubrication(MQL)system in face milling of AISI O2 steel and to optimize the cutting parameters by different statistical methods.Vegetable oil was preferred as cutting fluid,and Taguchi method was used in the preparation of the test pattern.After testing with the prepared test pattern,cutting performance in all parameters has been improved according to dry conditions thanks to the MQL system.The highest tool life was obtained by using cutting parameters of 7.5 m cutting length,100 m/min cutting speed,100 mL/h MQL flow rate and 0.1 mm/tooth feed rate.Optimum cutting parameters were determined according to the Taguchi analysis,and the obtained parameters were confirmed with the verification tests.In addition,the optimum test parameter was determined by applying the gray relational analysis method.After using ANOVA analysis according to the measured surface roughness and cutting force values,the most effective cutting parameter was observed to be the feed rate.In addition,the models for surface roughness and cutting force values were obtained with precisions of 99.63%and 99.68%,respectively.Effective wear mechanisms were found to be abrasion and adhesion. 展开更多

Such machining inhere... In all machining processes, tool wear is a natural phenomenon and it leads to tool failure. The growing demands for high productivity of machining need use of high cutting velocity and feed rate. Such machining inherently produces high cutting temperature, which not only reduces tool life but also impairs the product quality. Metal cutting fluid changes the performance of machining operations because of their lubrication, cooling and chip flushing functions, but the use of cutting fluid has become more problematic in terms of both employee health and environmental pollution. The minimization of cutting fluid also leads to economical benefits by way of saving lubricant costs and workpiece/tool/machine cleaning cycle time. The concept of minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) has been suggested since a decade ago as a means of addressing the issues of environmental intru- siveness and occupational hazards associated with the airborne cutting fluid particles on factory shop floors. This paper deals with experimental investigation on the role of MQL by vegetable oil on cutting temperature, tool wear, surface roughness and dimen- sional deviation in turning AISI-1060 steel at industrial speed-feed combinations by uncoated carbide insert. The encouraging results include significant reduction in tool wear rate, dimensional inaccuracy and surface roughness by MQL mainly through reduction in the cutting zone temperature and favorable change in the chip-tool and work-tool interaction. 展开更多

Investigation of MQL-Employed Hard-Milling Process of S60C Steel Using Coated-Cermented Carbide Tools

The application of cutting fluids in machining brings out many benefits, but their use is accompanied by health and enviroment hazards. MQL (Minimum Quantity Lubricant) has become a preciously alternative solution for lubrication against dry machinning and flood cooling lubricant, and this is a step toward green machining. This paper presents a comprehensively experiemental study on investigation of MQL performance in hard milling of S60C steel for multiple responses, including surface quality, cutting forces and tool wear. Compared to dry milling, even-enhanced surfaces finish quality, 20% less cutting force (Ft) and almost 112% prolonged tool lifetime are achieved by using MQL with 5% Emulsion in hard milling. In addition, this study compared the performances of MQL milling by using 5% Emulsion to the peanut oil completely harmless to the enviroment. This encouraging result, therefore, reveals that the MQL-employed hard milling can enable significant improvement in productivity, product quality, and overall machining economy even after covering the additional cost of designing and implementing MQL system. Moreover, this study also shows the limitation of peanut oils employed in MQL and proposes the further research in novel additives to enhance the performance of cooling lubricant for vegetable oils. 展开更多

Micro fabrication of freeform surface parts made of hard and brittle materials is always a tough job in micro machining field. This paper tries to fabricate freeform surface feature by using smooth surface of tool electrode after tool wear in micro EDM. According to the skin effect theory, the tool end shape in the stage of uniform wear can be changed by adjusting the frequency of discharge pulse. The electrical energy distributing rule of tool electrode section in RC circuit has been investigated under the influence of skin effect, and the law of spark location change has been summarized. The experimental studies demonstrate that different shapes of tool ends can be achieved by varying the pulse frequencies of discharge power supply. Additionally, a micro part of freeform surface feature with high precision and good surface quality has been successfully obtained by micro EDM through adopting the smooth surface after tool wear. 展开更多

In this paper,we propose a novel nonlinear oscillator with strong irrational nonlinearities having smooth and discontinuous characteristics depending on the values of a smoothness parameter.The oscillator is similar to the SD oscillator,originally introduced in Phys Rev E 69(2006).The equilibrium stability and the complex bifurcations of the unperturbed system are investigated.The bifurcation sets of the equilibria in parameter space are constructed to demonstrate transitions in the multiple well dynamics for both smooth and discontinuous regimes.The Melnikov method is employed to obtain the analytical criteria of chaotic thresholds for the singular closed orbits of homoclinic,homo-heteroclinic,cuspidal heteroclinic and tangent homoclinic orbits of the perturbed system. 展开更多
