It is a reasonable idea to combine their merits together to design a novel insulator. The key measure of the novel insulator suggested in this paper is to add an annular metal sheet coated with high temperature vulcanisation (HTV) silicone rubber (SIR) at the base of the traditional ceramic insulator cap. The HTVSIR covering on the exterior of the metal sheet can lengthen the creepage distance. The metal sheet can uniform the electric stress, reduce its maximum value and modify its direction on one insulator unit and acts as equalizing ring on an insulator string. The factors stated above are the main reasons why the novel insulator has better insulating performance, including lower leakage current and flashover voltage, especially under polluted conditions. Simultaneously, the novel insulator can overcome the disadvantages of the ordinary remedies which have been widely used to improve the performance of ceramic insulators against pollution. The experimental results obtained in the laboratory were in good agreement with the theoretical analysis and demonstrated the novel insulator's effectiveness.展开更多

However, the in situ bioremediation of crude oil is usually inhibited by deficiency of inorganic nutrients. To understand the effects of nutrient addition on the bioremediation of crude oil and the succession of bacterial communities during process of bioremediation, microcosms containing oilcontaminated sediments were constructed and biodegradation of crude oil was assessed based on the depletion of different ingredients. We used two culture-independent methods, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and a 16 S rRNA gene based clone library, to analyze the succession of bacterial communities. The results suggested n-alkanes were degraded after 30 days and that nutrient amendments significantly improved the efficiency of their biodegradation. Moreover, oil contamination and nutrient amendments could dramatically change bacterial community structures. Lower diversity was detected after being contaminated with oil. For instance, bacterial clones affiliated with the phylum Armatimonadetes, Firmicutes, Gemmatimonadetes, and Planctomycetes and the class Deltaproteobacteria and Epsilonproteobacteria could not be identified after 30 days of incubation with crude oil. However, "professional hydrocarbonocastic bacteria" became abundant in samples treated with oil during the bioremediation period, while these clones were almost completely absent from the control plots. Interestingly, bioinformatics analysis showed that even when dramatic differences in oil biodegradation efficiency were observed, bacterial communities in the plots with nutrient amendments were not significantly different from those in plots treated with oil alone. These findings indicated that nutrient amendments could stimulate the process of biodegradation but had less impact on bacterial communities. Overall, nutrient amendments might be able to stimulate the growth of n-alkane degrading bacteria.展开更多

The soil is a major recipient of this spilled crude. When contaminated with crude oil, the load bearing capacity is consequently affected. This study aimed at providing a statistical evidence to prove that the impact of crude oil contamination on the soil's bearing capacity is significant. Four samples of uncontaminated soil of Kwale were collected and analyzed for their load bearing properties: cohesion (c), angle of internal friction (θ°) and bulk density (γ). These soil samples were polluted with crude oil in levels of 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% and compared with intact soil. A consistent reduction was observed in the bearing capacity as the crude oil level increased. Using the SPSS (statistically package for social sciences), the significance was tested at the various contamination levels at a 5% confidence level and the result showed significance at 15% and 20% levels with calculated P-values of 0.038 and 0.035 respectively for both the square and strip foundation footings.展开更多
