Milk samples were collected from local markets at Peshawar, Pakistan, and analyzed for their physical features, including moisture, total solids, specific gravity, conductivity, viscosity and titratable acidity (lactic acid equivalent), and chemical components and macro-minerals, including total protein, casein, lactose, ash and minerals (Na, K and Mg). These items were compared with the physicochemical characteristics of the fresh natural milk samples from buffalo, cow and goat. The results were also compared with reported nutritional quality of milk from various countries and World Health Organization (WHO) standards. We found that all the physical features and chemical components of commercially available milk in Pakistan markets meet WHO's requirements, except for Na, K, Ca and Mg, which are below the standards.展开更多

In this study, we evaluated the structure of microbial communities of rhizosphere of Cowskin Azalea(Rhododendron aureum Georgi) populations and compared with non-rhizosphere soils at four sample sites of the Changbai Mountains, China, and analyzed the correlation between chemical properties of soil and microbial communities. The results showed that microbial structure and soil chemical properties are significant superior to non-rhizosphere at all four sample sites. The rhizosphere microorganisms are mainly composed of bacteria, actinomycetes, followed by fungi least. The principal component analysis(PCA) biplot displayed that there are differences between rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils for microflora; Through correlation analysis, we found that the bacteria is clearly influenced by p H on the Changbai Mountains, besides p H, other soil features such as NO3–-N. These data highlight that R. aureum as the dominant vegetation living in the alpine tundra is a key factor in the formation of soil microorganism and improving soil fertility, and is of great significance for the maintenance of alpine tundra ecosystem.展开更多

The aim of this study was to isolate and to characterize (molecular and biological characterization) BoHV-1 from 29 immunosuppressed animals. It was possible to obtain 18 isolates, each from a different animal, such as from the respiratory and reproductive tracts. In some cases the cytopathic effect was visible 12 hours post-inoculation, and became characteristic after 36-48 hours. Biological characteristics were evaluated and compared with Iowa and Colorado-1 reference strains, and differences were found in plaque size, virus titer measured by TCID50 and PFU/mL, and one step virus curves. These results showed that some isolates had a highly virulent-like behavior in vitro, compared to the reference strains, with shorter eclipse periods, faster release of virus into the supernatants, and higher burst size and viral titer. There were no differences in glycoprotein expression of BoHV-1 isolates, measured by Western blot on monolayers. Moreover, using restriction endonucleases analysis, most of the viruses were confirmed as BoHV-1.1 and just one of them was confirmed as BoHV-1.2a subtype. These findings suggest that some wild-type BoHV-1 isolates could be useful as seeds to develop new monovalent vaccines.展开更多

The flexibility implemented by batch ultrafiltration (UF) and diafiltration (DF) allowed for the production and ovine WPC with 61 -87% (dry basis). Diatiltration, performed in of liquid bovine WPC with 43-66% protein contents (dry basis) sequential dilution mode (DFsdm) did not improve significantly the composition of WPC liquid products comparing to the results achieved by conventional UF. However, using DF in volume reduction mode (DFvrm) protein content was increased more than 20% comparing to conventional UF. Ovine products showed higher protein levels (62-84% dry basis) what makes their manufacture attractive. Protein profiles varied with the whey origin and with the concentration process. Using batch DFvrm was possible to obtain richer protein products free of low MW compounds.展开更多

The author analyzed all aspects of CD. Contrary to common belief, this disorder is a systemic disease, rather than a pure digestive alteration. In fact, CD is associated with several diseases: skin manifestations, endocrine disorders, iron-deficiency anemia, osteoporosis, hypertransaminasemia, neurologic disorders and cancer. In the description of skin manifestations, the author reported the association between CD and dermatitis herpetiformis (DH). This condition affects about 15%-25% of patients with CD. Antibodies for CD have been detected in patients with DH. As CD and DH may be vastly different, they both share a unique intestinal sensitivity to gluten. The rash of DH is thought to be an external marker of the underlying intestinal sensitivity that is likely to be the result of molecular mimicry between the auto-antigen tissue transglutaminase resident in the gut and the skin derived epidermal transglutaminase[3]. However, our study group has reported all CD-associated skin manifestations described in the literature, and in particular psoriasis.展开更多

Naturally-occurring trans fats, including trans vaccenic acid (TVA) derived from a conjugated isomer of linoleic acid (18:2 cis-9, trans-11), (CLA) in contrast, are recognized as having potentially beneficial effects on human health. These natural trans FAs are found in fat from dairy products and meat of ruminants, and have distinct effects compared with trans FAs industrially produced. The lipid composition of cheeses depends on the milk used. In this work was determined CLA and TVA content in milk fat of sheep and cow to be 1.4% and 3.2%, respectively, and from goat, 0.7% and 1.8%. Also, differences in CLA and TVA content were found in fat extracted from samples of the same cheese type made from cow's milk from the same company but with different production dates during a year. The levels of CLA and TVA found in Uruguayan cheeses were generally higher than levels reported in previous studies with comparable cheeses produced in other countries. Milk fat is well-known to confer specific properties to foods. This in turn will affect the rheology and sensory attributes as food. For this reason, it is of interest to determine the triglyceride (TAG) composition in milk-derived foods. Results show that there are characteristic differences in the TAG composition of the different cheeses. We found minimal differences between cheeses from goat and sheep but found distinct characteristics for TAGs from cow milk-derived cheese.展开更多

The present study was aimed to assess the conditions of milk production on 30 farms in the city of S~ Mateus, to the North of the state of Espirito Santo, Brazil. Data were obtained through questionnaires sent to producers according to the legislation of the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture. The questions included type of milking, hygiene practices and health status of milkers, mastitis control and source and others. Milking was manually done in all farms, and only 40,0% of milkers washed their hands and forearms before milking, and 13.0% used antiseptic solutions after washing. None of the farms performed the pre-dipping and post-dipping procedures. Control of mastitis was not performed in 94.0% of the farms and none of them performed the CMT test. A high degree of non-conformity was observed in the family farms. These data demonstrate the need for training farmers in good agricultural practices. This would contribute to achieving better quality milk, and ensure the sustainability of the segment in the Northern region of the state of Espirito Santo, Brazil.展开更多

In this work, a 2D particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to investigate the turbulent characteristic of fluid induced by a chain of bubbles rising in Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. The instantaneous flow field, turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and TKE dissipation rate were measured. The results demonstrated that the TKE profiles were almost symmetrical along the column center and showed higher values in the central region of the column. The TKE was enhanced with the increase of gas flow and decrease of liquid viscosity. The maximum TKE dissipation rate appeared on both sides of the bubble chain, and increased with the increase of gas flow rate or liquid viscosity. These results provide an understanding for gas-liquid mass transfer in non-Newtonian fluids.展开更多
