Effects of Zn addition on mechanical properties of eutectic Sn-58Bi solder during liquid-state aging 被引量:9

Interfacial reaction, tensile strength and creep resistance of Sn-58Bi-x Zn(x=0, 0.7, mass fraction, %) solder samples during liquid-state aging were investigated. The coarsening of Bi and the growth of Cu-Sn intermetallic compounds(IMCs) in Sn-58Bi-0.7Zn solder sample were both effectively suppressed. With the addition of 0.7% Zn, ultimate tensile strengths(UTSs) of the Sn-58 Bi solder slabs were respectively increased by 6.05% and 5.50% after reflow soldering and liquid-state aging, and those of the Cu/Sn-58Bi/Cu solder joints were also increased by 21.51% and 29.27%, respectively. The increase in strengthening effect of Cu/Sn-58Bi-x Zn/Cu solder joints could be attributed to the fracture surface which was changed from the Cu/IMC interface to the IMC/solder interface due to the finer Bi grain. Nanoindentation results revealed that the creep behavior of Sn-58Bi-0.7Zn solder was significantly improved compared with that of the eutectic Sn-58 Bi solder after reflow soldering and liquid-state aging. 展开更多

A novel Sn-2.5Ag-2.0Ni alloy was used for soldering SiCp/Al composites substrate deposited with electroless Ni(5%P) (mass fraction)and Ni(10%P)(mass fraction)layers.It is observed that variation of P contents in the electroless Ni(P)layer results in different types of microstructures of SnAgNi/Ni(P)solder joint.The morphology of Ni3Sn4 intermetallic compounds(IMCs)formed between the solder and Ni(10%P)layer is observed to be needle-like and this shape provides high speed diffusion channels for Ni to diffuse into solder that culminates in high growth rate of Ni3Sn4.The diffusion of Ni into solder furthermore results in the formation of Kirkendall voids at the interface of Ni(P)layer and SiCp/Al composites substrate.It is observed that solder reliability is degraded by the formation of Ni2SnP,P rich Ni layer and Kirkendall voids.The compact Ni3Sn4 IMC layer in Ni(5%P)solder joint prevents Ni element from diffusing into solder,resulting in a low growth rate of Ni3Sn4 layer.Meanwhile,the formation of Ni2SnP that significantly affects the reliability of solder joints is suppressed by the low P content Ni(5%P)layer.Thus,shear strength of Ni(5%P) solder joint is concluded to be higher than that of Ni(10%P)solder joint.Growth of Ni3Sn4 IMC layer and formation of crack are accounted to be the major sources of the failure of Ni(5%P)solder joint. 展开更多

The repair welding of UNS C95700manganese?aluminum bronze plates was done using different filler metals.Themicrostructure and mechanical properties of welds were studied.The main microstructural constituents wereα,βandκphases withdifferent morphologies.The addition of manganese decreased the percentage ofαphase in the microstructure of weldments from80%(Mn-free weld)to57%(12.5%Mn weld,mass fraction).The morphology ofκphase was lamellar in high nickel specimens andit was changed to a globular morphology for high manganese welds.Although the application of high manganese filler metal yieldedthe higher tensile and bending strengths of weldment compared with the weld using high nickel filler material,the optimummechanical properties of repair welds were obtained using a non-alloy filler material(ERCuAl-A2)for the underlay and highmanganese filler metal(ERCuMnNiAl)for filling passes.This weld presented an increase of39%in tensile strength compared withthe base metal,and no cracking was observed after bending test. 展开更多

That is, the aim of the study is producing the joint of dissimilar materials evaluated to be difficult for friction welding and non-round shape joints. In this process, after the intermediate material generates the independent friction heat on every side of the specimens, it is removed instantaneously and upset process begins to weld the specimens for a joint. In this study, similar joint of A2017 aluminum alloy and one of S45C steel were examined. Comparative studies on the relationship between the welding parameters and joining efficiency in the friction welding of hybrid Al203-reinforced aluminum composites were conducted. Metal matrix composites (MMCs) with 37% (volume fraction) aluminum particle were joined by friction welding. The results show that the effects of the rotation speed on the reduction rate of particle size are greater than those of the upset pressure, and the area of the MMC weld zone decreases as the joining efficiency increases, while it is considered that the joining efficiency does not increase as the reduction rate of particle size decreases. During the macro-examination of the bonding interlace, a gray discolored region was observed on the bonding interface, and the center of the region was dark gray. After the micro-examination of the bonding interface, base metal made some second particulate formed by condensed alumina particulate but discoloration part distributed minute alumina particulate without second particulate. Consequently, it was also observed that rotational speed of 3 000 r/min and upset pressure of 63.6 MPa showed a very good.joint. 展开更多

Friction Stir Welding Effect on Transverse Rigidity and Sound Transmission Characteristics of AZ31B Magnesium Alloy

AZ31B magnesium alloy was subjected to friction stir welding with various welding parameters. The equivalent Young's moduli of the friction stir welded samples and the base material were obtained by the three-point method, and their transverse rigidities were obtained as well. Furthermore, the sound transmission characteristics of those samples were experimentally studied by four-microphone impedance tube method. The experimental results indicate that the transverse rigidities of the friction stir welded samples were only 79%, 83% and 92% of those of the base material, respectively. The sound transmission losses of the processed samples were also lower, which was largely due to the reduction of transverse rigidities induced by the decrease of equivalent Young's moduli. 展开更多

Currently the aluminum alloy resistance spot welding(AA-RSW) has been extensively used for light weight automotive body-in-white manufacturing.However the aluminum alloys such as AA5182 have inferior weldability for forming the joint due to their high reflectiveness to heat and light.Therefore it is necessary to further develop the high performance control strategy and the set-up of a new welding schedule.The welding process identification is the essential issue where the difficulty arises from the fact that the AA-RSW is a nonlinear time-varying uncertain process which couples the thermal,electrical,mechanical and metallurgical dynamics.To understand this complicated physical phenomenon a novel dual-phase M-series pseudo-random electrical pattern is adopted to excite the AA-RSW electrical-thermal process and the thermal response is recorded according to the welding power outputs.Based on the experimental information,the transfer function of an AA-RSW electrical- thermal mechanism is identified,and the optimum model order and parameters are determined.Subsequently a control-oriented DC AA-RSW model is established to explore the welding power control algorithm.The simulated results of the control model show agreement with the experimental data,which validates its feasibility for the corresponding welding control. 展开更多
