Effect of blade pitch angle on aerodynamic performance of straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine 被引量:3

Wind energy is one of the most promising renewable energy sources, straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine(S-VAWT) appears to be particularly promising for the shortage of fossil fuel reserves owing to its distinct advantages, but suffers from poor self-starting and low power coefficient. Variable-pitch method was recognized as an attractive solution to performance improvement, thus majority efforts had been devoted into blade pitch angle effect on aerodynamic performance. Taken into account the local flow field of S-VAWT, mathematical model was built to analyze the relationship between power outputs and pitch angle. Numerical simulations on static and dynamic performances of blade were carried out and optimized pitch angle along the rotor were presented. Comparative analyses of fixed pitch and variable-pitch S-VAWT were conducted, and a considerable improvement of the performance was obtained by the optimized blade pitch angle, in particular, a relative increase of the power coefficient by more than 19.3%. It is further demonstrated that the self-starting is greatly improved with the optimized blade pitch angle. 展开更多

More than 150 years ago, wood, which is one form of biomass, supplied up to 90 percent of our energy needs. Today, we are looking again at renewable resources to find new ways to use them to help meet our energy needs. Overall consumption from renewable sources in the United States totaled 6.8 quads BTU (quadrillion Btu) in 2007 or about 7 percent of all energy used nationally. Consumption from renewable sources was at its highest point in 1997, at about 7.2 quads. Over half of renewable energy goes to producing electricity. Renewable energy plays an important role in the supply of energy. Even with the current fluctuating prices for fuel, U.S. residents and businesses pay a significant price for their utilities. Emissions from the evaporation and combustion of these traditional fossil fuels contributing to a range of environmental and health problems, causing poor air quality, and emitting greenhouse gases caused global warming. The method of producing alternative energy from municipal solid waste plastic is considered an effective way to meet the demand of energy need and save the environment at the same time. 展开更多

Combustion of Renewable Biogas Fuels

Biogas fuel is a sustainable and renewable fuel produced from anaerobic digestion of organic matter. The biogas fuel is a flammable mixture of methane and carbon dioxide with low to medium calorific values. Biogas is an alternative to conventional fossil fuels and can be used for beating, transportation and power generation. CFD (computational fluid dynamic) analysis of the combustion performance and emissions of biogas fuel in gas turbine engines is presented in this study. The main objective of this study is to understand the impact of the variability in the biogas fuel compositions and lower heating values on the combustion process. Natural gas, biogas from anaerobic digester, landfill biogas, and natural gas/biogas mixture fuels combustion were investigated in this study. The CFD results show lower peak flame temperature and CO mole fractions inside the combustor and lower NOx emissions at the combustor exit for the biogas compared to natural gas fuel. The peak flame temperature decreases by 37% for the biogas landfill (COJCH4 = 0.89) and by 22% for the biogas anaerobic digester (CO2/CH4 = 0.54) compared to natural gas fuel combustion. The peak CO mole fraction inside the combustor decreases from 9.8 × 10-2 for natural gas fuel to 2.22 × 10-4 for biogas anaerobic digester and 1.32 × 10-7 for biogas landfill. The average NOx mole fraction at the combustor exit decreases from 1.13 × 10-5 for natural gas fuel to 0.40 × 10-6 for biogas anaerobic digester and 1.06 × 10-6 for biogas landfill. The presence of non-combustible constituents in the biogas reduces the temperature of the flame and consequently the NOx emissions. 展开更多
